Was happy to notice today many of the women modeling the extended sizes on Madewell's site were wearing flats - not all of them, but many!

Thank you ALL your thoughts, to which I nodded along with wholeheartedly too.

Barbie feet cracks me up. Never heard of it. HAH.

Avamariah, petite items being modeled on 5ft 10 models is quite laughable :)

Vildy and Joy, RIGHT. The fashion industry shouldn't have to call out that they are doing plus sizes or showcasing models who are middle aged. It should just happen - and be "normal".

La Ped, there are many models with low volume feet wearing sandals that are too wide. Boots that gape at the ankle and knees....and the list goes on. I hear you.

Knitting Gene, Barbara Diane, Jenn, Windchime and Style Fan, thank you for your gracious comments.

IMPORTANT: I would like to clarify that in Nordstrom's case - "extended sizes" means BOTH ends of the size spectrum - not just plus. So they are adding size 0, 00 and XXS, and adding onto petites too. As someone is can be sized out of a size 0 or XS unless the fit is narrow - I'm very pleased.

Yay for more diverse models, who come in different ages, shapes and sizes. In Australia, the average women is an Australian size 14, which is a US size 10. However most models would be an Australian Size 6, US size 2 and significantly taller than the average woman.

Barbie feet is news to me, but undermines the point of using plus size models, such a shame the industry treats these girls this way.

I hadn't noticed the barbie feet, but I had noticed a lot of high heels on heavier models. My observation is that is is UNFLATTERING, as in my eye it gives an ice cream effect to the person's look that wouldn't be there with shoes that ground the outfit better. Very strange.

Great thread with lots of great observations! Looking at WIWs gives me lots more inspiration than browsing advertisements does these days. ;)

I will also add, tangentially, my own pet peeve. I've been noticing a lot of models wearing shoes that are obviously a very poor fit for them: too-big pumps with with a huge gap at the heel, or toes spilling over the edges of strappy sandals. I've seen it from large companies and small, and it makes me wonder if marketing budgets are shrinking and they're making do with fewer and fewer pieces? I find it very distracting and it makes me less likely to browse/buy. Modelling is not exactly pleasant to begin with, and spending a whole shoot in shoes that don't even fit sounds downright awful.

Thanks, Angie for being so inclusive. I have noticed the Barbie feet too. I am hoping that the retailers will put the clothes together and not separate so-called plus from regular (what is that?). I am glad to see extended sizes but most women are "extended sizes" in the US.
I agree with Carla. It is cool when fabbers wear it better.

I am also grateful to see NAS or other garments on real folks - and isn't it super cool when a fabber wears it better?!

Yes! I noticed the heels, and strappy sandals at that
I actually don’t get it at all. Women of all shapes and sizes look good when the clothes fit and look intentional. So much has to do with care of appearance, hair and complexion. I admire anyone who puts a concerted effort into looking put together. It takes time and energy, something I realize many women are in short supply of.
I honestly do not know why society is so intent on portraying thin and young. We are all one, or both at some point but we don’t stay young. Time marches on. Plus, it is simply not realistic. Healthy and content looks best.
Yay! For bigger size ranges. Your photos are fun to browse.

Vildy makes a good point. I feel the same way about the use of older models when it is being called out. Older women come in all sizes and do not all want or need the same styles. Thank you for helping our eyes adjust to differences. I will now be aware of Barbie feet.

I just finished watching a youtube video of Karen Britchick who featured her best friend from UK, who had come over to visit. Her friend Paula is plus size or, as she says, fat. One thing that I wouldn't have thought of, and maybe only true for some, Paula hates it when brands add larger size ranges and then scream out in the advertisement that it's created especially for plus size. Both women are black and they also both hate it when it's as though brands are calling out, Look here, Black girls, this is for you. They want not to be singled out and just marketed to in an inclusive way with everyone else by, for example, the size range is discovered to be extended or the cosmetic shades are extended, when you go look. Anyway, I hadn't ever given thought before to what it might feel like to have brands act like you have different desires than anyone else.

When I’m shopping online I always look at how clothes are styled in particular shoes. Most of my shoes are flat or have a slight heal.

Another good thing I have seen: Everlane is now using a variety of models. Previously, they only used extremely thin angular women with extremely broad shoulders and no hips.

I think I will try buying from them this fall season as it is much easier to picture myself in their clothes.

Jenn, I think the odd pose with sneakers is akin to 'Barbie feet' for swimsuit modelling. As soon as you go on tip toes, calves and quads get tight and show definition with vertical lines that are elongating and slimming. Additionally the hips tilt such that to keep your balance you throw your shoulders back and chest forward. This is what happens when you wear high heels as well.

(I learned this watching Top Model. Tyra Banks was always calling 'Barbie Feet, Barbie Feet!')

Cardiff girl and Jenn, you both hit the nail on the head. Wise ladies as always.

Hadn't noticed the tip toe pose - and will look out for it.

In re: extended sizes, I have started to see some stores using more realistically sized mannequins. Target has started doing this. And they are not relegated solely to the plus-size area of the stores; they are mixed in with the missy sizes.
