I have curly/wavy hair and have found that after washing my hair if I run it under cold water it greatly reduces the frizz. I read that with curly hair it's important to close the hair cuticle after washing with hot water by runnig it under cold water as the hot water opens the cuticle which makes it frizz more. I'm not sure of the validity of the statement but I've noticed enough of a difference between when I do it and when I don't do it, to believe that it works. I also believe that playing around with lots of different products is important because everyone's hair is different so what works for one perosn may not work for someone else.
I wash my hair everday and use herbal essence curl shampoo and conditioner (I had not heard about not using shampoo so might try not using it and see if it makes a difference) and a wella smoothing cream which I put on while my hair is wet and then I tie my hair up to dry. I never blow dry and can't leave my hair out to dry because it goes fluffy unless I use lots of products which I hate the feeling of. Once my hair is dry (takes between an hour and two hours) I untie it and put more of the wella product through and maybe a small amount of curl mousse if the curls need a bit of help. The only issue I have is that all this takes so much time.

foam Mousse is great for fine or thin hair because it adds body and volume...not so good for thick, or coarse or very tightly even kinky curled hair...:)

The best advice was given here by Maya sometime ago. She said that the secret is to style the hair with a lot of foam for curls, the brand is not importante, most important is the quantity you use!
For me that's enough because I have oily hair!

I have hair that's somewhere between wavy and curly, and I notice that I have to sacrifice and allow a little frizz if I want it to be curlier. I only shampoo once a week, I leave a tiny bit of conditioner in, and I use Carol's Daughters Lite Hair Milk. The Deva Curl diffuser (http://www.amazon.com/DevaConc.....B001H88JEI) works WAY better for me than the traditional kind. If I let my hair air dry, it goes a bit curlier, but if I blow it dry, it has a bit more volume.

I've tried deep conditioning with coconut oil, and my hair looked the best it ever has when I didn't quite rinse it all out, which makes me think there might be something in spraying a fine mist of it after I get out of the shower, but I haven't tried it yet.

Well , Jean...I have little to add here...umm..... I am for shampooing as often as needed. controlling curls is all about the right product for you.

When I wore a perm(and my clients as well) for about 20 yrs. I liked curls very defined...I would shampoo ...towel dry...pick and add hairspary...re pick and leave...never brush or comb...perfect curls everytime, my hair was mid back and layered:)

Patty... grey hair is often a completely different texture and density than your other hair:(

Might I toss in the question of grey/white hair mixed in with with this curly hair question now that good relevant info has been offered?? Tho I have fine, wavy with frizz I find that the grey is the bad guy here. Even with a dye job the grey is much more frrizzy and fussy than my head has ever been.

Thanks everyone!

Maya, I was due for a haircut while in London. I just got it cut and it is better. I am trying a silkening shampoo I got from the stylist and a conditioner, both without sulfates. I am with you- I do not think I could go without shampoo but I will try to wash every other day- do you wear a shower cap or get your hair wet if you shower daily?

Jean, my hair is also very fine. It grabs and holds on to whatever passes by. Washing every other day is fine, but any less than that doesn't cut it. I would definitely use a sulfate free shampoo though. It's a happy compromise. I think the no shampoo rule works best for very curly or coarse hair.

Looking at your London pictures, it seems like you have a lot of bulk in your hair that might be weighing down the curl. I am no hair expert, and I am still working out and experimenting how to best encourage my wavy hair, but I can definitely say this cut helped. I always thought my hair was flat and thin to begin with so when my stylist said she was cutting out the bulk, I was terrified of ending up with a limp, lifeless mop on my head. But really all it meant was raising the layers and cutting them so they separate naturally.

Ooh, yes, seconding Tarzy big time! A layered cut is essential, for me at least, to release the curl. I also can't wear it too long, or it will drag down and lose its curl, turning into a big, bushy mane instead (think hair bands from the 80s!). And since my hair is thick and coarse, a razor cut is really, really bad: It makes my hair all frizzy.

Good luck finding the right curly hair magic, Jean!

Jean - I also wanted to add that the right haircut can help release the curls. When my hair is too long and thick (not layered properly), it doesn't curl as well. I always need to have some bulk removed, and a little layering to free the curl. Of course, your hair may be totally different, but a good cut is really important for curly girls.

I always enjoy these curly hair discussions. It's lot of trail and error to find the products that work on your particular hair. And even when you think you've the the right products, my hair still just does whatever it wants to.

But technique is really the key, I think.

I do the same as most here - limited shampoo, generous conditioning, never never never brush (it separates the curl stream), gentle blotting (I bought the Curl Ease towel - it's silly, basically a very long tea towel, but it does the trick), and air drying. I recently switched to adding product when it's wet (thanks Cricket!) and that seems to work most of the time. Except when it doesn't. But that's the challenge of curly hair!

The no-shampooing approach definitely has a lot of fans. I know that S. on the Academic Chic blog became a convert this past year, and detailed her conversion on the blog. It does take a while for your scalp to adjust and stop producing oil (several weeks, from what I've heard).

I have naturally curly/wavy hair that is very coarse, thick, and plentiful. I do shampoo, but only every other day or even every third day. I use L'Oreal Vive shampoo, the one that says it makes your hair shiny. I use a leave-in conditioner (Potion 9 by Sebastian, which April mentions) every time I shampoo, and then a deep conditioner once a week (Aveda Damage Remedy). Once my hair is dry, I can't feel the leave-in conditioner in it (sometimes I do have to scrunch the curls in places, to soften the conditioner). I prefer hair that doesn't look like it has stuff in it, but that's just my preference.

I gently towel dry my hair, and always let it air dry (never, never blow it dry, even if it's below zero outside). I never use a comb or a brush on it, but "finger comb" it in the shower.

My SO also has curly hair. He has had luck with the infrequent-shampooing approach, along with Infusium leave-in conditioner. You will probably have to play around a bit to find the right products, but for me the key is to keep it hydrated, never blow it dry, and find the right leave-in conditioner. I've tried tons of different ones, but I always come back to the Potion 9.

One more thing, Jean -- gel (or at least, the DevaCare gel) will not make your hair hard and crunchy. I use two full pumps of it from a giant bottle -- a pretty hefty palmful of gel -- and when my hair dries, it is still soft and touchable.

Jean, the "curly girl" folks at Deva Chan say that most curly hair is actually not coarse but fine -- there's just a lot of it.

I know, the no-shampoo thing sounds weird at first. But I found that plain water with conditioner leaves my hair pretty clean. My color lasts a lot longer now, and my hair is much softer and less dry at the ends.

The idea that there are some silicones that rinse out makes sense. My Potion 9 has something silicone-based, but I have not noticed any buildup even without shampooing.

1. No shampoo! Use conditioner without silicones or sodium lauryth sulfates.

2. I apply my styling product at dripping wet (but my hair is very curly, not just wavy). Then, I "plop" it upside down, as I wrap it gently in a long-sleeved knit t-shirt. I leave it wrapped for 20-30 minutes. Or if its bedtime, I go to bed like this and sometime in the middle of the night, I unwrap.

3. I let it airdry. Cool breeze outdoors is best, but how often does that happen? And I hardly touch my hair. That makes frizz.

4. My current co(nditioner)-washing products: Dr. Bronner's Shikaikai Hair Conditioner (for washing) or Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner (for washing). I alternate and only use product for co-washing 1-2 times per week. The other days, I wet my hair to restyle but do not use conditioner.

5. Styling products: homemade flax seed gel or Dr. Bronner's Styling Creme.

(I just saw your question about fine vs. coarse hair. Mine is very fine and spiral curly.)

I shampoo a few times a month, the rest of the time I only use conditioner. The best product I've found for defined curls is spray gel. Pantene spray gel used to work really well for me, but they changed the formula. Now I use Redken or Tresemme in a pinch. Regular gel, curl cream or mousse doesn't give me defined curls for some reason, only soft waves. I think spray gel works because I don't really have to touch my hair. and disturb the curl After spraying the gel, I let it completely air dry or diffuse if I'm in a hurry.

I'm still working out the best method too, some days it turns out really well, some days not. I tend to have better curls in the summer and wavy hair in the winter.

I have super-curly hair too (and actually took some pictures recently to post here, I'm hoping to get around to it later today), and I'm also on the conditioner-washing only-no-shampooing bandwagon. I wash my hair with conditioner, then add in gel (either the Devacurl AnGel, or Kiss-my-face), "plop" with a towel for however long I have before I head out the door, and then let air dry the rest of the way. On non-wash days, I use either watered-down gel or hair oil to perk it up, and then pull it back into a half-up.

I think the issue with silicones is not that they're inherently bad, or that you can't wash them out, but that you need to use a relatively harsh shampoo (with sulfates) to get them out. Those sort of shampoos strip out the natural oils in your hair along with the silicones, though, and since curly hair is naturally much dryer than straight hair, that makes it go all hay-wire (literally!).

So, you avoid silicones not because they themselves are bad, but because they require you to use a type of shampoo that is bad for curly hair. That is why water-soluble silicones in products are totally fine -- they come out without sulfate shampoo. Does that make sense?

April, silicones do indeed build up if you choose not to shampoo. But they wash out if you do. However, silicones in detanglers and other lightweight products typically don't build up the way conditioning silicones do because they are more lightweight (or something along those lines).

They recommended the gentle shampoo and conditioner for me, although I believe this is just for marketing purposes. Meaning I don't think they recommended it for me because of my specific hair issues. It's just a new product and they wanted to promote it.

It's on the front page here: http://store.arrojoproduct.com/merchant.mvc

It's not silicone free but it is sulfate free.

I think that's right, Maya -- silicones aren't bad for your hair, they just accumulate (supposedly) if you're not shampooing them out.

Oh, this might seem like a no brainer, but certainly in my case, it was all about getting the right cut. I had my hair cut for the first time assuming a wavy style. It made such a huge difference.

I actually found another fab site: thebeautybrains.com. They are a group of cosmetic scientists who answer questions about beauty products in a scientific and clinical way. They either dispel or confirm common rumors and marketing gimmicks. They absolutely squashed the idea that silicones are bad for your hair, and various other rumors I have been hearing. That doesn't mean I'm on a rampage getting silicone based products, but I don't cringe in fear at them either.

I also think wavy hair is slightly different than truly curly hair. I need to touch my waves. They need encouragement and shaping, whereas curly hair just forms on its own.

Jean, I think that Ele and I are more or less on the same page about dealing with curls: no shampoo ("shampoo" your hair with conditioner only); use a cheap conditioner because they don't have any silicones, which will build up over time if you're not shampooing; blot your hair with a flat-weave fabric or even a good paper towel rather than rubbing it with a terry towel; never brush or comb; use a cocktail of products, but nothing with silicones.

Mousse will define your curls but will make your hair crunchy when it dries. I stopped using mousse when I started using this gel from Deva, and I use it in conjunction with a "wearable treatment" called Potion 9 by Sebastian.

So here's my routine:

1. "Shampoo" with cheap conditioner.

2. Rinse it out mostly, with cool-ish water, but leave the tiniest bit coating your hair. (I can hear straight-haired people shrieking in horror, but this has never left my hair limp or flat. Curly hair is different animal.)

3. Blot hair with flat-weave cloth. I use a flannel diaper from my teenager's infancy -- pretty threadbare.

4. Apply Potion 9 first, then gel. Let it dry more, then hit the roots only briefly with the hairdryer, pushing the roots upward to get some lift. Do not run fingers through curls or disturb them any more than necessary.

5. If it's a very humid day, I'll put a tiny bit of Potion 9 on top after drying, for added sheen.

Sounds complicated and you may not need all those steps, but it works for me.

Jean, my stylist gave me a lot of tips and advice yesterday. A lot of what she said mimics what is on naturallycurly.com

First she said to gently towel dry. Don't rub, just scrunch/squeeze gently. NC.com recommends using an old tshirt instead of a towel since it's gentler. I haven't tried that yet but I certainly could.

Then, let it air dry anywhere from halfway to 80% and add your product. I don't know what products you would use. It depends on your hair. But for me she used a generous pile of mousse (I have fine hair, you may not need that step), and curl cream. The mousse gives hold and volume, while the curl cream activates and holds the curl (or in my case wave), and eliminates frizz. She also added spray but I am not sure yet if I need it or not.

The downside is that you can definitely FEEL the product. I am not used to that. But it seems like curly/wavy hair requires it. The curl cream is pliable so throughout the day I can just massage the roots a little and lift the waves up a bit.

She told me not to wash OR condition every day. Wash every other day. On the days that I don't wash, she said to use the hair spray to reactivate the curl and re-form the waves.

Ele DOES have perfect curls doesn't she? Very impressive.

I'm sure you'll get all the help you need from the forum, Jean. But I love your curls as they are!

Did you see that I responded to your threads? Did it make sense?

Oh, the eternal quest for us curlies, finding curl with no frizz. The best thing I've found for my hair is being somewhere else - literally changing climates. When I am in Arizona every day is a good hair day. In Ohio, not so much. In terms of products I'm liking Curl Keeper. Have you checked the website http://www.naturallycurly.com?

I know this has been brought up as a topic before but I cannot find the post. After meeting with Ele and seeing how perfectly and lovely her curls separate- I am on a mission to get my hair to improve. It works some of the time but often if weather is humid I get the frizzy look which is when I resort to putting it back. I just purchased some new gel from my hairdresser which is working well. Do professional products really work better than drugstore?

When hair is dry , do you leave it alone for the day or add more gel? Hair spray for humidity?

Curly and wavy girls, Taylor, Reneta??
Ele, if you are out there??
Styling, shampooing, conditioning tips all would be appreciated.
