Sorry I'm late getting back to this. Thank you for all your comments!
I especially appreciate all of you with greying or white hair that chimed in. I need to draw on your collective dressing wisdom. Joy, It's interesting to me to learn that my hair will be in transition, constantly changing, for a long time. I'll have to scale back on the taupe in my wardrobe, because next year I may need to bookend with another color! Although I think I have a little time. DH is nine years older than me and I am greyer than he is. I try not to be perturbed when people assume we are around the same age!

Deborah, When I was shopping for these frames about a year and a half ago, I was straightening my hair and I had no layers. If I shop for a solid pair of frames, I think that will help matters immensely.

Peggy, I love how Angie uses her specs as a fabulous statement accessory. We learn so much from her example. Hopefully the media will catch up!

Donna, Black and white graphic prints are so good on salt and pepper hair, as are charcoal tweeds. No wonder you love them. My hair is a lighter brown, so I don't look as good in them.

Ruth, It's true I've used the print on a top to make a statement for a while now. I'm not sure how I'm going to do it going forward. Help me please? Like you I wear mostly neutrals. Color just seems off on me right now, but I keep trying it. My main concern is my yellow skin tone. So many colors really bring out the yellow, which I don't like. My doctor looked at my wrists and hands and said, "What are you eating?!" Lots of beta carotene, apparently!

Angie, I remember that post! It will be good for me to go through it again. I love the way you chalk so many things up to personal preference instead of saddling us with a bunch of rules. Have I thanked you for being you lately? I feel honored that you shared a bit of your personal style journey here. I loved that black, white and grey plaid shirt on you. It was a stunning way to bridge your white jeans and black jacket. The cognac booties and bag were the cherry on top!

Sharan, see, you got my two snakeskin items confused (and who could blame you). That's another reason to only have one. I was wearing my Theory snake print blouse with a charcoal sweater on top, but thank you so much for liking my look, hair twin! I'm thinking my DD's blush blouse is just a little to pale. Are you sure I can't get some more Rit dye and try to darken it? KIDDING.

Jen, high five on the way you're looking at the ageing process? Now I've got to go polish my "patina", lol!

Aida, I appreciate your insight on "avoiding sweetness". There are so many different variables at play, and sometimes I do think I veer off track in this way. I feel my curls are sweet enough on their own; no need to add sugar! Also I had my hair trimmed about an inch when I got home from SSIF, and now it has an 80's vibe that I am also trying to avoid. Your longer bob looks more modern, but I'm not sure I could go that long. I need to play with the length and shape some more. I'd love deets on how your stylist cuts the shape and layers of yours. :)

Jaime, they say hair is just an accessory, but IDK, it feels like a part of me. It is truly amazing how color and cut can change a look. I feel like I'm coming at it backwards as per Angie's advice, but it's because I couldn't make up my mind what I wanted it to look like. My poor hairdresser probably thinks I'm an unmedicated schizophrenic.

Kate, now that I see the purple cast of the black dye, it makes perfect sense that yellow (and more black dye) was missing from the mix. Can you believe I have "NO MORE RIT DYE" written in my style notebook? From about a year ago?

Lucy, Yes! One of the things I did do right was to grow my bangs out a little in anticipation of getting glasses (so I could wear my hair off my face). I already have a small face and I didn't want to be covering 50% of it up.

Denise, that's because I owe you that coffee! The booties are taupe actually, and it has been in the 90's so I haven't worn them after that initial cool snap we had. I'm back in my sandals for another few weeks I'm afraid.

Caroline, ah, you have the black formula! Not that I'll be trying it anytime soon. I love your gorgeous light hair! I've not been able to embrace textures yet, but that's something I'd like to explore.

Can relate to your dye story so much that I won't dye anything that I'm not prepared to wreck The recipe for a true deep black is 2 to 3 parts black dye to 1 part bright golden yellow dye. Ironical that I never had trouble dying clothes black - so not my best neutral :)

I have straight hair that has gone a soft shade of white (at the front at least, the back has more darker grey). Since I stopped colouring it I've had to completely rethink my wardrobe. I'm not much of a pattern person either - they have to be spot on before they work imo. So I prefer to use texture for interest rather than patterns.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts in this thread, and it has been really interesting to read.
I'm fascinated how much of a difference glasses make. I wear contacts most of the time, as they are more effective for my specific sight problem. But sometimes I do wear glasses, dark cobalt frames. I really notice I need to style my hair differently when I wear glasses, and I pull it back more often. There is just too much happening on my face otherwise! I also need to wear "rosy" makeup, otherwise I look a little pasty.
But I had not thought to change my clothes or colours or patterns! Wow. I need to start taking notice of this!
So thanks :)
And oooops, sorry about the dye....

I think your plans going forward sound wise, and I really agree that changing hair color and texture can impact all of what you wear (for many years, I had a perm).

Oh man, I'm laughing with you (not at you) on the dye. If it's any consolation, I read that black is one of the hardest colors to dye. To get a true black you actually have to combine all these dye packet colors you wouldn't expect with your 'black' packet, like yellow. I'm sure a light version is even less likely to cooperate, especially with RIT (which tends to be less true to what the label says for certain colors then some other dyes I think I read).

Claire you are a riot! Loved your dye story; loved your comments about your former LBD's. And I also relate to your confusion faced with a new hair color and style. I remember when I first chopped off all my hair and was absolutely taken aback by how much I did NOT like all my androgynous looks anymore. And once the old color was out I did NOT like brown on me anymore (I have inched back to some browns since then). Well you get the idea. You are the best minimal style blog out there and you don't even have a blog!

Another great read! Your musings are always interesting. I'd look at the items that have gone out (sweater, dress) as great opportunities to upgrade to something current. Like an oversized button-up shirt, or new-look sweater with an interesting swingy shape, that sort of thing. Also interesting thoughts on how wearing your hair curly (which I looooooved on you) is impacting the types of patterns you're after. I don't know that I necessarily avoid certain patterns because of my hair, although I do tend to avoid round patterns BUT that is more an issue of avoiding sweetness. Which in retrospect, could still be related to my hair and how curls tend to add sweetness! Plaids and lines are my favorite, which tend to really highlight the curls.

This is such a great post Claire. I have stopped wearing brighter colours because my hair has gotten so blonde. It is fading away. I don't wear many patterns. I find (with the exception of leopard and snakeskin -- they act like neutrals to me) solids more versatile. I wonder if my freckles have something to do with this.

I like the idea of wearing your own colours. That seems so natural.

I am loving the comments and reflections - all around Claire's great story telling! Texstyle, I wonder if others have experienced the same re the 'nude' glasses frames. I was a real celtic clear contrast colouring and now I let my hair go celtic white, I still find that I need the colour clarity and definition I always needed with dark hair and eyes that sound like yours Claire. Nude or clear frames just do nothing for me. I am also venturing to the eye colour frame to add the colour and contrast there especially as I am finding it is just becoming easier to wear specs all day.

Joy I am hearing and learning re the ongoing CHANGE in colour of hair. Claire this sounds like you reflecting on it just keeps happening. I am not sure if I use the word correctly but I remember an artist talking about ephemeral art one time and how the beauty of the artwork is in how it changes and 'decays' over time. I choose to use this as my main explanation of life - and fashion and my look - that the beauty is IN the changing. So constant reflexivity required! Oops, I think that also means constant reflection and new clothes and pretty things to work with the change :-S

Hi, Claire! I completely understand the curly gray hair dilemma....it took me a while to figure out why prints did nothing for me. When my hair was dark, I wore it straight and prints looked ok on me...but now I only wear solids and maybe some stripes or plaids. And black looks good on me, I don't need white near my face. If I need something a little brighter near my face, I have short chunky pearls in white, gray, snd multi.

Claire, I'm fascinated by your analysis and find it enlightening, too. I laughed out loud at the dyeing saga--you are such a great storyteller! (I had to reassure my DH I wasn't laughing at him.) I agree with Deb that you had an intellectual cool look when I saw you in person, and with your taupe trench and shoes, plus snakeskin sweater (is that the one that just got purged?), your neutrals looked completely in concert with your natural beauty. Not boring, not washing out, but harmonious. I think you have a great eye for what flatters you. I like your hair curly--and you have to understand I'm biased, right?

I'm sending someone to your house now to confiscate your Rit. I hope you understand. It's for your own good.

Great analysis. I love how you're paying attention to how you FEEL in your wardrobe items, and how they react to our hair and complexion. It's very important, and at the heart of the happiness-factor.

Claire, your garment dying stories are hilarious - I'm not laughing at your expense - just enjoy reading the adventures. Sorry about the grotty outcome. Onto to the next SOLID dress that isn't too dark.

You might find this post about curly hair and self imposed style restrictions interesting. There are no guidelines - merely personal preferences. And your preferences at the moment are to calm and lighten in order to neutralize statement curls and specs. Makes sense.

http://youlookfab.com/2011/12/.....trictions/

Straighter clothing looks great on straighter figures, so by all means embrace your natural shape.

(All my outfits have to work with specs because of a minor complication - I need to see. Thanks for the sweet words, Peggy).

Relatively speaking, I am lightening and simplifying sooooo much. Have been doing so for 4 years, and things are on the same trajectory. I don't ever want to purchase solid grey for my style again. It has to be patterned or textured, and preferably on the bottom. Although I love black, I am very cautious about the amount that I bring into my wardrobe, and it's in very small doses. Actually, I wear black to wear with white. I find ink blue a lot kinder to me in larger wardrobe doses.

balance is a tricky thing. change one element like more gray or more texture in your hair and the carefully curated outfits feel ever so tinily off. just enough to be unsettling. with no slack in your 10 items, frankly i don't know how you get dressed especially after purging a few more items.

i'm trying to reconcile moving away from prints with a post you made on Suz' thread on essentials vs statements. prints are the easiest way to make statements. what are you thoughts about what pieces would give you that statement without the print?

i felt deja vue on this thread. i've toyed around with the idea of more color (analogous to your prints) and i have a really hard time integrating them in my wardrobe. may be i'm insufficiently imaginative or too lazy to really give them a try. my preference is for monochromatic looks and colors, even in the same family, seem too much and a bit disjointed unless they really match. so i'm back to black, which is where i started, but now "black" is too harsh and i have to think about charcoal. not a problem, until i have to match shades and tones of charcoal!

Claire, I LOVE reading your musings. In the past 2.5 years, I have gone from dyed black hair to charcoal tweedy hair with a lot of salt in front, and from short hair to ear covering longer hair and a few weeks ago back to much shorter hair. Thus, a lot of what you wrote rang true, and as I look at my most recent purchases I wonder if they will work for me as my hair grows grayer.

My dual colored hair + glasses feels like ALGO. Add to that a desire to wear earrings now that my ears are again exposed, and it is easy to go OTT, so I hear you on the patterns.

Do more graphic patterns make you feel any differently? I feel drawn to black & white stripes and polka dots as never before, but maybe that's due to my hair colors? Also, tweedy charcoal textures which is a new one for me.

Have you noticed that Eileen Fisher has a lot of solids and textures but not much in the way of prints?

Claire, I totally commiserate with your dilemmas, I'm just many years further along on the spectrum.

One of my favorite things about Angie is that she totally embraces her specs.
She's wearing them in every photo she shows us. I have a complaint about photos we are shown of beautiful aging women who are almost never wearing eye glasses. (And I'm certainly NOT putting Angie in that category. More thinking of Judi Dench, Lauren Hutton, etc.). I have a brand new pair of metal magenta specs. They change color as the light hits them. Supposedly they make my eyes look bluer. The technician tactfully asked if I"d considered wearing more eye makeup, so maybe that's a partial solution.

I wish I had a solution to your (and my) lack of contrast issue. And I can't blindly rely on the colors that always worked in the past when my hair was

Lead us to the answers, Claire!

Claire, I can empathize with the difference your hair color and texture makes in the way your wardrobe works. The news is that it will continue to change. My hair keeps getting whiter. Five years ago it was a taupe- grey. Remember that there are different shades of black (and white). I went back and forth between pure white and ivory for years before now preferring a soft white or slightly greyed version without the yellow of ivory or cream. Optic white is a bright, and that can be a good thing away from the face.
Your goals are wonderful. I could use the same ones and find "straight" really difficult right now with all the draping and jersey. I'll be following your journey with great interest .

I'm sorry that the dyeing didn't work out as you hoped, Claire. When I started getting my hair highlighted I found that black wasn't a great a color on me as it used to be, and black and white prints only work when they're less dark overall. I used to wear a lot more prints and for the last couple years I've been drawn to more solids. I probably should cater to my hair texture and wearing glasses most of the time more than I do, actually.

With your hair and glasses it may be that patterns are now a little too much my going on for you? I have only a few patterned items left in my wardrobe and they are jackets which I usually wear over a column of black as statement pieces and are generally office pieces.

Amy, no you're not the only one! At least your hair is still dark. But I know exactly what you mean when you say you were not prepared for how much wearing glasses changes your overall look. I thought they would just be a simple addition, not the game-changer that they were. Then, I wasn't sure they were even right for me after a while, but like you, I was stuck with them and found myself having to find things that made them work. The frames weren't expensive; my insurance covered them. It was the lenses that cost an arm and a leg, and now my prescription has changed, so I get another shot. But this time I feel more pressure to get the frames right, or at least figure out what wasn't working for me the last time.

Suz, I just call 'em as I see 'em! I love your burgundy frames. I used to think I'd never want to commit to a color for specs, but now that my wardrobe is mostly neutral, I could see it working. And I could always wear my old specs for a day if I wanted to. I actually tried on some blue frames. I like the idea, since I have blue eyes and I wear them with everything already! But it is tricky. My eyes are blue-grey with some amber which lends them a teal cast. The blue on the frames was more saturated and straight forward, and made my eyes (literally) pale in comparison. The dark red would be closer to the color opposite of my eyes and might brighten them by serving as a complement. The red was a good match for my inner lip red, they blended anyway. Hopefully we will figure out this contrast thing. If we slide the darker end a little lighter towards the middle and contrast it with a light, perhaps that will do the trick. My eyebrows are quite dark, but they're not black. If I wear my very dark charcoal sweater, people often refer to it as "black", maybe because it looks like black on me-- like it's "my" black. If you put it next to something black though, you can tell that it's just a little lighter and softer.

texstyle, I was thinking of that button front printed shirt you got that was a cotton silk blend. Have I got it right? Anyhow, I addressed the issue of eye-colored glasses above. Good thoughts. I love your new warm grey VC bag. That's a great light neutral. I'm not sure I can pull off black in a top still, though my dark glasses help.

Alasse, Thanks for the vote of confidence m'dear! I will try to oblige you with some WIW's. I fear they will be a bit dull, but I realize for people to comment, they need to at least see a baseline of my style.

Jen, connectiveness in fashion, esp. in relation to your body colors sounds like a really good plan. I just read that matching your eyeglass color to your eye color can be really effective to bring the attention to your eyes. I think this is pretty true. I have a pair of olive green reading glasses that I like much more than most other colors I've tried. Also, when you do this, the color of the eyeglasses won't compete so much with your other outfit colors because you already have your eye color as a permanent part of your color scheme. I wonder how "nude" or "blush" eyeglasses would look - something that nearly matches or echos our skin tone. I haven't tried that myself.

Claire, that printed loft tee has earned a high CPW for sure. Regarding black, I used to depend on black for it's usefulness too, esp. for shoes/handbags, belts - but I'm leaning more towards warm gray, taupe and pewter shades now for handbags, shoes and belts. This matches my hair colors better and since it's still neutral, it works fine with black outfit items as well. Learned that here on YLF and it's really helped me. Not to mention the whole "lightening up" thing. I still love some deep tones and still feel good in them but I'm also really liking ivory (for me it's better than pure white).

Claire, thank you (and you are way too flattering, by the way.) I completely agree that going too close to one's natural contrast levels or colouring seems to be a recipe for "wash out." At least it is to me. Somewhere, surely, we'll find a sweet spot where there is enough but not too much contrast for more dramatic looks, and enough but not too much harmony so we can remain visible, LOL.

I think maroon or burgundy frames could be lovely on you. Mine are sort of burgundy with hot pink inside for an overall dark fuchsia effect. And I also have my black ones, which some people found too strong, but which do work with higher contrast or darker outfits to unify things.

Blue frames might be another option. I tried some I loved but they were pricey and it is not time for me to get new specs.

I am now off to read those blog comments and see if I can make sense of them, too!

I also recently did the David Zyla colour matching thing so poor hubs has been matching paint samples to pinched finger tips and iris colours. Anyhow, have been getting lots of compliments when I have managed to jag THE right coloured tshirt lol.

Gosh Jen, I think I've read that book (the ancient version, lol)! I'll have to check out the new version. I know Lisa Pippus talks a lot about matching your "inherent" colors, contrast and lines, as well as Imogen and some of the PCA gurus. Angie has also written on matching your body colors. I think all of this has to do with connectivity. Imogen even has a video about finding your inherent "sheen" and matching that. My glasses are shiny, and after watching that video, it made me want to go matte on my next pair. There are so many things to consider! I find it all fascinating.
