Fun to see my answer from last year! My hair color has definitely softened my colors, but it is a constant evolution. I agree with myself that grey hair makes me braver about trying trends!

Well, I have an answer from the other camp. I had been losing the red from my hair. Instead of thinking I was a redhead, people thought I was blond. They thought I colored my hair a frosted blond. I would insist, "It's gray" and they would smile indulgently at me. I'm fairly pale skinned. I found I was wearing a lot more vivid cool colors. I still wore a lot of black. People would say things like, "That's your color. It brings out all your own coloring."

So I experimented a bit with dressing like a blond. I like pattern mixing and I like a certain boldness to my clothing. I had to strive like anything to avoid looking headless and I'm a person who wants the focus on my face. My face and hair were blurring together too much. I couldn't see the bones, contours of my face. I couldn't stand it anymore (I'm 65) and even my son said, "Mom, dye your hair." (He's a redhead, too)

I had been struggling with this blondness for so long that I thought I might go honey colored. But left it up to the colorist to suggest something. I wore very contrasty pattern mixed clothing and talked to her about what I needed. I needed my hair to stand up to my outfit and trump it. She immediately said, "Red." And I thought, Red? Imagine my surprise when I went back through old pictures and there was my red hair. I had put it out of my mind and was dealing with it as it now was. When she finished the first part of the process and I went toward the chair with my wet now darker hair I felt tremendous relief - I could clearly distinguish my face from my hair. I felt like myself again. She showed me, when she dried it and styled it, how all the color was coming back into my face. I told her that I had deliberately left off any foundation (which I rarely wear anyway) and blusher so she could see my skin tone better. She pointed at my face and said, "You don't need blusher now. Look." And I haven't been wearing it much since.

I found that I felt like I had a new wardrobe in the sense that I had been unconsciously buying clothes for a redhead for years and now it really worked.
I got rid of a few pastel things that were now too jarringly sweet. So my reaction to no longer being gray is exactly the reaction I often read on the part of women who do decide to go gray: I feel incredibly fierce.

I stopped coloring my hair two years ago as well as grew out my hair slightly. My hair went from brownish natural black to a tweedy charcoal. I used semi-permanent rather than permanent dye for the last two colorings to ease the transition.

I find that I really like tops and toppers that combine black and white or black and cream; they seem to work better (bookend?) better than a solid color. I am moving toward silver, pewter, and charcoal footwear, and charcoal gray clothing in general. Medium gray does not seem to work as well.

My grown hair is still objectively short, but it obscures my ears and any earrings. Moreover, since my hair is more than one color now, I find it very busy, especially since I wear glasses. I did not anticipate this and don't know that going shorter will remove appreciable busy-ness. I'm not sure that I will ever have monochrome hair; if so I am years away.

Finally, I feel like I need to wear more intense lip color now to bring my face in focus. My natural lip color has faded and many colors turn orange on me, so the search for holy grail colors is proving to be challenging.

Mo, I know what you mean about the eyebrows. I think I have more grey in my brows than on my head. AND, they are the coarse long hair so I have to brush them up and trim.

This is a great topic. I'm somewhere in the middle of the process--11 months now since I last had overall color and I still don't know what color my hair really is. I do find I'm wearing more gray-toned items, but many brown-toned things still look good. I'm having highlights and lowlights, and more and more gray-lights are showing up on their own.

As far as my style changing--well, my body shape has been changing as well, not to mention that I just keep getting older. When I think about it and make wardrobe plans, I tend to think Modern Classic or Classic with a Twist. When I'm shopping, however, I fall in love with things I'd never imagined I buy. And I love wearing them.

The truth is that I'm in an experimental stage. There are so many great ageless styles around now and it seems a shame not to try new things.

I'm 30 and have a growing number of gray hairs. I plan to avoid coloring it (forever, if possible) because it seems hard to stop after you've done it. Plus, I'd require a dramatic shift in dedication to upkeep, which I'm definitely not ready for.
Thanks to all of your for your considered replies. Even though this doesn't apply to me quite yet, I've enjoyed reading the responses.

Hmmm, I played with highlighting my hair half a dozen times in the last decade, but have left it alone since turning 40. I have stray grays but pull them. What I find more interesting about this conversation is the comment on skin tone. I find more difference between when living in FL vs Tahoe, than what age I am. Maybe I'm confused. I will say that no one warned me about gray eyebrows lol!

Great thread! I am still working out how going grey has affected my style. Since I cut my hair very short at the same time it is sort of hard to know which changes are from the color and which from the (lack of) length. I have been told I look younger enough times to believe there is something to that and I do believe my cool white, black and silver grey hair is more suitable to my olive skin than the warm reddish brunette that I had before. I am definitely more drawn to white and silver and certain mid-browns look all wrong. Blue has always been a good color for me but some more intense teals look less good I think. Pink is suddenly on the table also. It is a fun process figuring it out!

ETA - if anything I feel better about wearing "young" styles because my hair belies the notion I am trying to look like a teenager.

I have always had high contrast colouring, and I sort of expected I would need to switch to more muted tones as the skunk streak that began in my 20's slowly took over my head. To my surprise, I still need high contrast. The black and white, red and navy that have been the core of my wardrobe, continue to be my best colours. In fact I have a much harder time now getting away with muted tones like grey or steel blue--they seem to make my head look grey, whereas my usual colours make it look dark with (lots of) frosting. I have now started wearing nude or taupe shoes with no lighter tone on top because it seems to bookend my hair just fine, so there's that.

I needed glasses from my mid-40's, and started out with thick black-framed nerd glasses, because that felt like me. Now, I can't get away from them (well, the ones I'm wearing today are burgundy), because they seem to provide the contrast that my hairline and eyebrows used to (I don't know what happened to my eyebrows, they didn't grey or fall out, but they are much less noticeable).

Eye makeup (even mascara) just doesn't happen. 1. I can't see to put it on without making a mess (and youngest daughter has left home) and 2. when I try, my eyes water forever. But I take heart from one of my style icons (haha can't recall her name but she's a New Yorker with silver hair and she's on my Pinterest board) who wears red lipstick and says her glasses are her eye makeup. Lipstick: I have always needed a quite dark lipstick as my "nude", or I looked like a palomino. Now my lips are so pale that there is a terrible contrast between the days I remember to put it on and those I don't. I have a harder time pulling off the really dark ones, and my search for a more midtoned nude for "summer" over the past few years has turned up a series of almosts. but I have found that by putting it on over Vaseline Lip Therapy (part of my morning routine, which has expanded horrifically in recent years) it looks more natural.

My biggest wardrobe obstacle has been hats. I love hats, wide-brimmed hats, they were always part of my signature (though sometimes needed a little squeezing to fit my actual lifestyle). But now, the glasses are one challenge, but the swath of white hair above my ears (men greying at the temples looks distinguished, but it seems to be the worst place on me) just sticks out like a sore thumb especially with a black fedora. I did find one hat that didn't have that effect--when I wasn't in the market for a hat--it was at Payless Shoes of all places, was woven straw with a very wide brim, and in alternating bands of taupe and steel grey. It looked great on, but just the fact that those dull colours equalled my hair was too depressing to consider it.

My new hat replacement for a signature, by the way, is scarves. This also takes care of the other problem that snuck up on me. I never used to understand what Nora Ephron meant when she said "I feel bad about my neck". Going grey isn't the last of the surprises in store.

I am 35 and I colour my hair regularly, mostly because I enjoy playing with colour. I have however noticed with my regrowth that it is becoming more and more grey. I don't feel ready to commit to grey yet, especially since I don't think my skin is reflecting the age much yet (thank you oily skin) but I have been thinking recently that at some point I will embrace my grey and just stop with the colouring so this has been an interesting conversation!

hi brenda. my answer is yes but also still experimenting. i am surprised that cool clear colours as a principle woek, as does black as a basic. i thought i would go to tans and beiges but i think white silver and greys are much better. clear reds and blues have been ousted by magenta, and aqua greens and some blues. yes i toned down lipstick shades. i read early in my transitioning to keep brows and lashes deep. interestingly i had been dying my brows and lashes to keep up with dying my hair my 'natural' colour... ha! a tiny bit of blonde powder in my brows and a light blue or expresso eyeliner keep the definition. and i have been able to ditch the buckets of concealer i had been using... another revelation. best of all is travelling ... 2 mths without a hair appointment vs the 2 weeks max before. like shannon, i invest in the purple shampoos to keep my hair sparkling and daily leave in conditioner to keep it soft. i look at my husband and he looks great in light taupes, eau de nil, greys, some navies so i am on the look for those colour combos...part of the fun!! please excuse the ghastly spelling on my tablet...

This is a fascinating thread, thanks for starting it, Brenda. I have a little gray mixed in with my brown hair, and here and there some silver sprinkles. After reading these great comments I now notice how I have subtly changed my colors over the years - used to wear more black, now not as flattering. I had to buy a black shirt for a "black only" wedding that is coming up, and luckily I found something sheer, so it's not unremitting BLACK, and with a wide neckline so it's not all up in my face.

Cool ladies, thanks for your input.

I am going gray and currently at around 50%. I feel like its too soon to stop coloring but I do plan to stop when I get closer to 100% gray. I'm noticing that my grays are very bright. My daughter says they glitter. I plan to work with these bright tones when I do let the coloring go!

When my mum went gray, hers were warmer in tone. When she went gray she decided that she could wear more blacks but I felt that was a mistake since she still had a lot of warm tones in her skin, hair and eyes. So skin tone plays a part in what changes you need to make as well.

I think as we age, our skin tone changes as well. I'm finding that now my skin is not as fair with slightly warmer undertones. It's losing that rosey glow I used to have. Also I'm losing color in my lips so I wear lip color every day. I'm also finding I need to wear some blush as well. So I adjusted my make-up colors a few months back and it works well. I plan to keep coloring my hair for the foreseeable future but I'm looking forward to when the upkeep of coloring is behind me.

My hair is NOT gray. No way. It has....sprinkles!

Seriously, I think I still read as a brunette, so I still wear more medium to deep colors than pastels, but the silvery sprinkles on brown have shifted color palette to cooler range & more silver, pewter or bronze jewelry rather than yellow gold, & more mid-tone color,s since closer up it reads as a lighter brown, probably--as Firecracker said. And it's hard to distinguish how much is due to hair alone vs. the whole middle-aged package, which seems to prefer more mid-tones, and benefits from "best" colors and lighting up.

It absolutely changed my style when I stopped colouring my hair. I had been colouring it a mix of dark auburn and chocolate brown which looked great when I wore chocolate brown, gold, even beige against my face. Once I let the grey come in, those colours now looked hideous on me and completely washed me out. I also felt that my skin colour looked different against the new hair colour.

Grey, purple, red, navy and cobalt became my most flattering colours and I have also completely embraced white.

Like Joy, I had to change my makeup colours but in my case, I had to go a little brighter, otherwise I look much too pale. Instead of a darker rose blush, I wear a lighter pink blush, no eyeshadow, always mascara and a brighter lipstick - either red or pink (but not Barbie doll pink - lol!).

I haven't found going grey to be aging at all and in fact, think my face looks younger with my natural hair colour. A darker hair colour like I was wearing actually made my skin look a little older, like I was trying too hard.

I do use a shampoo & conditioner specifically for grey hair to keep it shiny and silver looking, not dull grey. And a current hair style helps to keep the grey from looking old IMO.

Brenda - it's a big step to stop colouring. I started going grey at 23 and coloured my hair for 23 years but I was so sick of the expense and time commitment of colouring every 4-6 weeks that it was just time to let it go. For me, it was the smartest decision I made and was completely liberating.

Lantana, thanks for the cheering on. :) I appreciate your comments.

Eliza, it is a bit daunting. Part of my reasoning for letting my gray grow out now at 40 is that it's only going to get harder for me. At least right now I'm still salt and pepper. If I wait too long, I'll be all white and it's so hard to transition from dark brown to bright white. I kinda wish I hadn't colored as well.

I appreciate this thread and will read through the responses carefully. At some point, my hair coloring will cease and I will go from a medium brown to a very white "gray". It is helpful to hear what others are finding. Thanks for sharing.

As always, i am sure skin tone plays into what will work best for people, but the silvery hair makes a strong contribution to finding best colors. So many good options and it could be good to have new palettes to play with. That said, I think getting from here to there is daunting. The in-between would challenge me and sometimes I wish I had never started coloring my hair, which had a lot of white in it before I was 40.

While hair colour changes so too does skin tone; both make a difference to the colours that suit us. Even people who colour their hair need to respond to the skin's changes. I'm 90% on Team Natural, believing greying hair generally looks better with ageing skin.
I went grey early (28) so for many years had "old" hair with young skin. The colours I could wear during that period were different from later on, when my skin was older.
Now my hair is more white than grey and I have had to alter my colour palette accordingly. And because white is a "bright" and my hair is really thick I have to keep it short, otherwise it is overwhelming. Not to mention hot and bothersome.
As for age appropriate clothes, well, age is not much of an issue for me stylistically. I like to wear clothes that are me-appropriate.
The choice you have made in relation to your hair is a big decision; I applaud it and support you.

Colours changed dramatically for me - black makes me look tired & older unless I wear more make up (not a good idea as my skin starts to age). This forced a change with some more avant garde styles of clothing because they basically only come in black I keep them for night now when the lighting is softer.

I also had a wardrobe full of coats, belts, bags & shoes in warm brown tones because they looked great with my hair & I love brown & black (very Italian imo) but now they just don't feel right & I'm slowly replacing them with whites, taupes, greys & silver.

Although my hair was a "warm" brown my skin & eyes are fairly neutral so I've kept to similar tones in make up.

I want to add that I love my hair colour & wouldn't change back for anything.

Thanks, Joy. :) I appreciate the input very much. I'll probably go through a closet clean out and post a lot of keep/pass on posts once my hair is done transitioning.

Thanks for the bump, Suz.

Lyn, I feel your... pain isn't the right word, but I totally understand. It's a big decision!

Adelfa, that sounds like an awesome outfit.

A fun thing... I visited my local Sephora recently and got a bit of makeup help. The woman who helped me was very supportive of my going gray and said more and more women are making that decision. I know she's probably paid to say that but it was still nice to hear.

Great question!
My hair used to be a very dark brunette, cool toned rather than reddish. As my hair turns more gray, I have found I like different colors on me--especially in the realm of neutrals. Black used to be my key neutral, and charcoal gray was always a good neutral for me. I don't like black so well on me, although I still love charcoal, and now I've added taupes that play well with my brown and gray hair tones. I used to like medium heather gray but now avoid it, as it brings out the real gray in my hair, rather than the mix of colors, and I feel it adds years if not decades (LOL) to my age. Similarly, I had a pair of gray eyeglass frames that I loved when my hair was just beginning to turn gray, but now they make me look old, old, old!--even though the frames would still be in style, I can't/won't put new lenses in them.
Curiously enough, I still wear steely gray tones (not heather), because they bring out the blue-gray in my eyes. And charcoal is still one of my best neutrals. I've also added espresso browns.
I wear more muted colors than jewel tones, although I think that has long been the case for me, even though the jewel tones were "my" colors. I wear lighter lipstick--kind of medium shades, and lately corals that I would not have worn in previous years--though occasionally I still do a darker color for a change. I still have enough brunette in my hair, and my eyebrows are still dark enough, that I guess I can still wear a lot of my old colors, even as I'm enjoying the newer-for-me taupes and not-quite-blacks. I find I'm really liking muted pewter-toned leather belts and shoes, and maybe the reason is that they coordinate with my hair! I hadn't thought about in quite that way before.

Brenda, that's a good question. I have not felt too old for styles because my hair is grey, but it has changed the colors that look best on me. My color before grey was a dark auburn. At that time I really could not wear black. With the silvery taupe hair, I look much better in black, chocolate brown and greys than I used to. I've also moved from jewel tones to midtones. For example, I used to wear lots of burgundy, rust, hunter green, royal purple and teal. Those colors do nothing for me now. Tomato red is now my best red, and midtone orange, greens, purples and aqua are more flattering. I used to wear only gold metal. Now I like silver tones equally as much.
Lighter shoes are another definite change to bookend the hair. It works.
I've also changed makeup colors to a slightly darker beige with no pink in it, coral rather than pink lipstick, and "dark blonde" eyebrow pencil rather than dark brown or black. I no longer wear eye shadow much and seldom wear mascara. It just seeems too unnatural. I never wear anything that makes my lips look shiny, like a gloss. That stopped in my 50's.
I do not use nail polish on my fingernails, but do like them buffed to a shine.
My toenails get painted pearlized white or optic white in the summer. I used to do peach or nude. Before that bright red or hot pink. When I was younger there were not so many choices of color available.
Styles of glasses have changed, but I would not say that I needed a different style or color.
Please ask about anything else that I may not have thought of.

I color so not whom you're asking. But I would think it would change your makeup and clothing colors. Look at Joy--I bet she didn't rock the silver and blush quite so well before she grayed. I don't think your palette would totally change but you would gradually find yourself gravitating towards some colors and away from others.

As for the youth of your style--never! Today I was told I looked like a teenager. I am 52 and I was wearing:

Cobalt straight leg jeans
Tee striped in black, mint, and periwinkle
Denim jacket
Black canvas martial arts sneaks

I think this outfit was totally age appropriate and would also be on someone 80.

As I watch my hair change color from month to month as my dyed brown locks grow out, I'm wondering how I will like the final result. And I'm wondering what else it might change about my style... will I like light colored shoes more since that will bookend things better than dark ones? I just don't know.

So I'm asking you.... what did gray hair change about YOUR style? Did you need different glasses? Did formerly age-appropriate clothes seem too young all of a sudden (hope not)? Did you change the colors you wore? Or make up colors?
