I think so. Sizes vary so much by store and designer that it's bound to happen. I think I'm closer to a pear shape with broad shoulders, and I tend to wear the same size tops and bottoms. Finding dresses that fit is a challenge, though.

I am a rectangle with IT tendencies. My shoulder measurement is the widest of my body. I usually wear a larger sized bottom than top, depending on the cut and style, the opposite of most ITs. My shoulders are wide but bust is small.

Because of my thighs, I consider myself a pear or maybe a pear with hourglass tendencies. I wear the same size top and bottom, and sometimes a smaller size on the bottom if it is an eased skirt that sits at the waist. Some women have more pronounced tendencies than others.

Thanks everyone for all the answers. You truly learn something new everyday. @Liz, well I just made a note yesterday that I wore the same size on top and bottom. and I would think being an inverted triangle me top size should be bigger.
For example in Ann Taylor clothing I wear XS on top and bottom or 2P top and bottom.
I also shop at Banana Republic same thing XS top and bottom or 2P top and bottom. I also for for dresses I wear 2P or XS
I don't know, looking through my closet I observed no matter the brand if I have a top and bottom for it I wear the same size. So I was just curious as to what that could mean?

I agree with the others. Not only because of the 3-dimensional nature of bodies, which makes for interesting body shape vs. measurement comparisons, but also because sizing is so non-standard and imprecise, even within one designer's offerings. I am a slightly pear-ish hourglass but I have a size 10 jacket and some size 6 skirts.

Yes, of course. There is no such thing as standardized sizing from one clothing line to the next (and sometimes even within clothing lines).

What is it that has you curious -- is the similarity in sizing making you question your body type? Are you wondering if you're buying properly sized clothing?

Yeah, it really does depend on cut, sizing, and overall body mass. As an overweight middle aged woman my size discrepancy is pretty standard: I take mediums on bottom and larges on top. But as an underweight IT in my youth I sometimes wore smalls on both top & bottom. When it really showed was at suit fittings: I was a 2 or 4 on bottom but never smaller than a 6 in a tailored jacket because of the width of my shoulders.

Of course. Sizing depends on the shape and cut of the garment, as well as the manufacturer and brand. Generally, I go for a size smaller on my bottoms, but just recently bought a gorgeous skirt from an Italian designer line that was TWO sizes larger than the size I normally wear on top. The hip measurement of the skirt has more or less the same circumference as my other skirts.

Quick question,
Is it possible for an inverted triangle wear the same size in tops and bottoms?
