If you put anything out on social media it could go viral. So nothing is safe unless you keep it to yourself. Now the backlash can be strong and sever. It is disappointing that people are internet warriors and judges from behind the screen. often spewing hate and judgement with anger that they feel comfortable with leaving comments on a post or some such thing.

It is wrong to attack with this type of hate. People like a mob mentality and that is what the internet and social media are in part. I think an opinion and education can be expressed without tearing one down. I also think that we excuse cultural appropriation way to easily and give it an excuse of "Oh He is on 17" or "Oh she was ignorant to this fact"

To Be honest you don't know it is cultural appropriation because it is not happening to you or you are really not educated to what the deeper meaning is behind the appropriation part. You ask 100 people you may get 100 differing opinions. I would rather err on the side of not touching that. America has a deep history of Cultural appropriation and dismissing and giving just as harsh criticism to those who do not look like what they perceive to be Americans.

I realize that this might be a Luddite reaction, but this is part of the reason that teens should not be posting on social media - especially without privacy settings. It doesn't say which platform she posted on, but I guess I am shocked that her mum allowed her to post photos that would be visible to anyone and everyone. I do not allow it for my teens, although they do participate in restricted chats groups with friends. And they know better than to post photos of themselves online.

While I take no issue with the dress, I do find the women using the classic welcome pose and the men making chopsticks with their hands to be somewhat questionable...

efbgen - I've often thought the same thing.

texstyle - She surely did. I know this is an unpleasant time for her, but no doubt a growing time as well.

CocoLion - I'm embarrassed to admit I had to look up "alt-right" because I wasn't even quite sure I knew exactly what the term referred to. But yes, I do think incidents like this can lead to reactionary responses.

cindysmith - We're very blessed to be part of this positive place Angie has built!

Sal - These media storms seem to obscure the real news that needs real responses.

I agree with La Ped - let's focus on the really important but harder targets. Recently in the UK a small children's clothing firm had its slogan and designs used by one of the large retailers - a slogan based on her son's illness.

We here too have these media storms and beat ups out of proportion to the action. The media then report on twitter and instagram feeds as though they were real news.

When I saw that article the first thing I thought was what happened to the comment- Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?
I often made and wore outfits with Chinese and Indian flair because I thought they were beautiful not because of cultural appropriation.
Sad it has come to this. It bothers me that people just want to sow discord.

I saw that, and directly tweeted the girl my support as a person of Asian descent. People are ridiculous. I don’t think I even have to rationalise my support. It was her prom for goodness sake! It wasn’t like she wore the dress for Halloween (and if she did, I’d still be ok with that). She looked beautiful!

Cardiff girl, the anonymity of the internet does make it easier to say things that a person might not be willing to say in person. Good old-fashioned polite behavior (in person and online) is increasingly rare.

bj1111, I find that interesting. As an American, I don't consider it cultural appropriation when I observe people of other cultures wearing suits, blue jeans, t-shirts, or sneakers.

La Pedestrienne, your comments are spot-on. Targeting marginally important issues can make us feel complacent rather than dealing with the truly harmful ones.

torontogirl, the civility and grace with which all manner of potentially sensitive issues have been discussed here makes YLF very dear to my heart.

My thoughts on this issue and long and complex and not-fully-formed, so I'll just say that the way this was discussed - strangers attacking her social media - make me absolutely cringe. This is why I've given up on the news (except for Reuters which seems to be more interested in facts than commentary) and social media. It is also why I am grateful for communities like YLF, one of those rare gems which brings some nuance to difficult discussions, as well as an overriding concern with being kind and respectful!

I think the internet-call-out method of addressing cultural appropriation is largely ineffective and may do more damage than good. It doesn't help the appropriator understand the harm in what they're doing, and only serves to further entrench the two sides, turning this into yet another us vs them issue.

And when a pile-on is fuelled largely by white folks attacking other white folks, it seems to me the underlying goal is not protecting vulnerable communities, but self-righteousness and virtue signalling.

Moreover, when individual actions -- such as a girl's choice of prom dress -- are targeted and amplified, we lose sight of the forms of appropriation that really do have a negative impact (eg large fast-fashion companies outright stealing designs from and undercutting indigenous artisans). I doubt it's possible to stop either sort of appropriation outright, but it seems to me one is worth fighting, while the other is just an easy target.

Oh honestly ,I despair .The internet just seems to bring out the worst in some people doesn’t it ,and this need to comment on everything (says she commenting!) what ever happened to if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all.I think some people need to get a heathy dose of perspective into their lives and worry more about what they are doing and saying to improve the world rather than what others are up to.

I know there have been some deep and thoughtful discussions here about cultural appropriation in dressing. I'm not looking to rehash what has already been said, but did anyone see this article about a high schooler who wore an item of Chinese apparel to her prom: http://www.msn.com/en-us/lifes.....een%e2%80% ? I was mostly disturbed about the fact that adults jumped on the bandwagon to berate this high school student rather than express their opinions in more civil ways. Here's to more civil discourse about issues that mean a lot to us!
