I like them, and if you wear them as pants I’d go with a loose fitting sweater like in the photo (very ‘80’s/‘90’s! I love it). If the leggings are thick and well made, there shouldn’t be any bum/crotch issues, and they might hide any jiggly bits.
I actually really like this outfit and might try to replicate it for some holiday parties this year (w/o those sandals though, burr...)

I say if you to wear them, then they are pants. I personally prefer a longer top, even with the thicker leggings, but am not bothered by velvet leggings as pants on others

I actually like some leggings as pants because they are so easy and comfortable. It depends on this thickness and style of the leggings. I recently picked up some textured faux suede leggings that have details arounds the knees. It is obvious they are meant to be pants, they have a real waistband. Outside of work I wear them with a loose sweater that just covers my bum and doesn't cling at all. You can see higher up on the hip when I move around and I wear it with a heeled bootie for date night or dressing up. Agree with others that it is a fine line for work. I have worn these to work with a longer loose sweater (well below the bum) and flat tall loose boots so you don't actually see as much leg. I do think the texture reads dressier than plain leggings. My teenage nieces wear the plain black ones with cropped tops which looks much more like workout wear. You should try them with some of your longer tops, I was surprised how much I'm wearing them. It is nice to have an easy, comfy option that is an alternative to jeans.

I Echo Echo. No leggings as pants for me but if you ate absolutely sure that they are opaque, even the back view if you bend over, and not any camel toe to guide the eye to rear or crotch, go ahead if this is a look you are confident wearing. This does not seem like a look that one would ever wear to work. If not too much of your shape is reveled, so much the better. Wear whatever makes you feel fabulous and confident.

So it sounds like you’re torn—you want to feel comfortable wearing these with a shorter top, and ignore your tummy or muffin top (they are not the same thing), because gender and body norms are stupid. But, much as you want to be comfortable, you just aren’t. You could wear spanx to resolve the body issue, but that is bowing to the societal harms in a way you are reeeeeeally not comfortable with. I say, get the soft, cushy, comfy velvet leggings/pants and enjoy them under dresses and with long tops. Try them with shorter tops if you want, but don’t force it. Over time, maybe something will change to make it comfortable to wear them that way, but if it doesn’t, that’s fine. Enjoy.

Honestly it depends on the fit for me. I would generally say no for myself, but a looser pair of crushed velvet pants with elastic waist? Maybe. My daughter wears leggings as pants. It doesn't bother me, I have bigger fish to fry !

FashIntern - I like that idea! I used to wear fleece-lined leggings under dresses in winter. I think this kind could do as a variation to that - unless it gets too cold!

Awesome Torontogirl, thanks so much! So interesting to read :)

Basically I'm all for people wearing what they enjoy, and I love it when people challenge norms and expectations. For me the line for wearing leggings as pants would definitely be with regards to sheerness. If they are not see-through and in a thicker material I could definitely see them as pants at least on others.

For me part of the issue is my tummy where I feel more comfortable in pants which "draw in" the "muffin top" a bit. However, I'm annoyed at the beauty standards creating concepts like "muffin top" and meaning it as something negative. But not quite "there" yet to challenge it completely for myself in how I dress.

However, I love wearing comfortable clothes, and I like the look of skinny pants (on myself as well, regardless of what some might think "suit" my legs/hips - don't really care about that!). But, however stretchy they are, they are always a bit tight over my tummy. I enjoy wearing dresses and living in Sweden means normally needing tights under them as only a couple of months are warm enough for being bare-legged. I'm not a huge fan of hosiery as the feet often crumple up and the waist tends to slide down. Therefore I often wear leggings under dresses - either the sheer ones in hosiery style but without the feet, or thicker, non-sheer ones in cotton. Super comfy, and therefore I love the IDEA of being able to wear thick leggings as a variation to skinny pants. But, still not sure if I'd feel comfortable enough actually doing it.

Phew, that's long! And in conclusion I'd probably love the comfy of thicker leggings such as these in crushed velvet, but feel most comfortable wearing them with longer tops.

Thanks for helping me ventilate and showing me different perspectives

Oh, thanks so much everyone for all your input! I'm actually not sure if I would feel comfortable with crotch and bum visible in these pants - I can definitely see it working on others but perhaps not on me, if I think about it realistically. But I'm drawn towards the super comfyness of outfits such as the one in the pic! I'll definitely try them on if I find them in store, and see how it feels

Hi Karin:) We've debated this issue ad nauseam - whether bum and crotch should be covered when wearing leggings , and the answer is divided and also very personal and bound to bring up strong opinions. Crushed velvet leggings are super luxe for holiday - and would look great with a longer top or blazer and untucked long shirt but I can't quite see them in an office setting .

Oh, haven't been here for ages..! But have thought about YLF so this might be the start of returning :)

A quick question now - how do you feel about this type of thicker leggings worn as pants? (They are described as "crushed velvet leggings") What I mean is worn with regular tops, as in these pics from the website, not tunics or the like (what I'm trying to say is tops that don't cover your bum )

My instinct has been that leggings, even in a thicker material, should only be worn with longer tops. However, as I'm a comfy queen (always aiming for comfy but still of course nice-looking outfits) I'd love to be able to wear leggings as pants with any top!

Of course, each to their own etc, but, I'd love to hear your opinions on this! Thicker leggings worn as pants, or not..?
