Ok thanks for the help ladies....I have to return another jacket, so I'll try the medium while I'm there. I think this is going to end up being the kind of thing I reach for time and again.

Angie, I just wanted to say I found it helpful that you sometimes fit women in jackets that won't quite button over their chests, but fit elsewhere, and that it's okay to buy a jacket that is meant to always be unbuttoned.

This is common theme for me. I'll take an hour in the dressing room going back and forth back and forth between two sizes, not sure which to go with.... always thinking "well it should be buttonable... but the smaller one makes me look slimmer unbuttoned and fits better in the shoulders and length... the larger one buttons but the lengthwise proportions are all wrong." (This is particularly true when it is not petite sizing).

... and I analyze whether the buttons can be moved just a smidge. I know the button holes can't be moved... but sometimes that's all I need... to have the buttons moved to give me just a pinch more space in the midsection/chest.

What I like about the style of Nicole's jacket (other than the ribbon detailing - very nice!) is the three buttons being so close together (defines her waist), and the placement of the pockets. Perhaps if they were slightly slanted they'd give even more waist definition (tip from your recent blog). The top button looks like it is in the perfect place to "lock and load" her chest, if she wants to do that.

So Nicole if you do try on the smaller size .... and it fits better in the shoulders and sleeves etc... but you still want something that can be buttoned since you're thinking of this as an outdoor blazer... check to see how much room there is to move the buttons closer to the edge. That's the simplest thing in the world to do.

Everyone needs a smart casual black jacket. You love black and white and think how fab it will look with your jeans , white un-tucked AT shirt ,fab closed shoes and SNN (one of my own flop-proof outfit combinations). I say go for it – but try the smaller size first just to be sure. I think this one fits nicely though. I can’t really see the ribbon detail but I love the sound of it. This jacket is going to look great with skirts too. And you love skirts!

You also mentioned the interest in a little black biker. You would rock that look. That’s a warmer jacket though, and also a different animal. There is room for both.

I know it's meant as a blazer or indoor jacket, but I rarely get cool enough when I'm indoors in the winter to wear a blazer. I find it too much warmth. But I like the look of a blazer worn with a casual outfit as a jacket when the temps are between 60 and 40 f.

I could go back and try a medium--I didn't even try one on in the store. But I don't like to feel confined in a structured jacket, so a medium might be too tight across my back and shoulders. But you are right, I probably wont be wearing buttoned all that much.

So, is it worth keeping as an outdoor jacket?

I don’t think the jacket is too short. But the sleeves are at least two inches too long (which I know you know). I like the way it fits. I can see waist definition. Does it feel too loose around the waist?

As strange as this may sound, I fit women in jackets that won’t close across the bust if the fit is perfect everywhere else. Un-buttoned jackets are very slimming and I see no need for closure for the sake of closure.

This is an indoor jacket, Nicole. You can keep it on inside as well as outside. Was that your outerwear quezzie? It gets an 8 once the sleeves are altered.

My mother is capable of any alterations, so taking it in at the waist will be no problem. If I can't realistically shorten the sleeve without losing the ribbon accent trim, which is more important to keep? I guess proper sleeve length outweighs minor embellishment. But my mother is a bit of a miracle worker, and I suspect she could figure something out. Either removing the ribbon and replacing it, cutting off the ribbon, shortening the sleeve and reattaching it inconspicuously. I don't think I could go down a size on the jacket though because it fits over my bust and seems to fit well in the shoulder.

I think it's just a tad big and is not showing your waist. The sleeves are long, as others have mentioned. And my first thought was that a longer top underneath would strike just the right note. With those mods it will be a go to piece for you. Solid 8.

I don't think it's too short at all. And it has enough interesting detail/texture to make it not just "any" black jacket. And we live in MA, where wearing black is basically a part of the culture! I get a lot of use out of my black jackets, and plan on buying one or two more this year. I find they are versatile, and appropriate for Boston area.

I think the three buttons are perfectly placed. The sleeves may need altering and if you find out whether they can save the ribbon trim, let me know, because I need to do the same alteration with my new jacket.

I'd also ask the tailor/your mom (aren't they the same??) to take a few strategic darts in at the back, to give you just a tad more waist definition.

P.s. The green cardi in the next photo is a fabulous color on you. Stunning.

In general I like the jacket. I don't think that it's too black or too short - it would look great with a longer top underneath. I think that it's a bit loose so I would take it in a bit at the waist. I'd also shorten the sleeves a little.

I just threw it on over my interview outfit because I had the camera set up and figured it was easier to take the photos all at once.

I can have any necessary alterations done, but there is a ribbon detail around the lapel and the sleeve. Shortening the sleeve might lose the ribbon. I'd have to ask my mother if it's possible to shorten it without losing that detail.

Nicole, I will be interested to hear what other say about this, because to me, it is too short - but I haven't really got used to the whole shorter jacket thing yet. Not too black. I think the fit may be a bit too loose. I'd give it a 7

I would probably wear it as a outer jacket in the fall, more than a blazer as part of an outfit. Is it too short? How does it fit overall? Is it too "black"?
