You’ve got your thinking cap on, Marianne. Either chestnut or yellow are great versatile options. It’ll also work with the new green cardi you got at the swap!

I like the Fossil bag in chestnut. Fossil bags are not my style, personally, and I don't like contrast stitching on bags in general, but I could see how this one would work well if you love it. Finding a great bag is hard work, isn't it?

Oh, you kept the fire truck red coat. How happy I am to hear that :-)

I love the style of this bag, and other Fossil bags (you can see more styles at the online Fossil site). I think the chestnut is very pretty and very versatile. A lighter/brighter color might be more fun for spring and summer (love your idea of cream or yellow), but if you're looking for an all-season bag then it's probably a good choice.

Sarah, it does look very nice in green, I wouldn't have noticed myself!

Angie, I am still undecided about color. I need it to work with my black and white jackets, but also with the new fire truck red coat. I was thinking something like camel or tan or maybe yellow. Is it not a good idea? I imagine the Fossil store has a better color selection. Zappos has the third bag in this chestnut color that I like:
Would it work for summer?

I own a cross-body bag for days when I know I'll need to carry lots of stuff to or from the library. Practicality wins when you have to carry six or seven books around all day.

For lugging my things around town for work these types of bags work best for me. I carry a musical instrument on my back so there is no room for an over the shoulder bag and purses for the crook of my arm are a no-no since I can't afford to stress the tendons in my forearms (injuries). I'm well endowed and I can only get away with cross-body bags when I wear a coat. Summer is a problem because I feel too self-conscious with the strap.

Ooh, I love the first bag in dark green! I think you're right about it being a style and not body type thing (although, I wonder if being bigger busted has anything to do with why I don't carry these?). My sister is definitely more casual than I am, and she's been a fan of cross-body bags since she was 12.

Ooh thanks for Fossil rec, Angie! I haven't looked at their bags in years. I need to brace myself and go to Macy's with my coupons :)

Thanks for the warning, Carissa! No, I am fairly small-chested, but I know what you mean :)

Brianna, those Hype bags are lovely, and the price is great. However, my concern is that they are too big and heavy, additional 3lb is a lot to haul around. This seems to be an issue with many more expensive bags right now :(

What do you guys think of these Fossil ones:
http://www.fossil.com/webapp/w.....d=22026368

I just want to make sure that your chest is a good match for a cross-body bag. If the wearer is well endowed, a cross body bad sometimes falls in the awkward space between the breasts and draws attention.

This is JUST what you need! I was just going to link you to that post, Marianne! My Mum-on-the-go posts suggest sling bags as fabulous practical alternatives to totes. I used to sport slings all the time 5-10 years ago, but my neck started hurting so I switched to bags that I could hold in the crook of my arm.

Have you looked at Fossil? They have GREAT sling bags.

Marianne, I'm on the hunt for a great cross-body bag and may end up getting one custom-made by a seller on Etsy. It will be $$$ though. I personally dislike messenger style bags except for when I need to carry my laptop, and for that I have one of these in an interesting yellow-green vintage brocade vinyl: http://www.flat-bags.com/

There are a lot of cross-body bags out there that are roomy but don't look like messengers. This is what I prefer for day-to-day things. Hype has a few great ones on Bluefly right now:

Thank you for your thoughts ladies! Kari, thanks so much for doing the research, of course I like the most expensive bag you posted, D&B, but it's more than I want to spend. I did look on Zappos and 90% of them seem to be very casual and almost "gear", that's why I was wondering about them being in style. A lot of them seem to be very square, which I am also not sure about.

I really like the blue one you posted Marianne, and Kari's examples are lovely too. I don't think these are not 'in' at the moment. And they are so different from the traditional brown leather ones (a bit boring, I have one;-)

My bag is probably an exception, but the dye always rubs off and stains my tops (can't get the stains out either-(

Marianne, there are a TON on Zappos - both more casual, sporty styles and more polished, dressy styles. You can actually run a search for "bags" and "crossover" to see them all. (Apologies if you already know this.)

I'm not sure what floats your boat or exactly what your budget is, but here are some that I thought were fun and less on the casual side since it sounds like that's what you're going for. The only issue to watch out for is that the dressier bags seem to have skinnier straps, so overfilling the bag could be uncomfortable on your shoulder. I hope this helps a bit.

Shiny, I am not ready to invest in Coach. I've looked at that line before and it's def. nice. But the messenger style is a high priority for me right now because I am not working, I walk a lot and spend most of my time with kids and I need my hands readily available without awkward balancing. When I (hopefully) go back to work, I would use it on weekends and while traveling. I'd use a different type of bag for work.
The Piperlime bag is just an example - I like the fact that it's convertible and it's fairly simple. I am just not sure what I should be looking for because a lot of these bags have a casual vibe, and I am also intrigued by Angie's "retro" recommendation.
I really like backpacks for walking, too (*ducking*), but getting stuff out of them quickly is a hassle, so they don't meet all my needs.

I don't wear these for a very simple reason, and that is that I feel in some weird way they call attention to my chest. I guess it's the strap crossing through the middle?

I have a long history of back problems so I understand the attraction completely. But, personally, for my back, I vastly prefer backpacks. I have a stylish Kate Spade backpack - it's not as roomy as the one you show from piperlime though. But it gives my back a break, and also leaves me hands-free.

The piperlime one is convertible, isn't it? That is a plus in my book. And the color is lovely. I don't think it's the same as a retro messenger bag. I'd say it is more of a fashionable messenger bag.

Have you tried Coach's ergonomic line? Just a thought. I don't know if that is in your price range, but I can vouch for this line. I carried one of their medium ergo bags all throughout spain for two weeks a few years ago and it performed beautifully. No back pain - but admittedly the bag was on the small side. I don't use that bag so much anymore because of the color, but I might be tempted to duplicate it if for example they had it in a red or yellow or other fun color.

Sarah, it would be hard for me to picture you with a bag like this - your style is so different and more polished. I don't think it has anything to do with the shape!

I was thinking of something like this but in a different color and price:
http://piperlime.gap.com/brows.....=625127002

I just reread Angie's post about messenger bags - it's from 2006 but I hope it's still valid! Now my additional question is - what is an example of a retro messenger bag?

http://youlookfab.com/2006/04/.....nvenience/

I personally do not carry then since it doesn't appear to me that they flatter my body shape at all.
My husband has one for his laptop for work, and I like the concept and look a lot.
So yes, I think it can work but I have no experience since the few I've tried look silly on me.

What do you guys think of cross-body/messenger style bags? Are they still out of style? No matter how much I like the totes, I've realized that what works best for my daily activities is a medium sized bag with a cross-body strap. The only one I have is very casual, so I was wondering if you have any suggestions for something more attractive that doesn't break the bank.
Thank you!
