I use it on planes for extra warmtth without seatbelt bulk, to rein in the top of voluminous outfits, as a substitute for a cropped blazer, and over t-shirts. If you are planning to wear mostly trousers, I like to add a cropped cardi with a longer length tank for some contrast and layering options. It may be that it's not the cropped length but the lack of structure that isn't doing it for you. I feel much more fab in a jacket than a cardi but keep a few to pop into a bag if needed for warmth.
