Cerinda, thanks--that's how I feel about the look as they are. I think they might look more elegant if I took them at the sides. I was playing around today with them and know what I'd have to do. Still contemplating the effort-vs-desire for them.

thanks, columbine--I'm leaning toward keeping the Halogens.

unfrumped, those are great points about the tops and proportions. Thank you!

I like the flares compared to these particular EF's.

I'm on the fence about how to style the tops. The higher waist on these + tucked top( contrasting color) + crop gives me the shrunken pants vibe. I think a longer top would be interesting to see , just wearing it without a semituck, for example. ( for the base layer-not the topper). Of course this is probably my style filter at work, but also with your long legs you don't need to move the waist up, you can afford some top length.

Yes, Sharan, the fit is funny on the EFs (even for someone who wears a lot of EF trous). I think they project funk more than elegance, but you do funk really well when you choose it. In light of Angie's post, I've done some preliminary try-ons, and these seem to cry out for the close-the-gap approach; sadly, not for Team Wear. And while Angie calls them culottes, they're more like a cropped wide-leg on this body -- definitely funk. You're spot on about these being an acquired taste and needing conscious styling.

I loved the Halogen pants, they looked great in all the outfits. I like the idea of the EFs, but something isn't quite right about them, though the color is great with the jackets. That's so amazing you made them!

I am interested to see the response to your question about the length of the cropped flares. I purchased these in the petite size to get the leg length correct (I'm 5'4"). I tried them on briefly yesterday and I wondered, same as you, if they were an inch or two too long and maybe too narrow at the bottom. And then I laughed at myself for so readily deciding that I needed super-short, super-flared pants, but I kind of still think I do.

Suz, I like "elegant." That's an aspiration for me. The Eileen Fisher pants don't really feel elegant to me. The Madewell culottes I tried several weeks ago felt elegant. I returned them, then made a kind of similar pair, in a shade of burgundy I like better. I will get around to showing them one of these days (I promise).

Rachylou, I'm wondering if you are wanting more drape in the culotte look. I think I am. I was drawn to the fitted top of these pants, though, which, combined with the sort of thick fabric, gives them less flow.

Style Fan, ha ha! I can do the drapey, not-very-fitted styles, but I have yet to make a pair of very fitted pants that I really like. Or that I really like for longer than a day or two.

Skylurker, thank you for your great analysis. To me, both of these styles are kind of an acquired taste, and my eye is still adjusting to both of them. I appreciate your thoughts on the footwear choices with them.

Thank you for weighing in, Aquamarine.

Amy, I'm surprised--I kind of thought the booties were the easiest pairing with both pants. Such a range of opinion here--it's so interesting.

Xtabay, come to think of it, I haven't had luck with Eileen Fisher pants beyond the knit harems and the skirted leggings. Oh, and I've worn skinny jeans by EF.

I'd have to go with the Halogens, and I love the ways you've styled them. The length looks fine to me, but I'm not an expert on PPL.

Arrgh, Eileen Fisher pants NEVER work on me, no matter what style I pick. There's always something off about them. But I keep trying because I love the fabrics!

I like the fit of the Halogen, flattering.
I like them best with the black boots - because it elongates the leg line probably - and least with the oxfords - because the shortness of the pants doesn't look intentional that way.

I don't like the EF. I admit I have trouble understanding how these voluminous EF stuff is supposed to fit. But I agree with your assessment that you're between sizes. Seems there's too much fabric around your hips in the large, and the back rise is too short in the small.
Besides, I don't like the pairing with any of the shoes, I don't know what kind of shoes would work with wide limp hems like that.

And, yes, awesome metallic jacket.

Hmmm, just at first glance I think the EF crops are just too big. The smaller size does look better but doesn't sound like the fit thru the rise and waist are good. The fact that you can alter (& make gorgeous) clothes I am in awe of but like you said, they might not be worth the trouble. I say hold out, something better is out there in charcoal.

Halogen kick flares do look good (unsure on length-I'm not a good judge). All the footwear options look good as well. But yes, they are black. Maybe with their success they will come out with a charcoal version.

Oh for heaven's sake.

You were MADE for pants, woman!!

They all look fantastic on you!!!!

In all seriousness, I'm with Lisa here -- i think the EFs are fantastic for your style and these look really good. They're quite elegant, especially with the stunning metallic jacket / Vince blouse combo. (And by the way, are you taking orders for that jacket, because I want one.)

But I also see a place for the black kick crops which also look good -- I think of them as maybe a more casual pant.

I'm with you on wishing that it were easier to find charcoal, by the way. I ordered a pair of the Halogens also, in typical lemming fashion, even though I already own -- how many? Um...I think 4 pair of black pants, none of which I wear terribly often because black is not a mainstay of my wardrobe, but all of which I got simply because I wanted to try a new pant silhouette and guess what, it only came in black!!!

If the EFs still feel too big, is it something you can alter?

The Eileen Fisher cropped wide-leg pants in charcoal appealed to me for their color and silhouette. I like the idea of updating my fall/winter pants with some of the newer cropped flare or wide-leg styles. And I much prefer charcoal to black, for my wardrobe.
I didn't get to try these pants on in the store (or, I did try them, but a few sizes up, in the black). So I ordered them, in my best guess at the "size down" that is recommended. When I got them and tried them on, they seemed too big. So I ordered the next size down, and those are definitely too small. I could alter the larger ones, but I'm not sure whether I want to go to the trouble, because a) I don't know how I feel about the style on me, and b) I wish they were a slightly darker shade of charcoal.

On a lemming impulse, after seeing all the excitement about the Halogen cropped flares from Angie and forum members, I ordered them, in my best guess at my size. They fit perfectly. The problem is, they are black--why don't they come in charcoal???!!--and I have a really nice pair of black ankle pants that I would wear with essentially the same things I'd wear these pants with. Still, I'm leaning toward keeping them, just for that update--i.e., adding the new silhouette.

Here are the photos, for your perusal.

1-6: Halogen cropped flares, with different tops and footwear options.

5-10: Eileen Fisher wide-leg crops, in the size I would wear, with different tops and footwear options.

11-12: Eileen Fisher wide-leg crops, in the next size down--which is too small, even if it's not evident in the photos (too short in the crotch and tight at the waist and high hip)--but just to see for comparison.

If I do keep the Halogen pants, do they need to be an inch shorter?

Thanks for looking! I welcome your thoughts! And maybe seeing these styles on me will help some of you who are considering them.
