Here's a link to how I wore mine (haven't had enough warm days to wear more than once so far): http://www.weardrobe.com/pictu.....05-18-2011

I definitely agree that the jacket and pants should be split up. I think you could treat them like any bermuda short as far as tops/shoes are concerned, but if you want to play down the trendiness of the pant style keeping those elements on the classic side would do the trick. E.g. a sleeveless colorful blouse with a metallic sandal, a light colored tank with a colorful cropped cardigan and nude heel, a light shirt with a darker blazer and darker shoe (like navy).

@Aida-could you send me a picture link and idea of a top/shoe combo? I can't bear to do it with the jacket, but will consider for casual/upscale casual look as long as I don't look like I'm trying to re-live my Jr high days.

At the risk of sounding cheeky, if you're going to keep only the jacket I think it'd be fun to do the blouson alteration to the pants (even if it feels too trendy) so in a couple weeks when you think, "I kind of want to try that!" you'll have 'em

Jacket looks very good with the white jeans! I also do like it with the skirt - for a business look.

Have you considered swapping out the buttons? With the blakc skirt, they look planned (are they black?), but with the white jeans they catch my eye first (could just be the pic?) It might be more wearable with big white buttons. . .

I completely empathize with your feeling about pant lengths and what is flattering to you. I believe I fall into the same camp. Whether or not anybody else says it's okay, I think my shorter, more muscular-legged body looks better in just-above-the-knee shorts, or long pants; anything in between gets dicey. And somehow doesn't feel right, you know?

Re the jacket: I think it highlights your curves really nicely in #5. And you're right, shortening would interfere with the other details. (Of course you could remove the pockets if you wanted...but that sounds like a LOT of alteration for a salvage piece.) In the end, the idea to wear it as is with darker long pants sounds like a great plan! Definitely worth keeping in the closet, and see whether you wear it an enjoy wearing it as is.

Wow you did a lot of work here! I love the way the jacket fits you and I would like it with jeans. I feel it is too long for a skirt and I agree that shortening it messes with the pocket placement. So, IMO, you have a gorgeous jacket to wear with jeans that really shows of your figure in a most sophisticated way!!! That's great.

@Rae-I'm so glad you asked whether I needed a suit. I really don't. I have other suits and suit separates I like better and would always choose over this combo. So the exercise now is really to see if either piece could be salvaged.

@girlX-If I had BOS, I would be wearing more leather, not working on this suit
getup : ) Angie-Does this mean biker chick is my fashion alter ego?!

@aida-The material does works to create a blouson hem and I tried this, but the look is trendier than what I'm comfortable with. I hope I'm not showing my age too bad. It was a great suggestion.

@cjh-the buttons and stripes are very dark navy, almost black. I have various pants, jeans, bermudas and skirts in black or saturated blue denim that will work. The patterned shirt is a great idea. I have very few patterned tops in my closet, so that will be homework. I need to get my color from shoes or jewelry because I rarely carry bags.

From previous suggestions, I tried rolling right under my knee, but didn't like that either. The only length I like is bermuda shorts above the knee. I think my new dressing rule might be no pants between 10 inch inseam shorts and full inseam pants. Every other leg length looks frumpy on my body-- I think it's a combination of short height and curvy thighs.

The pieces will part ways. I already lived through the long jacket/bermuda short suit in the early 90's and I keep having visions of Angus Young in an English school boy uniform.

I like the jacket and the way it fits. I just don't want to look dated. Should the hem be shortened as @Suz suggests? I prefer shorter, but I'm concerned that the lower pocket will lose proportion if the hemline is reduced. What do you think? I've added new pics to the original post. There is no jacket lining and I have a tailor that does restyling.

Pic 4-Current jacket hemline with white jeans (mostly to show full length pants, I think I would prefer dark jeans to create contrast)
Pic 5-Current jacket hemline with dark denim pencil skirt
Pic 6-Paper clipped the hemline 2 inches shorter.

How drapey is the fabric? Something tapered and pulled up a bit shorter than #3 but with a little blouson could look really fun (I recently did this to a pair of white capris and I love how it turned out).

#3 pants look great, and even a little shorter like GirlX advises would be better.

What else do you have that you would put with these pieces if you separate them? Time to pull out other pieces and try them, post photos! Are the buttons black or navy? If black, try a black pencil skirt and black sandals with that cranberry top and jacket, with a colorful bag, like this
http://www.target.com/gp/detai.....&LNM=|B003PGUM8Q&CPNG=&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=B003PGUM8Q&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001

If navy, some dark denim knee length shorts and a light printed tshirt (pattern mixing!) under the jacket like this in the True Navy color option.
http://www.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.....d=external|80480

I'm going to throw a wrench in the machine here.

- What do you need these pieces for? Did you still need a suit? If you need suits, then I vote to just taper and wear a lighter colored heel (white? silver?) to keep the white line going down to your feet. I think clam-length bottoms are counter to the purpose of a suit.

- If you are just salvaging each piece separately, then I think the above advice is fine. The jacket still looks really good!

I'm voting with everyone else here...shorten/taper the pants, and wear as separates.

However....if you are really into alterations...the jacket seems to have a nice shape at the waist, and if you would prefer a more cropped shape, I wonder how hard that would be to do? Depends on the jacket's construction. I am not a seamstress so cannot say and I know that if you have to take it apart, it is probably not worth it. But if not, worth considering?

#3, or even a little shorter, like 1-2 hem lengths. But by the time you're doing that I'm not sure if the jacket works any more, it would really be helpful if it was a more cropped style.

My vote would be to turn the pants into clams or bermudas, and wear the jacket with something else.

#3 is a huge improvement! Definitely keep the jacket. Go a little bit higher (another inch) on the rolls and then you can keep the pants too. I think with the right mood, the right accessories, balls of steel, and a total owning of the look - the jacket and pants could be worn as a suit. But most of the time, I'd keep them far apart.

Angie's blog post on creating a long leg line with cropped pants motivated me to start working on the violators in my closet. http://youlookfab.com/2011/06/.....ped-pants/

These suit separates have been sitting in my closet for several years unworn. I'm not sure if its the "matchy-matchy" jacket and pants, the weird pant length, the shape of my legs, and/or the jacket is too long and outdated that prevents me from feeling good about wearing it. I am 5'2, short waisted, muscular legs.

#1-right leg is how the hem looks now/left leg is tapered with paper clips
#2-both legs tapered with paper clips, hem is at ankle
#3-both legs rolled up to end under my calf

Do the pants need to find a new home or be tailored?
Does the jacket need to find a new home or can I salvage it?
Do the pants and jacket need to be broken up?
