I like the jeans in all the versions. Great workhorse. FWIW I don't do the cropped flared or crop kick jeans. Too much work. And I would have to buy different footwear.

So far this summer, they've gotten more wear than I thought they would: pegged with sandals (IRL) and unrolled with moto boots (festival gear). They haven't turned out to be the summer workhorse I had in mind; that's been the really washed-out Gap skinnies.

I like these best peg-rolled, with either shoes. Basically worn as one would wear BF jeans. For true kick crop-flare, I would get a pair that is tailored through the thighs. Also wanted to say that these soft colors look lovely on you.
BTW, I have a straight cropped pair that is supposed to be fitted but stretches out a lot with wear so they end up looking fairly similar to yours. I am planning on taking them to the tailor to take them in the upper leg area all the way to the knee.

Bring it on, people. Treat this as a lab. One of the most liberating ideas I have picked up here (Thanks, Angie!) is I can try a trend just for fun; it's an experiment, not a mistake (so long as it's in my budget, and this one is). I have some tentative ideas about what these need, and once the forum has delivered its collective wisdom, I'll check back, consider/reconsider and divulge.

I have not tried it yet, but it does look like a tough trend to me. I agree with others that you should roll the jeans. They aren't tight enough in the thigh and flared enough for the cropped flare look. But you still look good!

Smite, Angie, Xtabay, Aida: Thanks for the help identifying the real issue: it's not the fit, it's the cut! And the cut isn't bad, simply not what I had in mind. Christina, thanks for the links.

BethAnn, Maneera: Hoping for 5 minutes and decent light tomorrow so I can post with flats. Hot water is a real possibility. I wore the jeans all day today and they are a sloppy mess. And yes, Shevia, Aida, will add a roll.

Runcarla, I'm a little over 5'8" and short waisted. It's a mystery to me why I have to have so many of my trousers hemmed. LisaP may have the answer: it never occurred to me that it may be my femur length. That explains a lot of things; for example why I have to wear such long shorts to look even reasonably well-proportioned (hit that golden 2:1).

Thank you all SO MUCH for the kind words on the outfit. I'm determined to move into mid-tone and light neutrals this S/S and it really is stretching me beyond my comfort zone (20 years as a PIB: recovery is a process). I bought this leather jacket partially to serve as a crowbar: yes, I love the lines and the fit and the feel; yes, it suits my style and lifestyle; and guess what? it looks deathly dull with dark neutrals (it only took about five minutes walking it around the sales floor to see that).

Can we officially designate cropped flares and straights the top Tough Trend of SS16?

I like this outfit a lot, Cerinda. But I can see why you have doubts. Because the fit of these jeans is relaxed overall, you aren't exactly getting the whole on-trend 'cropped flare' look with these boots. I think the flares could be a tad shorter----1 or 2" higher than they are now. I also think you'll get the proportions just right when you wear these with slip on sneakers, oxfords or any other flat/heeled shoes and sandals. Try them with shoes other than boots, assess how you like the proportions, and then decide if you want to shorten them. In all honesty, these do look good on you and this outfit of neutrals is quite fab!

Length of jeans aside , this is a really nice outfit . Grey jacket and boots , cream coloured t- all pretty colours on you. You have long legs from hip to knee - and that's maybe what's throwing you off here . Let's face it - this cropped flare thing is a tough one , and I'm not convinced it's very conventionally flattering , despite it's popularity here .

At 5'5, I'm having a difficult time finding cropped flares that are short enough - and I'm an hourglass which adds another level of complication. My best look was the tighter fit through thighs so the flare was more noticeable. I had luck with the Loft curvy fit Kick Crop in regular.
http://www.loft.com/curvy-kick.....aultColor=

I am craving more of a flare so am continuing to look.

I tried the Madwell Cali Demi-Boot Jean. I LOVED the fit and finish on these. But, they were not cropped and hit my ankle. These would be hard to hem.
https://www.madewell.com/madew.....5296/E5296.

I tried the J Crew Billie demi-boot crop jean. I needed the petite sizing to hit a good length. The waist is very high so I'm not sure I'm keeping these yet.
https://www.jcrew.com/womens_f...../E7755.jsp

I want to try some Mother jeans because they seem to really exaggerate the flare. This would be a super splurge for me.
https://www.shopbop.com/hustle.....v_1&a

Hmmm. Interesting what Angie and Aida wrote. During my search for white jeans this week, I came across a store with a pile of white denim that had all the hems rolled. When I tried them on, the roll was so high on my calf - it cut the circulation. I unrolled the hems, and lo-and-behold! - there was a flare!

Though on the borderline, I'm not a true 'tall'. I'm 5 ft 7in +/-, but my inseam is 35 in. Regular crops are just about perfect on me, which leads me to believe regular sized folk (if there even is such a creature) need to either size down, or try petites to hit the crop sweet spot.

I see the same thing as Angie. These read more like a cropped/unrolled BF, and versus cropped flares generally needing to be fitted on the thigh. So, opposite of the question of ease you're asking! If you can get a little pegged roll they're be a cute slim BF.

How do they look styled with shoes or sandals? I think you might like the lighter, looser look with warm weather styling. If not, there's always -- wash them in hot water and put them in the dryer! If you're really displeased with them as is, that would make them a bit shorter and smaller!

I agree with you that this fit is not giving you the flared look you're after.
I think you would have to find something that flares out more, and is tighter through the thigh.

Maybe more than anything else I've seen lately, cropped flares look wildly different on different bodies. I was excited to try a pair to refresh my denim. Now? Not so much.

Pictured, Gap crop flares. These are actually 2 1/2' above my ankle, and just barely clear the boots (the cognac ghillies and white gladiators I will wear later are not nearly so high).

What do you say to the length?
What about the fit? Do cropped flares need more ease to look right?

I'm not loving the look: insufficiently intentional. Hemming or chopping will compromise what little flare these jeans have. I also think they're way too big. So maybe I'll mentally move them to the gear capsule and use them for hiking and mucking around creeks and rivers and so forth. I'm hoping the BRs come back into stock in my size, but my budget doesn't have room for another mistake.

I greatly appreciate your feedback!
