Although I've always been a V-neck fan, I agree with Annagybe that somehow crew necks are looking fresher. I see shevia's point that flattery should trump trends... and it doesn't mean, to me, that V-necks are dated; just that crews are newly interesting.

I used to find crews too sporty, but now I think they add a bit of an edge to an otherwise classic or feminine outfit.

Re: the jeans. The crotch does look a little low to me and the whole fly area (what's the correct term???), as a result, very long. But it's just me...

A great question. I prefer v-necks when I want to show off my short necklaces and I do think they are more flattering (on me anyway, I'm a pretty pear shape with broad shoulders). However, I prefer crewnecks in the warm months because then I don't have to worry about sunscreen on my neck.

I'm not much of a t-shirt person, so can't really give you any input on them. Those GAP jeans got my attention though and so I checked them out - the rise is several inches longer than on their Sexy Boyfriends - so I guess you could decide if you wanted to wear them higher on your waist - or lower in the crotch!

Just read this article about necklines in WSJ. I'm pasting it because of paywall

http://www.wsj.com/articles/th.....1423086508

Q: I have always avoided turtlenecks because my neck is short and my face is full so I look deformed. But since I lost weight, my neck is sagging even more and I wonder, what I might do (short of plastic surgery!) fashion-wise such as wear certain colors or even necklaces.

—B.T., Des Plaines, Ill.

A: A turtleneck may hide an aging neck, but most mature women will find that they look prettier and younger in an open neckline, wrinkles notwithstanding.

Try this optical trick that’s popular with movie stars and TV anchors of both sexes. Put on a crisp white shirt, always leaving the top couple of buttons open and pop the stand-up collar so it grazes (and partly hides) the sides of your neck. You’ve created a flattering portrait neckline that sets off your face, downplaying your neck altogether.

Or try a V-neck sweater, jacket or dress featuring a narrow, ruffled collar. If you wear your hair a bit longer, layered right below your chin, with wispy bangs (think Diane Keaton), you’re gently framing your face and neck.

Now choose your necklaces carefully. Skinny gold chains with a pendant and pearl chokers tend to sink into the crevices of your neck. Instead choose bold, chunky translucent beads and stones or a chunky crystal necklace that falls near your collarbone. Such see-through necklaces reflect light and brighten your face. Also a long bright print scarf (never a neckerchief) folded loosely around your V-neck (leave some skin showing) creates a pretty frame.

Men will find a neck-friendly silhouette in a zip-front merino wool turtleneck sweater left unzipped to around your collarbone. With that patch of skin exposed, you look lively and elongated—not stuffed into a turtleneck or a crew neck that creates a severe line across the base of your neck.

Remember that an open or V-neck will always be more attractive than a turtleneck—and stop feeling bad about your neck! Let’s hear it for bright colors, bold primary colors like red, orange or purple .They’re assertive and youthful and not as drab as black and taupe all the time.

Pose for photos head-on, and not in profile. Stand straight up with your head high, always with a smile that will pull up your neck as well. And for any formal portrait or close-up, do what every public figure does: Use digital retouching to lightly rejuvenate your face and neck.

I prefer a moderate v or scoop. For me, there's a comfort factor. I find collars that touch the front of my neck very uncomfortable and am always tugging them down to avoid feeling like choking. Also, something about my shoulders/back makes tops shift *backward* on me, which exacerbates the choking feeling on crew and boat necks.

I have a short neck and upper body too, so I think v necks are probably the most conventionally flattering anyway. My true love is weird asymmetrical necklines, so long as they're not choking!

I look absolutely awful in crew necks. And in shallow v-necks. it has to do with the proportions of my shoulders and chest. So I think you need to get what works best on your body. Flattering is always the most stylish!

Can't comment on the jeans - I personally wouldn't wear them, as I don't think they'd look good on me at ALL. Nor do I think they look good on the model.

My preference on the two you are showing is the v-neck because the crew neck seems very close to the neck.
But it will all depend on your body type and personal preference, what makes you feel more comfortable.
Regarding the bf jeans...I don't know, they seem to be getting too low on the crotch and I feel that we are moving a little bit away from such pronounced bf styles.

I wear all kinds of necklines, but I find v-necks or a narrower (not wide) scoop-neck the most flattering on me.

I really can't see a neckline as classic as a crew neck or v-neck or even scoop-neck as "dated." They've all been around forever.

I tend to prefer v-neck, even though I am small busted and have short hair. I do pay attention to how deep the v is to prevent my bra from showing. I don't mind wearing a scarf with them either. Crews still remind me of all the basic tees I wore for most of my life so they are a fine basic but not very exciting to me.

My older daughter has a round face, like me, and we both feel v necks or moderately scooped necks look better on us. A crew neck makes me feel chubbier for some reason. We have medium necks and are somewhat short from neck to top of bust so deep v shape is not good. My younger daughter has a slim oval face and she can wear any neckline.

The jeans look odd to me. The back view seems fine but the front looks like there is room for a true "boyfriend" shape, if you know what I mean, and also makes the model's legs look short and wide. Since she is a model, that is probably not the case. I'd have to see them on a real person, or try them on to make a better judgment.

With both items , tops and jeans, try them on and see how you feel and how you like them on YOU.

I have broad shoulders and medium chest. Crew necks work best. They seem to gather the interest to the face and have a "shrinking effect" on my shoulders and chest. And I think I like that they feel even more minimal.

I usually can't wear V-s because they're too low but I love a high V if I can find it. Some I generally get crew or boatneck, But then some crew's , which should be my style, are so high they bother me and don't drape as well --I like me an easy-fitting fluid crew.

So what I found is it's very top/brand -specific and I have to try them on.

Eh, I think v-necks are a bit dated. It reminds me of when James Perse stuff was everywhere.
Currently for me and what I'm seeing out there, crew necks are more current.
Looking at Barneys offerings of four pages of t-shirts. Saw about three true v-necks and a smattering of scoop necks, the rest crew necks.

I have a shorter neck and larger bust. For me v-necks (or scoop necks or cowl necks) create a better line and lengthening effect. If I choose a higher neckline I need to use some other trick to create that effect (column of colour , long necklace etc).

I think it depends on your body type if you're looking for which is more flattering. I much prefer a v-neck on myself but I also will wear a slight boat neck. Crewnecks I will wear sometimes, but they are just not my personal favorite - they feel too constricting for my preferred loose style. I will say if you like to wear toppers, I feel like v-necks don't always work as well with them.

I personally prefer a v-neck for dressier situations, but that's just me. Mostly because a crew neck just looks like a smaller men's tee in my mind... but I do agree that body proportions should be considered, just don't have any advice on how to do that! Wow, I'm really unhelpful here haha

Agree with Suz. I have a short neck, small bust and shoulders, but larger upper arms, which means that the V-neck on me is theoretically both flattering and unflattering. In practice, I used to love wearing them, but increasingly grew uncomfortable with the fact that a) all my V-necks, by the end of a day's wear, end up revealing or nearly revealing my bra, because I am small chested; and b) my bra/chest is easily exposed just by leaning over slightly. I prefer crew necks and button downs for this reason.

It depends on your body type, hair length, neck length. On me, V necks are NOT more flattering. Crew necks are better at balancing my proportions. But if you have a short neck or a large bust or longer hair, a V might be better.

I'm not sure about those jeans. Would need to see in person or on a body.

I'm on the hunt to replace some tees this spring. These ones at the GAP look promising and are a good price. My question is, are you a crew neck or v-neck kinda gal? I find the v-neck very elongating and flattering and somehow dressier than a crew neck. However, I prefer a crew neck for wearing any neck wear like a scarf (which I really don't wear often) or for some layering. Of course, I have a few of each in my cart at the moment.

What's your preference?

PS What do you think of the cut of the authentic boyfriends? It appears they have dropped the crotch a bit more. I would say I'm intrigued, but I really do have plenty of jeans.
