I haven’t read the book or seen the movie (my son and I both have a hard time sitting through a whole movie when we can’t do anything else).

This article has me a little more interested. Old wealth/new money is not a new story, of course, but is more interesting than money, money, money. There’s a line in it that explained something I’ve never understood about the crazy expensive stunts—when you and your peers are all stupefyingly rich, it isn’t a big deal to buy things, but having a crazy, creative idea and pulling it off (with tons of $$$$) shows that you have something “extra”. https://www.bloomberg.com/news.....ight-think

Now I’m going to read Annagybe’s article.

Oh gosh. My bff brought that up. I’ve already forgotten, but I think the family spoke Mandarin with the girl but not with each other? Which made me think, they invaded Singapore from Hong Kong or something, lol.

I think the mother gave her blessing because the girl proved she could sacrifice and suffer. I thought the mother was right, actually, about Americans being about personal happiness. I had this work friend, whose MIL would say ‘come for dinner’... and not set a place for her, only her son and grandchildren. Yeah, I wouldn’t put up with that!

My friend, btw, would slam SF Chinese because she was Northern and all old time SF Chinese are Cantonese. On the other hand, she had our number about the wadded up wet washcloths all over the place... hahaha! This is why I can’t share a hotel room with Mother.

Asian reporting for duty. No interest in the book. Minimal interest in the movie. Saw it more to financially support the movie for future Asian led movies or even better, raceless, classless, genderless casting.

Enjoyed it more than predicted but less an Asian movie than a rich people movie. Awkwafina was the bomb.

The following is secondhand info so take with a grain of salt. Apparently the dumpling scene suggested that the grandma is from northern China and the mother was from the south so there is that geographical tension. The mahjong scene had the female lead and the mother speaking hokkien, a southern Chinese dialect adding a layer of nuance and irony to their conflict.

Why do you think the mother finally gave her blessing and her ring?

A number of my friends (Asian and non-Asian) have seen it and enjoyed it. I’ll wait until it is out of the theaters and on Netflix, since I tend to save theater trips for movies that my husband and I both want to see, and I don’t really see him being interested in this. ;-)

Interesting story, Anna. Thanks for sharing

While I am all in favor of movies that feature all woman or all minority leads, I just can't get interested in the subject matter of this one.
But then again, most movies just don't interest me enough to sit still that long, so there's that LOL

Book is better than the film; all three in series are beach reads. Due to the many characters and story lines which were simplified for the film, I think the soapy story would have worked better as a tv series. Worth seeing; Awkwafina as Goh Peik Lin steals the show. I loved her style.

You’re not alone, lisap. I downloaded the book and then couldn’t be bothered. Gaudy spoiled rich people aren’t that interesting. My bff only got halfway thru and my mum is boycotting the movie because she DID read the whole book. Lolol.

That said, my bff and I went to see it. We were thinking we’d be cultural misfits in a sea of other Asians, but it turned out to be a broad spectrum audience... and then we got mansplained by this chick re racism and 1980s London... which was hilarious since a) she wasn’t even born then and b) unbeknownst to her, she was lecturing two brats whose school boasts Prince Andrew as a patron (not that this is that rarefied).

Anyways, the movie IMO was a real movie. A nice standard Cinderella romcom. Didn’t expect that. Was expecting something self-conscious, like Joy Luck. Awkwafina ran away with the show, hands down.

My one thing about the movie, which made mansplaining chick even more cringe-y... uh, it was totally colonialist. It was about filthy rich Chinese people who were doing the colonialist oppressor thing in Singapore. Don’t know that’s progress.

Ya. I said it. Lol.

Lisa I heard an interview with the I think the author or director. Anyways it’s a big deal because it’s a big budget movie with an all Asian cast. He tried to shop it to all the major studios in Hollywood & none of them would take the chance on an all “minority” movie.
So he got funding elsewhere & now it’s a big hit. Almost all my Asian friends have seen it or want to see it.
And I want to see it, as a white chick.

I seem to be the odd person out with regards to this movie. I have absolutely zero interest in it, and never read the book either. I am curious about my response to this, and can't really pin it down. The cultural portrayal is maybe not of interest? And seeing people spend $$$ on the latest trends makes me uncomfortable at best. I might be missing a humour gene when it comes to this sort of story.

Since no one else has started this thread yet...

Who has seen the movie? Comments? Favourite outfits? Favourite characters?

M. Abeille and I saw it the first Friday it was out locally. The theatre was sold out, and we sat in the very front row at the very end. So I would be up for watching it again without distorted faces and bodies! Pretty sure everything Astrid wore would end up as my favourite though.
