Mander, I sort of half heartedly started taking pics of single items intending to catalog everything over at Closet Couture. I hung them up, though, and found that didn't portray the item very well so I stopped.
In theory I think it's an awesome idea but getting it actually done sounds daunting. Taking daily WIW pics and then maybe cropping them so you see only the top or only the bottom might be more realistic?

@AJ: I just think it could be interesting to get a perspective on each item on its own, rather than as part of an outfit. And I also fantasize about my very own personal Polyvore-type closet inventory...

Perhaps I will go ahead and order that remote for my fancy camera and get to work!

I think it's a worthwhile effort over time. You'll probably keep up your enthusiasm for the project AND get better feedback if you only take a few photos at a time and post about them. If you have a tripod and remote for your camera that will make things a lot easier too.

I think it would be tough to do it all at once, but I guess if you have the time and inclination, why not? I do think you need to weigh ALL the evidence, photographic, mirror, and how it feels on you. No one method is the standard on its own.

Transcona Shannon is doing a day by day photo evaluation for the season, deciding what to keep and what to purge on that basis. It's been very enlightening. In fact, most of what she kept and didn't purge in her first purging round is actually excellent!

@Makrame - If I'm in doubt about something then I trust the camera more than the mirror. There are times when I luv an item and I don't care what the camera tells me. : )

I agree with AJ - it is easier to find a good location in your house where you can snap a quick picture of what you wear, and just keep taking pictures. It takes forever to do a "photosession" with multiple clothes changes.

Why not just take WIW photos and assess daily instead of an epic session of everything in your closet?

Sounds like a great idea. It also brings up a question I have always had (and I think it has been discussed here from time to time). Sometimes clothes look very different in photographs than in the mirror, and the question is - which do you trust more?

I recently have ben trying to photograph every outfit I wear, just so that I can tell what works. I discovered that some things I thought were great, were actually pretty bad (like the bootcut dress pants that I was constantly wearing that can be observed to wrinkle and gather at the crotch in photos). I am considering donating them but I still have a nagging doubt in my mind since they seem to look pretty good in the mirror.

I have never done this. I think seeing photographs of an item can be very enlightening and helpful, but I also know that some items and colors just don't photograph well, even though they may be great in person. Also, unless you have a very good or great camera with great light, colors are often not accurately represented. This might influence how you see your lipstick. What I like to do when I am thinking of purchasing a lipstick is try it on at the store and then wear it around for a few hours, checking to see how it looks in different light (because it does change). If I like how it looks the majority of the time, I will buy it.

Brilliant idea - quite time consuming though, I would think.

I've found several times that I have taken a photo of something I'm thinking of purging, and not even had to post it here for comments, as looking at the photo is enough!

Sounds like a great idea! It does help to have someone else's perspective on things. This has been on my "to do" list for this year too. I haven't started yet.

I'm pondering taking on the epic task of photographing myself wearing every single thing in my closet, and maybe all of my lipstick colors, too. Many people here have been amazed at how different outfits look in the camera versus the mirror. Perhaps I need a different perspective, too.

I noticed in my graduation photos that the lip gloss I was wearing, and which I wear all the time, is way too pink for me. My sister described one of my new-ish shirts as "awful", and insisted that I wear a skirt that I always feel frumptastic in because she thought it looked really good on me. Then there are the things that my husband thinks are cute but which seem ugly to me, or vice versa. Since I still haven't finished my closet purge and remodel project, it could be a good way to speed up the purging process and help remove some of the weird guilt attached to certain clothes if I could see them a bit more objectively.

Has anyone ever managed to do this? How long did it take you?
