I find that most infinity scarves are too big and bulky for my short neck and stature and just don't look particularly good ON ME. I prefer to tie opposite corners of rectangular scarves and make them into infinity scarves -- less bulk, and I can have them sit lower in front while still keeping the back of my neck warm. Cowls often don't hit me right, usually hanging too low. I think they're classic like turtlenecks: Some years you find more of them than others.

Diana , I will not achieve your knit- tasticness but I did wonder if I might be motivated to learn to knit a loop! The appeal of being able to choose your own yummy yarn.
Alasse, love that neckline!

Unfrumped, this is my go-to sweater neckline. I think you have a place for infinity scarves/snoods, since they serve exactly the same function but offer a bit more flexibility. I've found cowl necks at Dress Barn this year, as well as a faux-cowl (infinity scarf) sweater dress at JCPenney.

I like all scarves as long as they are big! Since I knit, I have pretty much every style of scarf on earth. ;). The small and skinny ones are always the ones that get orphaned. And by the way I have a short neck and short torso. I still like gigantic scarves. Easy, chic, and warm. I find small scarves fussy, fussy, fussy.

love cowl necks too. For me, I have to be careful that they aren't too long but I love the look of a properly proportioned one.

Eta: I find a cowl scarf like the one pictured below to be easier to wear than a true infinity, because you just pop it over your head and you don't have to adjust the length or loop it or anything. , but I'm not sure they're really commercially available? They're very popular for handknitting.

I'm with you, cowls are a standard classic neckline; the cowl itself changes a little, as do all classics, of course. They are wonderful on some people and if you love them I vote wear them! If you're really concerned about trendiness, pair with your culottes or paper-bag waist pants (or something else considered more "trendy") and you're set. As for me, I prefer the infinity scarf to an actual cowled top for myself. I have proper infinity scarves (you know, fabric stitched into the loop) which I love wearing; and I almost always tie my rectangular scarves into infinity style since I don't really like having ends hanging down (square scarves get to be mufflers!). So.. sugar eye for infinity style checking in. I'll enjoy my droopy chest and if you like the style, so should you

As grownups, we've learned what style elements work for our bodies, lifestyles and personas. For me, wide leg pants are always a do, as are pencil skirts. Jewel tones flatter, and art deco and art nouveau prints make me really happy. Now, I'll adjust these preferences over time. For example, I wear less black than I once did because it's too harsh for my skin tone now, but I will buy freely when these items are available. I think there are ways to update items that may not be the "hot item" at the moment. And feeling great in what your wearing is a bit part of style!

Unfrumped, I love your humour.

Here is how to wear the infinity scarf with infinite style (I learned from watching trendy students do it):
You wear your coat which has a hoodie.
(If you live in Canada, any coat you own has a hoodie).
You button up /zip up your coat.
(If you are in Canada, you always zip up your coat before you go out).
You raise the hoodie over your head.
You then slip on the infinity scarf, cross it over once.

Your infinity scarf sits around you neck, over the hoodie's lower part, two loops. It's not hanging low in front of you, it's bulky around your neck.

Then you lower the hoodie.

You have REALLY thought this through! Which means if you think you have a place for a snood, then wear a snood. I'll admit I prefer them peeking out from jackets and coats, but you raise a good point the role they could play in your wardrobe. By the way, did you know that the piece of skin protruding from a turkey's forehead is called a snood? I just learned this seasonal fact today. I like your teal snood much better!

This year, it seems like blanket scarves are the hot item because I see them everywhere. But I still see a few infinity scarves and plan on continuing to wear mine. I bought one from Everlane at the start of the season (below) and love it because it goes with everyone, and I also have a few hand knits that will come out when the weather is colder.

I know, I'm being a little tongue-in-cheek and referencing some other "do's and don'ts" bloggers or folks with "narrow style filters" as Angie might say, and possibly myself, because for awhile they were a trend that then became ubiquitous and in my "neck of the woods" (!) they are all too easy to find in not-so-great fabrics ( as is true of all scarves!)..

But also you are making me feel better and more grounded. I think each accessory should be judged on its own merits for appearance and quality, and after being sort of a scarf-aholic who tends to buy scarves impulsively based on love of colors and great wools or silks, and then either have too many or have trouble wearing them IRL, I've come to appreciate neckwear with user-friendly properties.

For example, I've not been able to find sweaters recently in the right shade of teal that I love and have had before, just to add some change to all the berry colors. But this infinity scarf, below, might be it.

I think I didn't get the memo about dreaded infinity scarves. I thought they were a widely-accepted accessory. I have a leopard-print one that works very nicely with some of my tops and sweaters.

Um... guess I'm late to the party, but why the "dreaded infinity scarf" qualifier? I have a pixie cut, my neck gets cold = I wear scarves of all types in fall, winter, and spring, be they long and rectangular, infinity loops, or cowls. (Just got a faux-fur lined cowl that's a chunky knit on the outside and I love it.)

How do "we" feel about cowl neck sweaters, infinity scarves, neck snoods and loops?

I explain:
I like the look of certain cowl neck sweaters on me due to both my long neck and to the effect of the cowl being sort of, something extra. An almost HEWI is a cowl that doesn't open too low with a lot of exposure and require a cami, because then it sort of no longer looks like a cowl neck, but has the cami thing going on as the center of attention.

This fall I found not one but 3 cowl-neck sweaters that come up high (not choking high on neck, but just how it falls at the neckline)--mauvy blush, burgundy, and a marled charcoal. Yay. Added to an existing gray one.

Later I read a snooty (my bias) blog about "cowls are out--who needs droopy chest". Bucking up, I say, no, they're one of the classic necklines.

But here's the rub: Cowl necks to me are seasonal and more for cool weather. So it's not good to have too many on the go. I like my assortment, in different knits, so can be early fall to late spring.
But by buying a cowl neck sweater I have to tick so many boxes, neckline plus am limited to the properties of the sweater (length, fit, boxiness, as well as warmth factor, etc) as to what I wear it with. Yet I don't want lots of them, such as, long gray cowl neck, short boxy gray, long burgundy, etc.

Enter the scarf, of course. With a scarf, you can wear some neutral round-neck knitwear underneath, but wear "face color" or coordinating accent color in scarf. Except, a typical long rectangular scarf is a lot of scarf even looped inventively, and looks different from the amount of drape of a cowl neck. Or the corners have to be pinned together, or something.

Enter the snood (for neck, not head), or the dreaded infinity scarf. They sometimes "behave" as less bulky and lie higher up.
To a large extent, a shorter, smaller "loop" works best for workwear because it is an accessory, like a necklace, but not too fussy or fly-away the way a scarf can sometimes be.

I have already "collected" scarves that are smaller, or narrower, and in soft fabrications (tissue wool, for example) to be less overwhelming.

But I was wondering if I have been fashion-shamed into avoiding infinity scarves or loops as "fake scarves" when in fact I could possibly have an assortment in selected colors (and carefully chosen fabrications--still aiming for certain woolen woven or knit and other natural fibers, and not poly types) that extend my "cowl wardrobe" by combining them with different tops that have already been proved out for proportions with specific bottoms and get more wear out of tops.

Wherefore then lies the Fabber poison eye and sugar eye for such neckwear? For me I think it would still be very item-specific as I would have a "poison eye" for certain ones, but others appeal. That is already true for "real scarves", though.
