Shannon,
It sounds like you have it all sorted out! I really couldn't offer any advice as I am also (like Deborah) not a cowboy boot wearer. I am looking for short nude boots but am thinking of either a bootie or an engineer style.

Taking cowboy boots off the list for now - just ordered a Lands End puffer coat instead. Far more practical and necessary where I live! Plus it's one of the items on my fall/winter "need" list.

They definitely fit the "retro" part of your rubric, and (to some extent) the "rugged" although they're rugged rural vs. rugged urban, LOL.

I think cowboy boots are a sort of classic, as well. They are not for everyone and aren't necessarily "in" style at various times, although every now and again they trend strongly. But they never completely go OUT of style, either.

You have all provided such excellent points and given me much to think about - now I'm wondering if the million dollar question is "are cowboy boots still part of my style persona"?

Shannon, I think with your old boots, in addition to the pointy toe, the little V at the top was also flattering and leg lengthening. This is one reason I think cowboy boots can be so wearable to those whose style persona suits them.

Shannon I'm sorry about your boots as I know you have really enjoyed them:). I will refrain from commenting further as unfortunately i don't share your love of cowboy boots;). I do like the Fryes you linked to. They look rugged, great color and I could seeing those filling the hole left by the cowboy boots.

I developed a strange craving for cowboy boots last winter and got a pair off eBay that sat unworn for a few months, but have recently become one of my favourite pairs of shoes. So I'd say start keeping an eye out for the right pair!

I had tall cowboy boots but got rid of them. I found that they just do not fit my style persona. I have the carson shorties but I only wear them with the toes sticking out under bootcuts so they are really not visible.

I've been on the hunt for the right boots for a while, so I'd say look now.

I had Fryes like the ones you posted a long time ago and got rid of them because they were just too stiff at that height for me. They are classic, but I found the straight-up-and-down fit hard to style and not that comfy.

If you are sure you need cowboy boots you can start looking now but if you think you may need something else and you budget is limiting why not wait a couple of months to see what a new season brings...

I have a pair of well-loved Luccheses that look a lot like the second pair you posted, but in a darker tan, and if something happened to them, I would panic until I found a replacement! And I think we all know that my boot collection is, um, more than adequate. But those cowboy boots fill such an important hole in my wardrobe, they have become one of my must-have items.

It sounds like you have worn yours a lot too and will miss them. I recommend a high-quality replacement! Hard to go wrong with Fryes, and take a look at Lucchese too.

I found a better pair I think that are almost exactly like my poor old boots and are traditional pointy toed cowboy boots http://www.amazon.com/Laredo-W.....8;sr=8-111

I do agree with you Lulu that you can't beat the traditional styling for comfort.

Dianthus - I hear what you're saying but strangely enough to me, cowboy boots don't necessarily need to be worn/purchased during boot season. I actually used to wear mine with summer dresses.

I have a large and varied collection of cowboys boots, some similar in style to your taupe boots-- condolences btw i do have a pair of the calvary that you are considering. They are somewhat clunky (?) and i do not find them nearly as comfortable as the more traditional pointy-toed boots (i have a few pair of frye in the pointy style and love them). It could be that i just haven't worn them enough to break them in, but their heavy clunkiness is what prevents me from doing just that.

As for your question of "needing" a replacement in a cowboy style, i would only say that they are timeless, and classic, and if you enjoy them they are never really in or out of vogue in my mind. I think the riding boots are trendy right now, and again always a fashionable style, but wonder if they will seem "dated" in the near future when the trendiness wears off?

My thrifted taupe cowboy boots have finally died (http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-for-velma). The heel has come apart from the boot on the left foot and one of the seams on the right leg has come apart to the point where it's actually scratching the skin off my calf. They aren't worth replacing as I thrifted them two years ago for about $10.

I really like the strange edge cowboy boots can bring to a dress or skirt and of course, they're fab for tucking skinnies into. And they're crazy comfortable.

For boots, I have my black Doc Marcie's and my taupe-greenish Clarks (which I've only worn once because it turned hot after I got them but will wear once fall comes around), plus my blue Aerosole suede booties.

My question to you all is, is it worthwhile replacing my cowboy boots with something similar in colour and ruggedness, or am I fine for boots? I know come fall, I'll be looking for black flat riding-type boots so that's something to consider.

This pair of Frye's caught my eye as a possible cowboy boot replacement...http://www.amazon.com/FRYE-Wom.....38;sr=8-16
