Sal, I do so relate to that dilemma. DH had started calling me a hypochondriac because for months I was testing on little things that I get frequently anyway, as a hayfever sufferer, and frequent headache person. I felt vindicated this time!
We are now a Covid free household, with 2/5 of us still to get it. And I am finally catching up with my mum in a small way tonight.

I get it re teenagers too. DD16 had her school Ball (masked ish) the day before our first isolation and I was glad she did not miss out.

The Rapid Tests do seem erratic. We have tested a few times and every time has been negative.

I was convinced my son had it but after two negative tests he recovered after a day being sick and was fine - do you keep a 17 year old home anyway (other household members negative and no symptoms)? Esp when he is prone to respiratory infections/allergies. I don't know the answer.

We have been to two funerals that feel like high risk events and one indoor party. It's a challenging time as my 17 year old wants to enjoy all the fun that comes along with being in his last year of school so we become a higher risk household.

Stag, I am fine, though not yet as fit to exercise as I was prior . Another daughter in isolation now, which does affect us a bit (no guests) She's fine too. She took a while to test positive so is missing heaps of school, sport, band and friends.

Suntiger, we were super strict here, but also now back to normal in terms of big events. Still some areas of mask mandate, like public transport and in health facilities.

Khards we have lots of free tests here too, although I have suspicions about the efficacy of the last free ones were given (DD was symptomatic for three days but negative. Day four tested positive on pcr)

Oh no! The cases are going back up here too, but no mask requirements, and all the big summer events are back on. On one hand it feels reckless, but on the other, it's nice to do things again!

Gail - sorry to hear about your experience - and yes it does differ widely.

Jenni - of course you must be so affected by it at work! Sounds like you can do telephone consults. Having them is one silver lining of the pandemic for me - for routine things like regular blood tests and scripts.

Thanks for that article Anne. That article was copied into our news also, I read that on the NZ Herald. Glad you are out of isolation! I feel more affected than ever at work because I am notified of cases every day that I go to work ( which is 3 long days a week). And there are too many cases to look after so we just have to send texts mainly saying call us if you need us. I am still masking out and about, it makes me feel safer. Many people still are, here.

I've had it and it seems like everyone I know has had it , including my brother who is immunocompromised living in the UK and my Father in law who is on hospice. They both felt unwell for 2 days and then had some lingering fatigue. Other people I know who are much younger, super fit and healthy had a very bad experience , so weird.

Ok - that worked. Cardiff girl I'm sorry to hear about the loss of the financial aid in the UK, and the corresponding problems.

Bijou I found that my kids classes were really disrupted in term 1, mostly because of the close contact rules at that point meant that anyone with a sibling was out of school - and it was going strong in the younger years at school. Sometimes 10 out of a class in a day. But my (high school) kids didn't get it because their friends who got it were already in quarantine

Janet yes it's that personal feeling, definitely.

And in national news...

https://www.abc.net.au/news/20...../101062364

It seems cases are creeping up here in the states, and they’re increasingly hitting closer to home, personally. My other stepson has now had it, and this weekend one of my best friends (who I spent the weekend with a week before) and his partner now both have it. He’s been feeling like crap for a couple of days now, so I’m hoping he fully recovers quickly.

My husband and I are now being a bit more careful again. I’ve been lax with masking in public but I’m rethinking that! And it’s time for another booster shot.

Anne, absolutely! At my son’s school 20% of the teens in his home room were away last week. We are yet to catch it but it now feels like an question of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ we will catch it. In my extended family, many have had it and recovered. I am avoiding large indoor gatherings and going to restaurants, but in the main, keeping to my usual routines and hoping we are all OK. I have not ditched my mask and happily wear it when shopping or being around people where social distancing is not possible.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Rachylou, yep it’s no longer a legal requirement to isolate if you test positive ,and l can personally say that l have met people who have told me that they are symptomatic out walking. Also all financial aide has been removed from people so those who cannot afford to isolate because they won’t get paid have to make the choice.Having said that a lot of people still try and do the right thing but it’s not easy if you feel pressured because it’s now being treated as “just a cold”.

Almost everyone l know has had covid in the past few months probably because as far as the uk government’s concerned covid is over.l haven’t had it yet although thoroughly expect to get it as it will be impossible to avoid as virtually no one is wearing a mask and people no longer have to isolate if they catch it.Unfortunately some people seem to be catching it more than once as well.Fine if you have mild symptoms, not so good if you are unwell.l hope that you make a full and quick recovery.

Khards - yes this does sound similar - in fact it's been like that at work for a couple of months now - but the numbers are really ramping up statewide in the last few months. I don't think we had a big rise over Easter, etc but that's possibly because a lot of the transmission before then had been at schools, and that would have been broken - or else because people weren't testing because they wanted to go away (lots of casual speculation in the office on that last point) . That was the week my daughter caught it and 10000 cases a day seemed a lot at the time.

Sounds like your mum is ok now?

RoseandJoan - it is interesting the contrast isn't it. One state of Australia, Victoria had the absolute strictest of pandemic restrictions - and the worst number of cases. They are also known for having the worst weather - maybe Scotland has that in common.

Sorry to hear the numbers are high were you are Anne, it's very strange in the UK at present, the Covid numbers and no longer broadcast and the restrictions have been lifted. It feels like there's an effort to pretend things are normal.

The mask mandate is a strange one, Scotland retained their mask mandate for quite a few weeks after England lifted theirs and yet the transmission figures were higher in Scotland.

Zaobi that sounds absolutely awful! I'd read about mainland China's approach - and HKs sounds very similar in terms of shipping off the positive.. Are you having the same strict lockdowns too?

I'm sorry to hear that, Anne - Australia was doing so well as well! If it's any consolation, both my parents caught COVID but are generally doing better after 8 days (my mother has asthma but doesn't feel much except for some leftover tiredness still)

Here our numbers are dropping, but tbh that may be due to underreporting... whilst the government has distributed free test kits & opened up free community testing centres, if testing positive means that you have to be shipped off to a government facility until you recover (they've literally erected shipping containers as makeshift overflow quarantine centres until you start testing negative again - which could take weeks!), then I don't think people will be jumping to report their positive results to the government in the first place lol...

Anyway enough about HK - here's hoping you all recover soon & that your variations are mild!

Peri, such a difficult situation with your husband. And you have had this for so much longer. Until this year we never had a mask mandate more than two weeks long, because our brief lockdowns cut off community transmission. But someone in the extended family is high risk and their immediate family tried to keep them isolated for over a month. Having to do that for years is really hard.
On the mask thing, I think people over here would avoid mask wearers because it's a requirement here to wear one if you are a close contact, so you are more likely to be a danger to them (others can wear them too of course, but West Australians are very compliant if they have to be, and pretty quick on removing masks if they don't have to be)

I've been living in the state of "spouse with cancer and no immunity" isolation but we are around people more now as he's improved and it's a difficult adjustment. I'm sorry you and your area have been hit. This is definitely a situation where it's not great to join the rest of the world.

I'm struggling with the mask wearing reduction also, and I think the mild cases almost make that worse. People go around assuming they aren't sick because the symptoms are mild and meanwhile they are spreading it further without knowing...or maybe without caring cause "hey, everyone's going to get it, who cares, it's nothing." My only reasonable wish now is that if people see someone wearing a mask they have enough kindness and brains to assume there is a reason and keep a respectful distance. Reasonable yes? Apparently too hard for a lot of people. Kindness and brains are sometimes in short supply.

This is all so wearying and I'm sorry your nice hermit kingdom is now dealing with it too.

That's interesting Kathie. I have not been keeping up with the USA covid news recently. Some here do have it worse than a cold- there's lots of variation.

Glad you haven't been hit too hard! We're seeing the same- lots of friends have it (all vaccinated) but very mild, not even as bad as a cold, so the isolation is the only troublesome part.

Sal and Jenni - yes I had a relative visiting over Easter from NZ and her experience is similar to yours.

Janet - I haven't been careful to the extent you have been, because for me the risk/ benefit wasn't there - I understand it is for others) but my MIL caught it recently when the only places out of the house the preceding week were the Dr and the chemist (both masked). Happily hers was very mild and only picked up because of routine testing.

Definitely the same here Anne. Rest up!!

We have had it hit our workplace in April, with the youngest fittest person (sub 20 minute 5km, non drinker) being hit the hardest. The 60 year olds were much less sick. All fully vaccinated luckily.

Hope you get better soon Anne. It is the same here in NZ. One of my staff has just had it ( our practice nurse) and two of my husband’s workmates, but we have managed in our two households next door to each other, 7 of us including baby, to not have it yet. We keep expecting we may do…

Sorry you’re dealing with that, after all this time when it seems like things should be getting better! My stepson and his wife just had it recently, after two years of being careful. It knocked them low for a few days but they recovered well.

I went to a friend’s 60th bday celebration last weekend and it’s the most significant indoor gathering I’ve been to in many, many months. A handful of people were wearing masks but most were not. Hoping we all stay ok! I fully intend to keep up with boosters.
