Anna, is it a dress, coat, jacket, trousers, skirt?

Alterations are *always* worth investigating with sentimental and hard to replace pieces. Then way up the cost of the alteration - and a realistic expectation that alterations can be disappointing - with how much you love the piece.

Make sense?

Great story. Do you still love it as in would you still feel great wearing it or is it the memories associated with the piece? If the first get it altered if the second keep it for the memories.

Vicki's post about going to Budapest reminded me of a sentimental closet item.
My own and only piece of couture is a iridescent sleeveless silk top and long skirt from this Hungarian designer.

http://vasseva.com/

I was visiting Budapest with a friend about six years ago. I read about the shop in a guide book. Her stuff was beautiful and she was even having a sale when I visited her studio. Nothing fit me though. I was about 12-14 at time. She offered to make me an outfit and quoted me a price. It was reasonable given what was offered and the dollar was bit stronger. I had to go through to two fittings. By the way fittings are tiring. You have to stand for a long period of time while they measure and pin.
The outfit was beautiful. All the seams are bound with fabric. I only wore it once to see La Boheme at the Sydney Opera House. Now it sits wrapped in tissue paper on the top shelf of my closet.
Should I investigate getting it altered?
