Good report, thank you!

I’m not tracking but still am aware of so many Sweaters I only wear once or twice. This is even after I’ve gone through several culling sessions over a couple of years.
So I’ve been wearing Uniqlo Heattech fleece tops, plus a fleece over shirt, and lined sweatpants or similar at home a lot on cold days and often won’t change just for a grocery run. I have a few other things I wear at home but my several new Uniqlo items have emerged as favorites. The black fleece- lined sweats I actually like to wear out of the house and may tuck in a top , add jacket , wear boots. I’m struggling with whether to cull some older comfy items vs. keep in a Hold zone for awhile - for me it’s that some of them aren’t showing up at retail anymore or in new improved versions. I tend to like inherently warm pants more than wearing a tighter fitting underlayer under jeans or thinner pants.
Anyway, point is I’ve found I am happy with about 3 versions- mostly shifting color schemes for variety.
One goal is to wear some of my cashmere sweaters more at home— especially on cold rainy days when I’m not likely to do random things outdoors or even in the potting shed. I was not saving for “ best”, but apparently even “ better” occasions weren’t frequent enough, and yet several seem to work well with my sweats/ joggers at home. So it’s mostly habit, that I think I could remedy by making a wear- this -instead of that plan. That also would disclose whether there are fit or comfort issues that have crept in.

sabimct, I use a spreadsheet. I used spreadsheets a lot in my career and still use them now. Geeky is one of my personas and I love doing things by the numbers :-) It does require updating the spreadsheet every day or so but I have plenty of other stuff I do at my laptop daily so it's no biggie for me.

This is very interesting to me!

It connects to a previous conversation about 'wardrobe mistakes.' When I make a mistake, it really bothers me! [Though I know, life happens!]

May I ask the details of *how* you are tracking? A spreadsheet?
My first thought was to keep a tag on the hanger and mark it every time it gets worn? Pretty old school!

In the past, when my weight has crept up a tiny bit, I have tracked my calories in order to get things back on track. I found it an incredibly effective way to be more mindful about what I am eating. I think that tracking how much I wear each item would do the same?

Thanks for sharing everyone!

No Angie you were not dreaming! Not about that anyway :-). I do not think of my hair color as "new" ... but it is fairly new for me to
want to wear such a minimalist/solid vibe. Maybe it has more to do with what things I found to buy for this winter ... not a whole log. Like you say, follow your emotions and carry on!

Interesting Joy. My winter has been warmer and less snowy than usual, but not dramatically so. We're getting all our snow in this past week and maybe next week but March is often like that. Oh well, spring is not far off!

We have had a very cold, snowy winter. I really wore heavy pants and layered sweaters a lot. What I did not wear and expected to was black corduroy pants. My velvet pieces got lots of wear. So did wool socks. I change out items each month or so. December was heavy on red and greens all month. January was mostly dark neutrals, I have added more white and color for February. March I have tried to add more spring touches but revert back to warm layers. Especially warm layers in pastels and colors. The velvet is still worn. I added some puffy vests and flannel shirts. The vests get some wear but not 30. Th flannel shirts were a mistake for winter. Maybe they will feel warm enough for spring or even summer.

Interesting comments Star!

Suz, my initial answer to your thoughts about my at-home dressing is "i just don't care that much about it", but you've given me a lot to think about. Your thoughts Star are useful too. Thanks for the push, and I can easily start tracking wears of things I wear at home in any case ... it should give me useful info. I already know that I was smart to buy a half-dozen uniqlo fleece mockneck underlayers a few years ago. I've bought other necklines and will definitely refresh when they get worn out but they last forever!

Rachy I know what you mean. Between the 'dog hair" look, the overly pilled and don't feel like de-pilling, and the super classic ones I'm tired of looking at I do have a large collection. I've been somewhat switching over to lightweight fleece tops, like the 1/4 zip ones below. They are much less work to take care of, but they tend to read "apres-ski" or "winter jogging outfit" and although that is a style I like and see all around me in winter, sometimes I want something a little dressier. (For those who are interested, both Eddie Bauer and Lands End carry lots of different prints in this type of top.)

The topic of sweaters resonates with me. I’ve kinda put sweaters on hold. The quality issues. The I have a dog and am tired of trying to get fur off issue. The crop length or not issue. And I have plenty of them to think about…

I was responding, I think, to earlier posts in which you expressed dissatisfaction with your wardrobe. I'm wondering if the clothes in general are the problem, or if the clothes you are wearing at home are the problem -- if most of. your life is spent at home.

Suz I also count my everyday wear even if not going anywhere other than for a walk because that is my life. I have loungewear I wear at night in winter usually with demoted tops (demoted for various reasons) and I don't count those. My winter daily clothes are jeans and knits, nothing spectacular but need to be in a reasonable condition for me to feel okay. I am quite a RATE dresser so I don't worry too much about knits that are a bit pilled for these days. If I was going in to an office or similar I would be more fussy. That is why 2nd hand clothing can work for me. I try to buy items that are only in a very good condition but sometimes something a little RATE slips through and I don't mind so much because of my lifestyle. Even though my clothing choice is simple I do dress in clothes I feel fab in everyday otherwise I too would get depressed. Also, like you, I dress for the day - no changing if I decide to go into the city, just shoes, so the clothes must be up to that. Chris I hope this is of interest to you, otherwise apologies for sort of being off topic, although maybe it is not entirely.

So, my follow up question, then, Chris -- are you happy dressing that way at home? Does it make you feel good?

I ask because my "WFH" is really work AT home, i.e. I'm rarely engaging in meetings (even Zoom meetings) and mostly sitting in a chair reading and writing and corresponding, then doing household tasks, vacuuming, prepping food, gardening, even shovelling. I go days on end without seeing anyone except Mr. Suz, my kid, and our cat. My lifestyle to most people would look like that of a retired person in the months I'm not classroom teaching. And I'm not classroom teaching now.

I don't dress to the level Angie would for this lifestyle. (She'd wear her gorgeous suits, I'm betting!) I might dress closer to that level if I lived in a more urban environment (I did, when I lived in Vancouver). But in my suburban mileau, it wouldn't make much sense -- I need more rugged boots for my walk, etc.

Even so, I wear the type and quality of clothes I would wear if I were going out. With some minor modifications, e.g. I'm unlikely to wear a blazer at home, unlikely to wear my dressier booties (and have at-home shoes for the house instead). I vary the coats -- if I'm walking here in the suburb, it's almost always my puffer, whereas if I go into town I will wear a wool coat. I sometimes add more accessories if going out. And of course if I am doing a truly dirty job (maybe gardening) I wear tougher items, often gear.

Anyway. That's my reason for counting at-home wears. My at-home life IS my life, pretty much, and I'm dressing for it! Why wouldn't those wears count?

To me it makes sense to count those wears for a few reasons.

1. Because I wear my clothes most here -- this is the stuff that is more likely to wear out!

2. I really want to feel good every day. Sure, on the occasional day I wear gear nonstop (usually if I have two outdoor adventures planned and don't feel like changing. But mostly I want to feel like myself, not less than myself. Yeah, my "uniform" is jeans and a sweater, most of the time. This used to frustrate me, but it is what it is -- this is my fall back style. But it can be a nicer sweater (with an apron) and the jeans I really like, not the ones I don't care for any more.

3. Because it gives me a clearer sense of what I actually need. (I need clothes that I feel good in when I'm working from home.

I want lots of "going out" clothes but, to your point, I don't, need a lot of variety there. I have certain repeated activities, e.g. lunch with friends, appointments, launches -- and need a few different options for each of those in various weather conditions, but I don't need a huge number of items.) I constantly remind myself that my needs are for items that work -- or also work -- at home.)

Phew. Sorry. This got long. Maybe it should be a new thread about under what circumstances people count. Sorry if I derailed. I hope at any rate it is food for thought. I will say that speaking for myself, I could not feel good about my style if I didn't consider what I wear at home to be an integral part of it. And I would get depressed over time if I didn't dress in the nicest way that is practicable for myself at home.

I had similar take-aways from counting wears in the depths of winter. Totally surprised that I reach mostly for neutral knits, black and taupe. I can really get on just fine with a small number of these. I also found I prefer more variety in outwear which I sorted this year.

Suntiger I was a bit surprised too I think I tend to wear darker colors in winter, lighter ones when it's warmer. I hear you my black-neutral-clothing loving twin. Sometimes I think we are in a real minority here with all the navy-clothing lovers but it's all good!

Suz, my winter isn't over yet either, I just decided 3 month chunks were easier to "digest". I don't track home clothes because I'm retired so it's rare that I'm "WFH", they are not that interesting, usualy super practical, often were demoted from "regular" wear, and I have a reasonable sized collection. Interestingly, my jeans wear patterns sound a lot like yours.

Jussie you are probably right that deep winter is "a terrible time for wardrobe variety" and least for some of us. You are spot on about the puffers! And when your activities involve things where you don't take that coat off (like shopping) the rest of the outfits except the footwear just disappears! (Well, to be fair, it does not work this way for Angie the bright color & bright coat lover.) Good question about spring. Looking forward to it in any case!

Angie I DO wear earth tones, so this was a bit of a surprise to me too. I think the earth-toned items are spread across all four seasons, I don't have all that many, and I have not reached for them much this winter. I do have a camel sweater that I wore a few times.

Julie very interesting comments about sweaters. I really like your idea of a small collection for winter that feels easier to manage. That's sort of what I've been doing, although mixed in are a whole lot of ones I do NOT reach for. I need to put a bunch aside or pass them on.

Sal, good suggestions and I definitely will not discard stuff quickly. I have good collections of classic cross body bags and cashmere pullovers that I'll keep, because they won't be easy to replace should I ever want them again.

Nodding along with you Tanya.

Roberta, RIGHT, sweaters with a C+ grade ... I know just what you mean!

Runcarla I am just like you, except that your idea of warm layers is nowhere near enough warmth for me. You clearly run warmer than I do and I'm envious! Great comment about learning where to spend the $$ to replace frequently worn items.

Jenni NZ I own exactly one winter dress which is currently a bit too tight and a bit too classic. No skirts. I might own more if I could find any tall boots that fit or low boots that I liked with a skirt but I'm tired of hunting. Summer is a little different, I do wear them occasionally.

Jessikams, I LOVE that idea about how shoppers make mistakes. I've been observing my own thoughts when I avoid a new item possibility because "it's too much like something I already have" when in fact if it's only subtly different it could be a great choice. Joining you in chewing ..

I hear you on the “getting out the door” dance! I get impatient with it too.

Interesting findings. I am also learning that I think I’m happier with fewer items that I like a lot— rather than more “variety” but including a lot of items that I don’t love. I think fewer items leads to better outfits too, maybe because I get to know each item well enough to experiment with it.

I recently heard in a fashion video that shoppers tend to make mistakes when we shop to add variety to our wardrobes. For example we will often buy similar items to what we already have, but maybe in a different color. However the resulting outfit will have the same “feel” as the ones we were already wearing. The tip was : shop for texture variety (nubbiness, sheen, etc) or silhouette variety, and that will have more impact. Food for thought! I have no idea how this would apply to your wardrobe, but I’m chewing it over with regard to mine.

Really interesting. I see that like me you haven’t been much of a dress or skirt person! I did wear some dresses over summer but mainly because I knew they were just lurking there in the wardrobe so I may as well try to use them! They are pretty and I did get compliments.
The whole tracking thing is partly why I realise my wardrobe is still too big. I can’t be bothered changing out bags either though my bronze one from 2019 is getting tired so I’m low-key looking for another.
Sounds like you might indeed manage with less variety.

In the colder months my main driver is warmth. This year flannel button downs and cotton or light merino sweaters are in heavy rotation. One cotton sweater I got in summer 2022 has already been passed on due to pilling and worn elbows, but it had been worn 37 times.

Totally agree with you about the struggle to find good sweaters.

The learning I appreciate the most from counting wears, is identifying the items that really do get worn the most, and when it comes time to updating or replacing - that’s where I’m going to invest my clothing $$ - either buying the best quality individual item, or possibly buying duplicates of an identical or similar garment so I can split wears and keep the thing for longer.

I am also tracking in a lazy way, and figured I'd sum up in April. But I note that I also have lots of sweaters and many of them grade a C or Cplus at best. 3/4 sleeves is the main issue, but some seem a bit baggy or itchy or one of the other 7 dwarves.

I also carry one bag almost all the time and appreciate it's ease and familiarity. But I feel sad about my other bags which I still love, even if they don't leave the house.

Your conclusions are similar to mine especially re winter. And our winter is not as cold as yours - but it is hard to get past jeans boots and a sweater with coats as needed!

I support keeping the same bag for a season and then swapping - I used to do that - and probably think I should again!

I think those lesser worn things can come into their own when you sense variety - I wouldn't discard quickly.

Interesting, thanks for sharing! It looks like there's a little group of us tracking this winter. I track certain categories much like you, and with some similar trends (I wear jeans and puffers a lot, but was surprised by how much I wore my wool coat).

I haven't been tracking gear and loungewear, except to note how many days I wear mostly just gear and loungewear: 23 since January 1. I mean, that did include a fair bit of sloppy dressing before classes started in January...

I love sweaters and feel like I wear them all the time, but have learned that my 5 cozy pullovers are about the right number. Plus they fit in one drawer. I like the simplicity of having just those 5, and feel like I appreciate each one more somehow, compared to when I had too many. I'm thinking I might need to slightly expand my lighter-weight sweaters for spring, though.

Looking forward to other reports!

Hmm it does seem a fair bit of stuff didn’t get worn much. But, I do wonder, is deep winter just a terrible time for wardrobe variety generally? I think in deep winter it’s really tough to get much variety going, because everything is dictated by needing to work with the puffers!
I wonder how much your tracking would change in spring, would you start wearing a lot of those less-worn sweaters?

I also started tracking in December and intend to report at the end of this month, when winter will (theoretically!) be over.

I'm surprised you did not track the clothes you wear at home. If I didn't track those, I'd have almost nothing to track since I'm working from home right now and go out rarely apart from hikes and bike rides etc.

I will say for now that I wore 5 pair of jeans and over this period, one came in at 18 wears, two pair had 10 wears each, and two pairs had 7 wears each.

I know a lot of you fabbers like to count how many times you wear things. I decided to do it to see what I can learn about my wardrobe. (I want my clothes to last and be useful, but I don't ever count how many wears I get for garments over their lifetime or cost per wear).

I did it for December, January, February. These are the three coldest months of deep winter for me. The items below have all been worn 3x or more. Not shown are holiday-specific pieces and items I wore 1 or 2 times, and not shown are the uniqlo and other underlayers I wear daily. These are all for outfits worn outside the house, I didn't track the at-home only stuff.

The Numbers

Pants/jeans: 6 jeans and 2 pants were worn 3x or more (one pair of jeans worn 11 times, another worn 8 times), and 8 more that I did not wear often.

Sweaters: 7 that I wore 3x or more, and 22 that I wore 2x or fewer mostly because they are boring, worn out, or otherwise no longer interest me, plus a few holiday specific ones.

Footwear: 4 “winter” boots worn many times plus 1 slightly dressier one. 4 more worn once

Bag: I’ve been using my pompom London black crossbody EVERY SINGLE DAY since it arrived the first week of December, mostly with the black/white patterned strap.

Outerwear: wore my three puffer coats most of the time, with a puffer jacket once or twice on warmer days. Wool overcoats worn hardly at all. No surprise there, the puffers are the warmest coats I have and they feel "right' for my super casual life.

No dresses or skirts.

Only one or two topper + top ensembles.

Conclusions

I was generally happy with what I was wearing when I stuck to these frequently-worn items. I have a feeling I'd like more variety but maybe it's not so important.

I have switched from swapping my bag out fairly often to using the same one for 3 months. It DOES simplify things! In winter the coat, hat, gloves, bag, car keys, winter boots thing (putting on when leaving the house, taking off when returning) does get old and using just one bag removes a step from the dance. I will see how I feel as we move into spring.

I would like more variety in deep winter outerwear so I need another puffer coat. I did try about a half-dozen camel colored ones but nothing worked. I was also looking for boots in that color but that didn't happen either.

I have a LOT of sweaters I’m not crazy about and a much smaller number of ones I like a lot. Out of balance. Seems to be a perpetual issue for the 3+ seasons where I wear sweaters. Between finding things that fit and finding reasonable quality with modest prices (I hate spending $$$ on sweaters because the quality is so unpredictable), not to mention items I LIKE, it seems to be an ongoing issue.

I think I'm not refreshing this area as much every year/season as I need to. Instead I tend to hold things a long time even after I'm tired of them.

I also discovered this year that I can't count on V-neck sweaters in winter because these days I do not like the look of indoor scarves or cotton turtleneck under layers and an open V-neck is not warm enough.

I wear jeans a LOT, and should either expand my selection or find some alternatives. Again, another perpetual issue.

I've been under-stocked here since I lost weight 2.5 years ago.

Colors: no surprises here: I prefer dark blue and black denim, black, grey, and a little bit of light blue and dark red in winter. I have some camel/tan items but didn't wear them much. I do seem to be in a minimal/solid frame of mind these days, sticking with mostly neutrals plus maybe one piece in a color, and not wearing much pattern at all. I do want to start adding lighter colors as the days get longer but still mostly neutral solids.

I think I need a much smaller wardrobe than I might have thought. I could probably have stuck to the pieces shown here, skipped the items I didn’t like, and maybe worn these out sooner, but would have liked my outfits better overall.
