I agree. Understatement does seem like the better word - better than minimalism or normcore.

Understatement is a great word for it! I've been using 'normcore' but that's actually much narrower than the larger trends I'm seeing, even though normcore may be part of it.

In some ways it reminds me of the early 90s, with the grunge influence and flannel and doc martens with loose dresses and overall a very functional vibe, not a lot of extraneous detail.

Kiwi - I like the idea of patterned and lacy shorts. That mixes things up.

Aida - You're right. What's new is more along the lines of tweaks. Like people catching up with their own selves.

Chic - That's the best quote. I've been thinking about gladiator sandals myself - they're kinda having a redux moment. They'll look great with culottes.

...And on that note, I edited the list to add Gingham. I don't know that it ever goes away, but it's being played up right now. I kinda a want a gingham clutch, except I don't carry purses.

As for understatement, I love minimalism when it is dramatic, but understatement isn't in my fashion vocabulary. My motto has always been a quip from an Oscar Wilde play: "If I am occasionally a little over-dressed, I make up for it by being always immensely over-educated."

My DH has me subscribed to about a dozen fashion magazines, so I see a lot ;) I'm noticing the same as you, Rachylou, except for the cricket sweaters (don't think I've seen one) and the culottes. I am looking for some cool and slightly unconventional culottes for my new knee-high sandals and haven't spotted any yet. For me, the high-waisted pants Aida mentions are welcome relief for my muffin top.

Totally over minimalism Although I suppose I'm never really More Is More, definitely the lower-case version. All of what you are describing sound like what I was seeing last spring. I haven't really taken a good look at anything new, but my notes of what I was interested in from this season's spring shows when they happened way back when are:

more black and white

70s glam galore

prints and print mixing

longer length tops

lots of sweatshirts/hoodies

vests worn as tops

more texture than normal

slouchy trousers with hems pushed up the calf

slouchy khakis

baggy basketball shorts (esp. in interesting, non-sporty materials)

high waisted pants (boo for me, maybe get to wear slouchy?)

Not sure if any of that has translated though. Feels like it rarely does *sigh*

Yes, understatement/minimalism is strong here too. I think understatement is actually a better term than minimalism as it is not about minimal spend nor making do with what you have, nor really a minimal number of items!!

Here funky shorts are a strong trend - patterned, lacy, often short but loose. I think they look awesome and are a refreshing change from denim cut offs.

And blue denim/chambray/double denim is popular too - shirt dresses, shirts, tunics etc...

Perusing Saks site. They're calling out understatement as a trend (I guess that would be like minimalism renamed), but it does seem distinctive to me and true. Everything on La Garconne seems "understated" to me. I was getting that feeling from some other sites too. I feel a strong undercurrent of understatement in everything, actually. All the shows, on the street. Even when things are bright and crazy, I feel there's a bit of holding back.

Anyways what have I noted so far?

Rose gold

Sporty luxe - particularly sneakers with dresses and footbed slides

Culottes (they seem to have picked up some steam)

The colour Poppy (that bright tart red) with light blue

Sleeveless jackets

The string bow and ruff (since Annagybe pointed it out, I've been seeing more versions)

Cricket sweaters

ETA: Gingham

Plus Understatement

I kinda feel sporty luxe is a part of understatement, and that understatement is a trend in that non-fad, long term sense. A real direction.

And even tho I've seen greens, pinks, and yellows... they don't feel like either trends or fads to me. Can't say why. If they're there, they're there...
