Agree about tightness but think they look good with untucked shirt. Yes, baggy but still good, to my eye. Arty!
I would wear with more refined shoes.

I want to try these pants too.
The front pleat makes me nervous though.
Thanks for showing us, Dashielle!

Wow! Thank you all for your feedback...lots of great ideas and what a mixture of likes and dislikes. I was really hesitant to post at all, especially pictures, because all the things I try to hide were on offer. I thought the culottes would look better with a tucked blouse, so as not to hide the details of the waist and pleats. Then I remembered I never tuck and have very few short tops that would get the proportions correct without tucking. I also tried body con tops/sweaters that I am not so comfortable wearing right now, because, unlike my big/drapey tops, they CAN tuck. The top in 3,4 and 5 is an orphan AllSaints in burgundy that finally can come out and play with my new burgundy boots, so YAY. It's a very loose knit, so can be semi tucked or not, as the transparency doesn't interrupt the lines as much.

Una - no, I haven't tried the Teddies but it sounds like I should. They do look great on you.
Traci - great analysis of the fit situation. I could order a larger size and try, but even these have a ton of extra room in the seat and hip, such that there's a weird creasing over the cheek that happens when I walk (or so I"ve been told). If I had a tailor that understood fashion, I might be inclined to see if there are alterations that don't completely redesign them, but get them to a more flattering state.
Suz - to be honest, the only reason I posted and didn't slink off after this try-on session was in case it helped anyone else make a decision on these, one way or the other. Would love to see them on you.
Gaylene - interesting analysis, I'm having trouble picturing the seam modification you describe, possibly because I know nothing about clothing construction. They have a lot of extra fabric mid-hip, which makes them baggy on the butt.

I haven't returned them yet, so will ruminate a little more on the options.

I agree with Gaylene and others who have expressed that it is not the leg width that is not working for you. The fit of these particular culottes seems off -- the rise? something I cannot put my finger on. I definitely think that you would be fabulous in the wide leg look with a better fitted garment.

Agreeing with Angie, Suz, and Traci --it's not the pleat or leg width that is throwing these off, but the shape of the crotch seam. It's actually a fairly common fit issue on women's pants; the curve of the crotch seam is too shallow and needs to be altered by taking in the front seam and, possibly, the back as well. It's an easy alteration IF there is at least an inch or so of ease in the mid-hip area. I'd check with a tailor before giving these up as hopeless. If you can fix that crotch seam, these culottes would look amazing on you!

I like the J.Crew wider silhouette, and echo what Traci and Suz said. They look tight on the midsection, and that's where I have the fit concern - not on the width of the leg.

What Traci said. I'm not convinced they are a complete no -- the size may not be right (or the cut won't work due to factors other than the fullness). For sure you can crop your old trousers and that works easily -- but it is partly because it doesn't change the silhouette to the same degree. These with the pleats are more like a skirt in their drape.

Here's something -- I'm debating on these for myself and your pics make me want to try them MORE, not less.

I'm not convinced that this level of volume is a complete no. I think THESE culottes do not fit you well in the belly or in the stride. Something is happening down the inside of the legs that throws off the whole line of the pants. I'm not sure which part of the cut of the pants causes this, but I've seen it before. I would keep trying other pairs of voluminous culottes and just chuck these up to not right for you. I think 3 could be smart, if the legs laid straight.

Would you consider trying a size up?

All that said, #4 does look fantastically amazing on you!

I was 100% down to try the glen plaids, because well, glen plaid. Brought home to style and came up completely empty-handed. I have some summer coulottes, but the volume in these seems too overwhelming for me, and too high waisted for my short waist, and too pooch-enhancing. I tried every style top in my closet because I sooo wanted them to work. I think I'm back to hacking my wide leg trousers (last pic). Sigh...pictures are heinous, but in the interest of transparency, I'm sharing anyway. these are lovely pants and I hope they find a good home!
