So it depend on whether you want the fit to be "boxy" and slide easily over the trousers, almost float over them, vs, just a fluid turtleneck fit, perhaps classic. The next size up was really bulky under the arms and through the tummy, and the length was just enough to cut across at my crotch, which is my widest point. I appreciate the analysis though! </p> <p>Claire, it is a single layer funnel neck, which is great! I do not like how the sweater wrinkles at the waist. I would go with a sweater without a band then. I have the same issue too and I don't mind it on a less bulky sweater, but my preference when the material is thicker is to have a "free fall" sort of fit. All of that material gathering at the waist is not flattering, IMO. I think it will look nicer if the band falls, rather than hugs you at the hip. I changed how I buy my bulky sweaters to that fit and I think it is more flattering. It sounds counterintuitive but I think that if the sweater falls, then you don't get that "bubble" or rouching above the hip line, from the band fitting snug at the hip line.
