Thank everyone. I felt it was a gesture towards a costume and that was enough!! Plus it did look quite nice.

The sparkly "skirt' was just a length of fabric tied around my waist..

Pulled the whole outfit together in a few minutes the night before.

I don't think it was visible in the pictures, but I did incorporate cynthiawalkersmiths idea of a jewellery bag.

Update
- so this is what I ended up wearing. Basically a cut down version of the original "treasure" idea - silver top, sparkly sequin material tied round as a skirt and lots of necklaces.

I wore silver strappy sandals too for most of the night, but had abandoned them by the time this photo was taken after I got home!

One young woman did go as a treasure chest and was amazing (her mum made the costume. She should have won the costume prize, but inexplicably didn't even come runner up or third.

PS there were some great alternative costume ideas - a "sail", baseball players from the US team called Pirates, an internet pirate and a whole group who went with a Peter Pan theme including the crocodile! Plus the lazy types who went in office wear and said they were "corporate pirates".

Could you source a big cardboard box and paint it up as a treasure chest? Holes for head and arms. And take it off as soon as it gets uncomfortable!

Thanks Joy, El Cee and wow, Cynthia.
I went to the fabric shop and have decided not to go on with this idea, for cost reasons. The cost of getting enough "jewels" and the fabric to do a decent job of it is too much for me. I'll go back to wearing clams and a puffy and striped shirt or something like that!
But thanks again for the suggestions - and if any of you have a pirate party etc feel free to use my idea - and Cynthia's great suggestions!

I lived in Louisiana for a while, and learned that mardi-gras is so much more than just purple, gold, and green beads. Google search for mardi-gras coins, Mardi gras coin necklaces, gold mardi-gras beads, etc. There's so much out there.

You could get some coin charms for jewelry making and make a big chunky statement necklace/bracelet. In that same vein, one of those belly dance belts with all the little jangly metal discs would be like coins.

And there's those toy coins they use to teach kids to count money. You could do a black or deep blue velvet wristlet pouch stuffed full of them, and another stuffed full of gems maybe.

Final note: super glue melts plastics, so it might have the same effect on synthfabrics. Cool glue gun might be the best option

Joy is right -- a low temp glue gun may be the way to go. I got one really cheap from Walmart (less than $5 US). The one I have is the SureBonder Cool Shot Super Low Temp Mini Glue Gun. It is small and very easy to use, but does require special low temp glue sticks (sold separately). Perhaps you can find something like this in a local craft store or "big box" store similar to our Walmart.

Your costume sounds like fun. You might ask about the glue gun at the fabric store. Those ladies might know. Glue guns seem popular to use to finish garments or attach ornaments on Project Runway. Do you have a cool glue gun?

My work party has a pirate theme. Instead of dressing as an actual pirate I have been thinking of going as "treasure ".
My plan is to buy some gold coloured fabric and fashion it into a rough sleeveless dress, tied at the waist with some silver sequined material I already own and glue on fake jewels or even coins if i can find them or make them.
Would love to hear your thoughts! I am going to look for fabric etc in an hour or so.

DH say a glue gun may melt synthetic fabric and I might have to use super glue. Anyone with experience with that!?
I am not the crafty type!
