I organize by color and type of item.

I do have 3 NYC apartment (Translation: very small) closets. The first one is a folding closet, for tops only, that I organize by color and weight of fabric. The second is for coats, jackets and outerwear - no color organization here. The third is a hanging closet that is quite deep so there is two rods, one behind the other. This one is organized by color and type of clothing. I have dresses, a couple suits and formal wear on the back rod and blouses, pants and jeans on the front rod.

I made it sound so organized, it is not really the case . I just came back from a two week out of town assignment. I'm in dire need of tidying up. I made a mess while packing

I don't have an organized cell in my body... I could never maintain such a task! Kudos to you though. Looks pretty, and much easier to wade through!

I was at Nordie's Rack yesterday and they had a lot of stuff sorted by color and it was awesome. Maybe that's where I got the idea, although I wasn't thinking about that when I was sorting!

I do by color.. I find it so much easier for me. I then further separate out long & short sleeves (cold/warm weather). I learned this trick at my local thrift store, and that's the only store that sorts by colors, and since discovery of that shop, i really don't like other places anymore. I wish department stores would do that too!

I'm really just biding my time until my son goes off to Marine Corps boot camp. The minute the door closes behind him, I'm taking over his room, most especially his closets! I have a design all figured out at http://www.easyclosets.com and I'm just waiting to pull the trigger! Gonna be awesome -- shelving for my shoes and purses, a valet bar, belt rack, you name it!

I also organize by color and then I have many sub-categories...I am a bit of a closet organization-nut!!

LOL, Marley! Great (or demented, as the case may be) minds think alike!

Better?

BTW, I also decided to do something about my necklaces. I mean to get a tie/belt holder as Angie recomments, but for now I just hung a hanger on the wall to get them out of the mess in my jewelry box and where I can see them. Big improvement!

I like to organize by color, but I don't mix in the pants with tops, I keep pants separate. However, I own mostly jeans, so it's just a big mass of blue for bottoms anyway. I might try this and see how it goes, right now, my blazers are all squished together it might help to have them mixed in.

Wow, great job.
I think I never did it that way, sometimes I put items together that might look nice, for example a shirt that might look good with a certain jacket but never every item by color.
I remember that a friend of mine did it some years ago and it was so beautiful to look at.
It's fun to play with your wardrobe, I guess it's a good thing for me to do in the winter months.

Whew. That's better!

Mo, that's pretty much how I've been doing it and I'm just kind of ready for a change, I guess. All the same things hanging next to each other was starting to get on my nerves, you know?

And BTW, it was an interesting exercise to actually take out each piece and handle it and look at it and decide whether it got to stay in the closet!

It's sure nice to look at! I don't think I could make the color only system work for me but I hope you like the change for yourself. When I worked a discount retail shop in HS we had a specific system and I think I somehow internalized it and use it still today. Never really thought about that until now. But it was first sleeve length, then collar, then solids by color (lightest to darkers) and then prints in each and every separate category. I'm not sure if weight of fabric played into the system or not, but I try and do that in my own closet.
Let us know how the color system works out!

Call me crazy, but last night I re-organized my closet totally by color!

I've had it organized by category (pants, then jackets, then shirts, then knit tops, etc.) for years, and it just wasn't working very well for me. Important categories were way on the ends, and it was hard to see what went with what, and I was just ready for a change. We'll see how useful this systems turns out to be, but in the meantime I'm really happy with it because it looks like a beautiful rainbow! :)

In other news, I bought a few new things yesterday and when I got home I moved a TON of stuff out of the closet. Some of it was out of season, some of it was too big, and some of it was just plain past its prime. So, although you can't see from the picture, I freed up a ton of space in my number two closet, which I share with my husband and is now home to my casual jackets and the few pieces that are so multi-colorful that they couldn't find a home in my main closet "rainbow!"

Anybody else organize only by color?
