Thank you for the kind and encouraging words. I'm feeling pretty discouraged today; on the one hand, I know it's a competitive (though improving) market, but on the other hand, it's disheartening to get the feedback that I am over-qualified for the jobs I apply for that contain responsibilities I've already held, but I'm not qualified enough for the next step up because most of my tasks have been so heavily administrative and entry-level.

I just don't know how to market myself effectively to bridge the gap between what I enjoy doing most, and what I've actually been spending my time doing for the last couple years. I'm willing to keep doing entry level tasks, and I make that very clear when I'm interviewing, but apparently I'm not really hiding that the analytical and strategic aspects of what I have done, while limited, have been the things I am most excited about.

So far, the one phone interview I was most hopeful about, where the conversation with the hiring manager was not only very thought-provoking with both of us asking great questions of the other, but it was just fun - well, indications are that I didn't even make the cut for the in-person interview round.

Part of the reason I'm discouraged, though, is that I'm just plain drained at my current job. I've been unhappy there for such a long time and am really eager to move into a more positive environment. I'm trying to keep my enthusiasm and energy level up for job searching in all my free moments, but it's really exhausting to do both at the same time.

It is very important to find the right fit for a job (and clothes). In my last position, I had almost complete control over the structure and process for the financial system, budgeting, and planning. I felt challenged on a regular basis but the office politics were very trying so I moved on. In my new role, I feel far less in control or challenged and often feel the work I am doing could be done at a lower level. If you can find the right combination of duties/responsibility and atmosphere, you will have it made.

I always love blue on you and coral is just as gorgeous. Saturated colors love you.
Yeah, Caro, that is my strategy too. But the gist from the one position is that they really didn't want someone who was wanting to move up soon, and the other position I get the impression that the hiring manager thinks I might feel stifled as the department is small and there isn't much opportunity for upward mobility.

YLF - love the coral.

I was in a similar situation in an interview years ago Kari. I got the job & through it landed my perfect job, casting assistant in a public tv station, making some really interesting programmes.

They asked me the same question about why I wasn't looking for more senior positions & my answer was that I felt it was important to understand the organisation from the ground up & felt that was best done in administration & that I wanted to work for a company that promoted from the inside. This could backfire if the interviewers were worried about their positions but just a suggestion.

The pairing of coral and cobalt is just divine.

It sounds to me like your job hunting/interviewing process is going very well. It's funny how it can still be an incredibly positive experience when it doesn't result in you getting the position.
So a quick update to these posts for those who are interested. The position I'd originally bought the suit for for is not going to turn into a job offer; while the hiring mgr. expressed no doubt that I could do the job very well, they feared I was over-qualified, or over-motivated, and would be quickly bored. And while I don't shy away from administrative work, that's fine - if the job truly would not make a good use out of the strengths and skills that drive me the most, then I probably wouldn't like it very much in the long run!

I had two phone screenings this week for very different positions that went well, and am waiting to hear whether they will bring me in for an in person meeting. Both sound like fantastic companies to work for, but for one the hiring manager might feel me to be over-qualified even though I expressed a lot of interest in the key responsibilities of the role - we'll see. The second is very different than any position I've ever held, but the actual tasks of the job touch on a lot of the skills and responsibilities I've performed in the past.

Anyway, I'm having a lot of fun with this process, but I also feel like I have a bit of a dilemma. As greatly as I've revamped my resume, the actual roles I've held have been largely administrative. And when I am in consideration for another administrative role, I have people asking why I'm not opting for a higher level position - yet when I apply for those higher level positions, I do not make the cut due to lacking the necessary experience they are asking for. I don't mind moving laterally if I'm moving to an environment and a job that will be a better fit, and more enjoyable; it's just that I feel like there is a disconnect between how the actual jobs I've held look on paper, vs. how I present in real life.

So, that's where I am. And I'm still looking!

You really rock coral! I love all the iterations, and the wrap dress is so pretty on you. The jean jacket pairs so well too.
