Fellow colourful winter* dresser chiming in! I don't think I even own any neutral toned knitwear** lol - it's saffron, orange, teal, plum. Oh no, wait, I lied - I do have ONE cream, balloon sleeved pullover

But I agree it's all about the outfit formula when it comes to dressing for your least preferred season! Whilst my jumpers aren't patterned (my particular formula tends to relegate prints to scarves & inner tops), I do employ a similar 'colourful top' strategy - it actually makes dressing easier, since I keep my shoes, bags & jewellery neutral as a result (with the occasional pseudo neutrals).

---
* We don't really get spring or autumn here, so this is my subtropical version :P
** Since heavy & bulky wool sweaters aren't really appropriate either, I'm applying this to my lighter weight cotton/ merino jumpers

I love that Bazaar quote, The Cat!

When I got my current job, I was interviewing at a place they already knew me (and my colorful shirts), so I decided (for the first time in my life) You Know What, I'm Doing It and turned up in a slightly elevated version of my usual style instead of going with my usual interview suit + shell: a rainbow mermaid-print button-up shirt and dress trousers. I knew that the workplace's formality level was somewhere around "please wear clothing that isn't pajamas if possible", so that was still Dressed Up....but I think my comfort in my personal style really helped me nail the interview.

Lesley and Roberta, great formulas and approaches!

I also like this quote (from the second article Carla linked to):
“ 'Expecting something good to happen as a result of how we dress makes us more open to opportunities.' This phenomenon is directly linked to an increase in confidence, which leads to better posture and more expressive mannerisms, all of which make you appear more attractive."

Lesley, I don't think I have anything to add except that I know this feeling so well! It's thrilling when things crystalize and you just know what you like and need to do.

Oh, one thought! If you like summer casual buttondowns, Kohl's tends to have a wide selection every year. I got a bunch 10 years ago; and then they changed their fit model and it doesn't work for me any more. But I still wear the ones I have.

Janet, it does make sense. I also do like neutrals, and I have liked pairing them with my colored bottoms, but I think I have let that style sort of take over. So the solution is to find more tops and dresses/jumpsuits in my target colors and go from there.

Another thing is that my summer style often incorporates a simple tee (with or without graphics) but I don't love colorful tees. So I think it's time to step up my summer tops into something nicer. To Jacquez's point, I bought fun gingham button-downs last year, one navy and one pink, and they immediately went into constant rotation in that way where you think to yourself, What was I wearing before these came along?

I wear brightly patterned button-front shirts year-round (usually paired with a sweater or cardigan in the winter), so that'd be my vote. Because of my body shape I make a lot of my own, but they're pretty easy to find for body shapes closer to manufactured norms.

I have acquired a nice little collection of patterned knits for cool to cold weather. I don’t wear thick sweaters for the most part — I prefer to layer a light under layer beneath if I need additional warmth. I do like wearing pattern and color on top, not on bottom, and all my winter bottoms — pants and jeans really — are all dark neutrals, so it works for me.

In summer though I do wear patterned floaty midi skirts, and tend to pair them with subdued neutral tops, mostly black. I love a pattern that’s grounded with black, even in hot weather.

I think the key is to focus on your favorite colors and let that drive your strategy. Does that make sense?

I have been watching And Just Like That (the Sex and the City reboot) and mostly it's trash but watching Carrie's outfits has been like throwing a steak to a starving lion.

This month I have come across a few articles on something called ‘dopamine dressing’:

https://www.harpersbazaar.com/.....-dressing/

https://www.townandcountrymag......hion-2022/

…so it seems that you are on trend, and Angie (as usual) is ahead of the game!

I restrict my palette, and I’m into a more subdued (mid tone?) palette for the nonce. Burgundy is my winter colour, and lilac my summer colour - along with a core of blue, black, brown, and white/cream.

I am right there with you! I've discovered that a variety of fun sweaters keep me going through the winter. I do have some neutrals, but mostly to pair with skirts and louder bottoms (which I assume I will wear again someday).

I could really identify with today's post! For most of my adult life I preferred spring/summer/autumn style to winter, because of the possibilities for layering and texture, plus sockless footwear. In the winter, I wear jeans (black or blue) pretty much every day. Boring, I thought!

But this year I hit my formula, and it's because of statement sweaters! I am down to just one neutral pullover, but the rest of my pullover collection is a bunch of loud, bright colors and patterns, and I adore every one. (I knew they had become a signature of mine a few years ago when I attended a meeting in my neon pink pullover and the pullover was referenced later in a social setting (ie, "...so then Lesley walks in in this shocking pink sweater...")).

Suddenly I like my winter wear better! (This is useful; I live in a very wintry place.) But I would like to translate this to more fun for the rest of the year, and I think it comes down to color.

In the warmer months, I do a lot more gray and white on top with color on the bottom. The everyday dresses I have are sort of neutral in color (chambray and grayish blue). I guess I need more bright color on top the rest of the year! Anyone else find themselves in this boat? Got any tips?
