I have discovered this year that sleeveless sheath is the most versatile dress ever! I wear mine layering button downs, blouses, turtlenecks and long tees under them, layering cardigans and jackets over them, adding scarves, necklaces, boots, etc.
Go for it!

Thanks for the ideas, everyone! I was really thinking of this as a blank-canvas type dress...not trendy...more of a basic to play with. I love everyone's ideas. I even have a yellow/white print summer cardi (thx rute!) that would probably look fab with this dress. I'm not too busty, either, so the seaming probably won't be a problem. This was my first posting of a question, and I'm so excited to get so many great opinions. I will definitely post again...and maybe even a photo of myself next time.

that looks like a great "blank canvas" dress. Add a cardigan, jacket, blazer, vest, belt, boots, heels, booties, sandals... the possibilities are practically endless.

the only thing I'd be concerned about is the diagonal seaming below the bustline. If your busty, it could cut across in an unflattering way. Of course, you never know until you give it a try.

Heck, I'm 56 and would wear that in a heartbeat. It's SO versatile! I would style it with an animal print scarf and red flats. Or a cropped teal cardi and purple booties.
I love Glen Plaid.

http://www.jcrew.com/womens_fe.....VlCos205OQ

I am thinking about buying this dress from J.Crew. It claims to be "four-season" weight, and I'm desperate for versatile dresses that can be dressed up or down. I'm afraid it might be too warm in the summer, though. Plus, I'm not quite sure how to jazz it up other than adding a cardigan. Any opinions on this, or ideas for summer casual work dresses (preferably sleeveless) for an apple shape, would be much appreciated! (p.s. nothing too trendy since I'm well into my 40's!)
