Oh how I understand you! Known I'm wearing an office skirt, formal shirt (knotted up at my belly) and trainers Funny, conflicting styles can usually create very interesting combinations, don't limit yourself!

Skylurker, I have to say the few really hot days had me scrambling a bit. I'm not finished shopping summer stuff yet I think. We'll see.

Real_me, that's true. But I did try to limit my style direction in the past, mostly because I have a small wardrobe and a limited budget (still a student) and need things to be versatile and mix and match well. That's much easier when you're picky about styles and go for one overall look.

Thanks Texstyle - the skirt didn't work out, but I definitely plan to indulge my boho side more often going forward. I think it will be fun!

Late to post but glad you are trying the skirt - and I think the batik navy white top in your pinterest page is also really great! I agree that you do have a slight boho slant, so why not indulge it a little. The only thing I wasn't sure about with the skirt is the color of it, but wearing it with a deep charcoal tank would likely be a good match with your hair bookending the skirt.

That's quite normal to give preference to different styles at different time. There is no need to limit yourself with only one style direction when there are so many style choices.
I think that's ok to have different wardrobes for, let's say, work days and for weekends.
I also prefer more formal style for the office (classic or preppy style) while trying to look less formal on weekend dressing up with a feel of boho style.

Update - the skirt doesn't fit, too big on me. So I'm going to send it back. I did like the way it looked, but not really paired with my Birks. That was a bit too earthy after all. But I'm really happy with the other new skirt, so I'm not too sad.

Skylurker, I guess "eclectic simplicity" falls under the category style statement, but that idea never quite worked for me. Too nebulous. For I while I had simple, grounded and feminine as style descriptors (the terms I mentioned above in connection with the Pinterest board weren't supposed to be style descriptors). Anyway, I'm not necessarily looking for descriptors, I just hope to get a better instinct for my warm weather style. As for the look being 90s - I mostly spent those in hand me down boys clothes, so I'll take your word for it. I honestly hadn't thought of this look with the concept of "fashion" in mind...

Celia, that's true.

That is the beauty of returning to 'old ' styles, the second time around you actually know what you are doing with them and wear them your way with your own sense of style.

Your style descriptors sound too vague to be really directional and help you pick / discard items when shopping.
I could never grasp the concept and define my own, btw.
I find the capsule concept less abstract / more practical : buy what you're attracted to, then spend time creating outfits to see if it works.

The maxi skirt with tank and Birks is a look I associate with the 90s, so it could look fashion forward...or dated...hard to tell.

Yes, you're right of course. But I think I'm fairly good at judging advertising. I wasn't really unsure about the dressiness, it was more whether the style would be fitting together with other things I like. I definitely wouldn't think of this skirt as glamorous! It's just a casual cotton maxi skirt to wear around on lazy days.

You know I think sometimes the model wearing the piece along with other pieces and accessories and the ambience make the look. One falls for it becomes of the feelings it evokes.. Taken away from all these the piece may lose its glamour in our eyes, so to say..
So you may try to judge the piece on its own quality before buying it..
Just my 2 cents..

The heart wants what the heart wants, and I'm so glad you are interviewing the skirt. If the skirt otherwise works for you, but if it is annoying long (I got exactly one maxi dress and found out how annoying it is to me to step on one's skirt while going up stairs, or having to go all Jane Austin about it all day) it is cute to tie an off center knot in it, if the fabric is thin. I see lots of people pulling off a very cute hot weather boho look with a simple tee or tank, long print skirt, and Birks. You'll rock it if you want to.

Thanks so much for the input, everyone! I've ordered the skirt, I'm really curious how I'm going to feel wearing it. But I thought I at least wanted to give it a try.

@Caro
I might do that, just go "shopping" without money. Maybe it will help? Although lately I haven't found many things in stores I really liked.

@Runcarla
I really should do more emotional shopping. It's all been very sensible and boring lately.

@Elizabeth
I went back to my (rather neglected) Pinterest account this morning and pinned some summer looks on this board:
https://de.pinterest.com/ridrin/summer-looks/

I kind of see casual, boho, tomboy, preppy and modern classic. Nothing too complicated, not many layers, not many accessories. Which is basically always my preference. And I know that I don't like to wear too short shorts/skirts/dresses in summer and that I prefer comfortable flat shoes.

@Rachylou
That was why I was so unsure, I don't think I want my summer style to be completely different, it should still look somewhat like "me".

@JAileen
Totally agree with you. I don't really have any style descriptors, haven't had them for a while. And I was doing fine without them, until lately when I started to work at my summer wardrobe. I can simply trust my gut feeling with fall/winter/spring style, but that doesn't seem to work so well for summer.

@Bijou
I like shorts too, but I think nothing beats a good skirt. And right now I don't have a single summer skirt!

@Una
Good to hear it's not too much of a departure.

@Barbara Diane
Sounds like a nice outfit for summer! I agree that it's important to have your tops sorted before you buy a skirt.

@Summer
Carefree is the right term. I think to me this skirt says it's summer, I'm on vacation and I'm enjoying my free time...

@Celia
Agree. But I guess I'm safe because the rest of my style thankfully doesn't resemble my sixteen year old self at all. I was a rather awkward teenager.

@Viva
I know exactly what you know by milkmaid dress! Great term, I hadn't heard that one before. I guess I'm so cautious now because it took me so long to find my style preferences. I fear of getting lost again, which is probably quite silly...

I like the idea of that simple tank balancing the boho of that skirt.

Not only do I think it's quite common to have several style personas; I also think it's quite common to have a more boho persona in warmer months. I recently bought what I now call my milkmaid dress (thanks to Rachylou!) -- a shapeless grey linen dress that falls below my knee, with capped sleeves. It's so far from my typical style I can hardly explain! But I was so drawn to it, and it's been perfect for some early summer days. There is a part of me deep inside that this dress speaks to.

I wouldn't fight this urge, especially if you can indulge it inexpensively and have some fun.

Today's outfit was a white, gray and black print (sort of tie dye looking) maxi skirt and short sleeve black tee with a little detail at the neck. Heavenly for the hot but non-oppressive level of heat we had today. I really wondered about it when I purchased it but it has been a wonderful refreshing addition to my wardrobe so I suggest you go for it. Especially since you already have something to go with it.

Trying a few summer boho pieces may be the wildcards that you need to keep your look fresh this summer. I can see you in this skirt and think it would be lovely for summer weather. Living in Australia, I incorporate a touch of boho from time to time simply because it works so well in the heat and it is more dressy that wearing shorts and t-shirts.

I think having style descriptors is supposed to help you not frustrate you. If you want to change direction, you should change direction.

Well, I know I had to have a good, long, hard think about my summer style goals - beyond the practicalities. Had a lot of mistarts. Found I didn't really like switching out styles.

Summer dressing is the toughest my book.

Astrid, have you tried creating a pinterest board of summer styles that speak to you? Have a couple if you like... things you'd actually wear, and things you'd like on others.
It can be very illuminating. You may find something emerging that you couldn't pin point without seeing it several times

I was experiencing some wardrobe angst, and a stressful situation sent we into retail therapy. Anyway, a bit of emotional shopping actually resulted in some inspirational purchases that are making me VERY happy.

I say get the maxii skirt and 1 or 2 other pieces that make it work, and see how it works with what you currently have. Have a summer fling!

If you are feeling restless I would suggest just trying on some different looks - you don't have to buy anything, just see how you feel. Maybe you will find a totally different summer style For me summer = dresses. I wear dresses far more in summer than I do in winter.

Thanks, that's good to hear. I know this is a style that usually wouldn't get much love here. I have two other things on order which should arrive tomorrow, I think I'll wait to see how those work and then decide on the skirt.
