Fluids are moving more in the congested areas, and my ear pressure/compromised hearing fluctuates now instead of just constantly getting worse. When I woke up there was a marked improvement. At other points throughout the day things felt completely blocked again, but at least it's not constant anymore!! I'm coughing like crazy, but it's a much looser cough than before. Fever has been gone for a day or so now, and body achiness is present but bareable. I am sorry if you have already said this but are you having high fever and/or coughing? If not, then most likely it is a viral middle ear infection and resting, taking pain killers, drinking A LOT of water or tea and waiting will be the best to do. However, now that you started with the antibiotics, please ensure you finish the treatment, even if you feel a lot better, otherwise it can make matters worse.<br /> As for your original question, about how your ears can handle yet another infection, I would say to not worry - I understand the importance of your hearing being at its best at all times and can almost guarantee that it will be back to normal soon. Untreated ear infections can result in chronic ear diseases, that can cause hearing loss but that's not your case - you are being treated and will have and ENT doctor consultation if you need. So, I trust you will be fine!<br /> Anyway, feel free to send me a message if you like. A big warm hug to you. I can understand why you'd be so scared. I have had a terrible virus before that was not only an 8 week long head cold but also a huge inner ear problem. It ended up destroying some of my inner ear nerves but the good news is that my hearing is still fully intact. The best thing they told me to do was to really pay attention to rest and sleep. Also, when you see your GP, you might want to ask them about a water pill if that doesn't clash with the other meds - it can help reduce the fluid build up in the ear. They can have side effects so you need to talk out the pros and cons with the docs. My doc wasn't in, but I saw someone else in her office and had a swab taken. I'll likely get those results back Monday, and with a bit of luck I'll be in the office to receive them in person (I will insist on an appointment with my gp at the earliest opportunity if this hasn't improved a bit by tomorrow morning at the latest). Her office isn't open on weekends, so Monday would be the best possible scenario. As for someone moving in, I'm afraid that's not really possible at the moment, but that's ok. I wouldn't want to expose anyone else to this bug, and right now we can manage. You are an absolute darling to be so concerned. :)</p> <p>Kari: I've tried all the usual ear-popping tricks to no avail. I've got the first antibiotic in my system, so let's hope that works.</p> <p>Marlene, you're right on, it's all about reducing inflammation to allow things to drain. In my case all three (ears, nose and throat) are experiencing issues, so it's one big congestion-fest. Very much hoping that eases, and soon. </p> <p>Marianna: what a horrendous experience!
