For detailed weather forecasts (minimum and maximum temperatures, sun, rain, wind, etc.), I recommend this website: yr.no. I visit it daily whereever I am. It gives you:
- an easy oversight over the next couple of days
- an hour-by-hour forecast for the next 48 hours
- a longterm (9 days) forecast where each 24 hours day is divided into 4 parts

This is the current long term forecast for Dunedine:
https://www.yr.no/place/New_Ze...../long.html
And this is the current long term forecast for Christchurch:
https://www.yr.no/place/New_Ze...../long.html

Of course, if you are going in December, you will have to check again then.

Deb, just saying that Lucy feels the cold! You don't, perhaps?!
It really depends on how long it is warm and how cold it gets at night. My advice was based on winters in my part of Western Australia where maxes like that are accompanied by minimums of 4-10. I may not need my coat in my lunch break but I do need it morning and night.
That said, it might depend on the conference schedule whether you'll need the coat. Like do you have you walk far from your accommodation tonight the venue, are there night events etc.

Well, I live in a different part of the world (Scandinavia), but I am very familiar with cool summer temperatures.

On cool summer days (less than 18 degrees celcius), I will wear at least one layer with long sleeves, and closed-toe shoes plus hosiery. (No need for boots or opaques, though.) My outerwear will be a light trenchcoat, raincoat, moto jacket, or just a blazer, cardigan, bomber jacket or other thin jacket.

Your raincoat and perhaps your puffer (if it is thin) sounds fine. Skip the wool coat, which doesn't sound very summery. Instead, consider to bring camisoles, comfortable scarves, beautiful shawls and good cardigans. Dressing in layers is a great idea, as you can easily add or subtract items depending on how cool or warm you feel.

A wool coat or puffer at 15- 18 degrees....seriously? i would say 18 is shirt, or at most, light cotton sweater weather or to some, perhaps leather jacket or light blazer weather. It is 18 degrees right now where I am, and I'm wearing a singlet! Definitely take a rain coat and one outer piece....you'll be fine.

Ooh thanks Jenni and Sal for the info! Much appreciated.

The Art Gallery sounds great. We are hoping to go out from ChCH on one day, out to the French village, and I'd really really like to see the dolphins. We have a boat and I really like dolphins, and these are a different variety to the Australian ones.

I haven't had much time to plan or read but I am getting excited now :)

I think the suede jacket could be good for evening and days out. I would be surprised if you need more than a light suit jacket for the conference. I would bring a warm camisole/singlet/heat tech layering piece to wear as a back up under your suit jacket. You can get them from Kathmandu, Uniqlo, department stores etc

I was in Christchurch in October. One day I wore jeans and a tee with loafers. One day I wore a light sweater with soft joggers and a puffer over the top. I was on holiday so it was all casual.

The Art Gallery is fabulous in ChCh and well worth a visit. The Tannery is a nice shopping centre but may be harder to get to (interesting boutiques rather than chain stores).

Lots of good eating out but imagine you will want to eat close to where your hotel is.

Hi Lucy, I'm in Auckland which is near the top of the North Island so much warmer than Dunedin and even Christchurch. Our weather is very variable so I agree with Sal about the puffer and raincoat. I wouldn't take a wool coat if I were going in early summer. Today in Auckland it is a hot spring day and I am relaxing ( afternoon off) in short sleeved top, cropped pants, and bare feet at home. I think checking the weather forecast and layering lighter jackets with your conference outfits should do the trick. Suede-like jacket sounds good.

Thank you everyone for your replies!
I've realised after reading your replies that part of the problem may be that I don't really have any other warm clothing like shawls or cashmere - I have light cotton jumpers which are sufficient for a Brisbane winter, and when I go to Sydney or Melbourne I take a coat.
I am travelling to Dunedin for one conference, and Christchurch for the other. I gather Dunedin will be quite a bit cooler. I think I will be grateful for the puffer there - Joy, I did check and the raincoat and puffer do layer. Phew! I had not even thought of that!
I think you are right that I need to check the weather a few days before. The overview websites saw 15 for Dunedin and 18 for Christchurch on average, but there might be a lot of variation!
The only other option I really have is a black suede-like motto jacket, which would be perfect with jeans on sightseeing days, but might not be so good for the conference. I will be taking two light suit jackets for the conference, but they are quite fitted and don't fit layers underneath. But perhaps the answer is to check closer to the time, and decide between the wool coat or the motto. Either way, I won't be naked!

You might want to dig up the post from someone trying to decide on taking a coat along for a day in Zurich in October. (I’m on my phone, so can’t search). In the end, I’m pretty sure she just took blazers, sweaters, etc. The Cat has some good ideas there for adding warmth. That’s what I would do. Then again, if you feel the cold maybe you need it. I’m no help at all.

I agree with Sal - the weather may be unpredictable, but if I read your info correctly you will be in the South Island in December. I think it would be unlikely you would need a wool coat then, and not worth the luggage space. Apart from a cold snap last week temperatures have been unseasonably high, with many South Island areas already experiencing temps in the mid 20’s.

I would suggest checking the historical weather for December and the 10 day forecast on the NZ Metservice website just before you are due to leave home. You haven’t said which part of the Sth Island you will be in but the weather on the West Coast can be quite different to that on the East Coast. The highest temp Christchurch can reach in December is 30 degrees but the lowest is just 4 degrees overnight. A scarf, puffer and a raincoat together with clothing you can layer for cooler mornings and evenings should suffice.

Hi Lucy

I think the puffer and the raincoat are essential for NZ travels - so I am pleased you are picking those. Our climate is unpredictable.

I am on the fence whether you would need a wool coat in November but if you feel the cold (and it will be chilly compared to Queensland) then throw one in. Useful to wear to arrive at the conference and even maybe out to dinner in the evening.

If I was going I would take the puffer, raincoat, suit jackets/blazer etc and a lightweight but warm scarf that worked with the jacket or blazer. Lawyers are more conservative but at a conference they may be less dressy. My SIL is a Christchurch lawyer and she lives in her puffer.

It could also be quite warm. Chch and Central Otago can have early summers - the days will be super long too.

I hope that helps - I will keep an eye on the thread if you have more questions.

Does the puffer jacket fit under your raincoat? Try it because that is an ideal combination for Ireland too. Those little puffers are amazing for a bit of extra warmth, fitting under other coats and jackets. Don't forget the power of a big blanket scarf.

If 18 degrees is the high, I wouldn’t hesitate to take a third coat if you have room. I’m about to travel myself (expecting 5-15 degrees C) and hope I have room for a puffer, trench, and light wool coat. The puffer is kind of a security blanket against the cold, isn’t it?

I would! Take the three coats that is. Those uniqlo coats pack really small don't they?
And on days with maxes like that where I live, with lawyers to mix with, I would want a dressier wool coat. Besides maxes are just maxes. You need to consider minimums as well, especially for mornings and evenings.

Hi all - seeking your wisdom! I really enjoyed Angie's post on packing for a cold trip, but I have a few extra questions.
I'm heading off to the south island of New Zealand next month. It's the start of summer, but will still be cool (by my standards at least!). Weather reports suggest it will be top of 15-18 degrees celsius in the day. To put this in perspective, in Brisbane it would only get to this temp for two or maybe three days per year, in the very depths of winter, so I'm a bit perplexed by it all. I know some of you have been to NZ - and Sal, I know you are based there, so I was wondering if you had any advice on jackets!
I bought a Uniqlo puffer, because I am petrified of being cold! It packs up into a tiny parcel, so I'm not worried about packing it. Then I got a good raincoat (I am also going to Ireland next year, so this is a key purchase).
But I am wondering whether to wear a third, dressy wool coat on the plane. During my time in NZ, I will go to two conferences, and I don't overly want to wear "gear" to either. There will be lots of lawyers there, who tend to dress up. But on the other hand, three jackets seems an overkill for 10 days away in summer! Any thoughts for someone who feels the cold?
