I wish I had seen this sooner, because I just happen to be at a conference for work myself. The miss matchy business look is very on point at a congress, at least the past few years from what I've seen. I do wear a full suit on my most professional days but ONLY if it is a bold color, my current one is marine blue with epaulets and a lot of buttons, it's a bold piece. And my other "suit" on the road with me is a cobalt blazer and black trousers. Everything is bright!

I'm not a dress gal, but the dress options you have here will also work. I see lots of dresses too. I rarely see dark colors at congresses (at least not at my current one but I am in Europe and I always see more color here anyway). Also, shoes. Please make sure you can really, really walk in them. I've stopped packing heels because I am standing and walking so much that my heels never work! And I don't see others sporting heels very often either. You don't have to forgo your heels, just be certain they really can go the distance because you may be standing for a long time. I'm usually on my feet for 10-12 hours at a time at a congress.

Also, pick up some Blister band aids from the store. Keep them on you. Shoes have a crazy way of suddenly causing blisters when I'm on the road. Maybe it's just me but better safe than sorry! Finally, I do pack a pair of dark wash jeans. When going out to dinner with clients, most people dress down the pants part of the outfit. My go to is a blouse and dark wash jeans and another flat shoe. My ballet flats work overtime at congresses.

I bring 2 bags. I put my wallet and phone in a large bag to attend sessions, meet and greets, and walk the exhibit floor. Then I swap for a smaller bag for client dinners.

Have fun at your first conference with business cards. So exciting to be at a conference with a new role. Good luck!

Thank you very much for your comments, ladies! They have helped a lot.

Barbara Diane, I am going to have to wear those shoes this time as I have no other walk-able dressy black shoes option. I will consider something more classic for the future.

Aly, I will make sure to pack my bag as lightly as possible.

Skylurker, thanks! I do not have matching pants for jacket #3, but I do have pants that go well with it. I am getting a pedicure today. And I wouldn't wear any of the dresses with out the topper (minus the gala dress) at a work function anyway!

Anchie, I do have some ponte blazers, but they are on the longer side and thus not quite right for dresses. I hear you on the patterned jackets, I have found a perfect little cropped plaid one but have to consider really carefully what I need to buy first.

Jenni NZ, you must a be a natural at professional dressing, then Thank you for the gala accessories suggestion.

Angie, thank you so much for all the help! Yes, I will stick to dresses for this conference because of all the reasons you mention. I will also bring a mini separates capsule ( 2 pants, a blazer and 2 blouses) just in case. I will bring some sheer hose as you recommend. I will worry about dressing for colder weather later. My most structured bag is the bone BR, so I will bring that one - it will also lighten all the black nicely. I will report on everything when I get back. I am leaving on Tuesday evening and coming back in the night between Saturday and Sunday.

As for the main bag, choose the most structured one that works with your outfits.

Again, this conference is a learning curve at this point, Tanya. Observe, feel your way, and listen to your emotions about your outfits. Then report back to us how it all went down. I'm sure it's going to go well!

Lots of great discussion here. Sorry I'm late to chime in.

Tanya, I'd stick to dresses for the conference for now since that seems to be the cultural norm, and you have many on hand for the current weather. Mentor said no suits - listen to him this time round. Then gauge for yourself next time round. You might see women in your field wear trousers as Winer hits.

As for hosiery. Bring it along just in case. I would try sheer black or grey - not nude. As we hit colder temps, we'll have the discussion again. Hose can be a SUPER fun addition to an outfit.

As for your fabulous outfits, these are knock-out Killer standouts: #2, 3, 6 and 7. Next are #8 and 12. Nice addition of the scarf.

Of course, the Gala outfit is STUNNING. I vote choose your favourite colour for the wrap.

I am astounded at all this. It makes me realise how much effort can be put into professional dress and I feel amazed I have succeeded at all having clearly never paid enough attention!
So I may not give good enough advice, is my disclaimer. But FWIW: I like the Ted Baker cardi the best because it looks the most approachable, you look a little aloof in all black and you want to network. Then the bolero tweed and lastly the white Express which I prefer unbuttoned. Both black dresses are smart. I like the grey tote best to lighten your look, the black seems too floppy. The blush jacket should also be nice. The gala dress is good with all burgundy accessories. Hopefully with all that you look professional yet approachable. And I'm sorry they're mostly older men you have to network with . Roll on the days when the playing field is level. I used to wish that I had a wife.

You have a great wardrobe and lots of choices here. Regarding the toppers for dresses, do you have maybe softer blazers, like ponte or knitted? They look little less formal then those made from suiting fabric. I myself prefer blazers that have some tonal pattern, like tweed, houndstooth, herringbone or chevron, then it is easier to mix them with solid pants and dresses because they don't need to match exactly.

At my work place, women in the upper hierarchy also wear skirts and dresses - always with cardis, not jackets. Dress + jacket pairing looks really formal to me, even more formal than trouser suits. So I'd choose the cardis over blazers.
Really like the look of jacket #3 for a conference though, do you have trousers to pair with it?
Since your shoes are open in the back, your heels need to be well groomed.
First dress looks a bit va-va-voom without topper (bare shoulders, front slit).

Facinating discussion - mostly because I often face a similar dilemma. Its great that you don't have luggage limitations and the dresses you have collected are beautiful!

Anyway, the discussion around bags to carry has me thinking - would it be an option to use your bag to take your outfits a step below "business suiting"?

I would echo the "lighter the better" sentiment for carrying bags at conferences too. I like to take photos of the schedule/program and anything else that I can (or transfer pdf copies to my phone if possible) so I don't have to carry them.

Just for reference, I do wear hosiery (skin tone with a slight sheen - I have very shiny hair so they just seem right). I don't wear make-up (its just not me) but I do pin my long hair up formally.

You have a lot of great clothes. Not my area of expertise, so I will leave most of it to the others. The wedge shoes in most of your photos are the only part of your outfits that to me look a little young/delicate/ ballet like to me for day to day at the conference, as you mentioned wanting to be taken seriously and to counteract the fact that you look young. They just don't have the same gravitas as the rest of your outfit.

I like the scarves for adding color near your face, but I love the memorable jewelry idea if you have any that works. I'm not sure I do. But I do love the idea mentioned above of jewelry as conversation starter.

This is so interesting. I've been thinking about what I'd do and following the discussion with great interest. I think I would personally fall back on my preppy roots and dress like either a nun or stewardess: collarless jacket, straight skirt, fine jumper, block heeled court shoes. I'd be shy of wearing ankle straps ("too pretty")... Or I'd wear matched straight skirt and vest/waistcoat thingy (like a uniform), same court shoes...

The conference is held in a hotel, I do not not know the specifics of the rooms. I can imagine that the events will probably be in bunch of ballrooms considering the sheer volume of people and need for multiple sessions at the same time. Usually there are two types of settings: a big hall where all the posters are being displayed , and people walk/talk ( no sitting), and dark auditoriums with lots of rows of chairs for the talks. Nobody interacts at the second type : people are there just to listen to speakers present. I may end up having a number of one-on-one meetings during the conference at quieter places, that hopefully involve tables and sitting. At this point I have one breakfast meeting set-up, but lots of scheduling is due to take place on Monday and Tuesday.
That is too bad about the RM tote :( I will think more about the right structured tote after the conference, as have a diferent business trip coming up in mid-October.

So what venue is the conference being held in ? A hotel conference /"ballroom" ? An office conference room ? An academic theatre ? And what is the seating like - rows of chairs or are you at tables ( i.e. Perfect place to hide / stash bag under ) ? I'll be honest about the RM tote . I've had mine for about 2 or 3 years , and for what I paid for it ( pretty expensive in Canada) , it's not looking as special as it used to - and it's not like I use it everyday . I wouldn't buy it again if I had the opportunity to replace it .

He he, I am quite enjoying our discussion, Lisa. I am not sure what I am going to do about the bag yet, maybe Angie will chime in what she thinks. I will admit it is quite frustrating to have a large wardrobe and lots of choice in almost every category, and still not be able to locate items that are quite right. But I guess that is what happens with big transitions. I am convinced now than I need to get that black Minkoff sooner rather than later. I am turning 40 next month (urgh) and perhaps that should be my birthday present to myself.
Dinner meetings are a very new category for me to deal with. I don't know if I will have any this time around, but I find the whole concept fascinating.

ETA: Yes, those are my clothes that I am considering for the separates capsule based on your advice. Blouses are one rare thing that I can easily fit without much difficulties. If only pants were like that Thank you for the lovely compliment!

Tanya - the pics I posted are all indeed designer pieces ..just for ideas , not for purchasing The purse/portfolio issue is tricky - I don't care for the look of a big soft bag with a business outfit. I think it takes away from the look - but I admit I don't have the perfect solution either . I prefer to have to carry as little as possible and have a flat , polished leather envelope style bag with a shoulder strap that fits papers , an iPad or MacBook and my phone , wallet and lipstick . Now you're getting me going on this - and I should mind my own business I use a RM tote like the burgundy one you linked here for travel and for the odd work appointment - but not for dinner meetings or anything like that .

That makes sense, Lisa. I do plan to bring those black loafers with small black heel attached above with me.

I feel much more like me in pants, too, I have been wearing jeans 90% of the time since I was 10. I don't have any really great work pants yet, aside for the simple black Elie Taharis from above as I started building my new work wardrobe with focus on a couple of great jackets and sheath dresses, and all those nicer pieces are quite expensive. I have been observing a lot and noticed that women in my new line of work are in dresses 90% of the time. This includes some very formal meetings where men are in full suits and ties - women wore \very business-y sheath dresses. I have been trying to fit in and hence my purchase of couple of such dresses for more formal work occasions. I will bring both capsules to the conference and carefully observe there, too.

Ah Lisa, I think we cross-posted. I take it you don't consider any of the three bag options I posted quite right?

I do have a portfolio-type tote that is even called that, but it is navy snakeskin and I am planning on black based capsule. However, the navy is very dark so it may still work if the other options are unacceptable. I am personally fine with carrying a bag and putting it on some chair or similar during meetings - most other women I have observed at these conferences do the same. I am not quite sure how an envelope-style bag exactly looks like, but I am envisioning a large flat clutch which absolutely does not work for me - I generally dislike clutches and find having to carry them in my hands really fussy.

I am hoping to get the second, RM tote in black at some point in the near future when the budget allows for it. I would prefer the third, RL one , also in black, instead, but such an expense wouldn't be in my budget for quite a while.

Oh, I wouldn't do a high heel either. I just mean something with some gravitas and substance - a polished block heeled loafer or brogue or pump. I'm far more into the menswear look than you are, I realize that. I like the ease of pants, and now much more authoritative yet relaxed they can look. I don't do those kinds of dresses easily either. I have a real thing about how women present themselves in professional situations, especially one heavily skewed toward men. I've been through it in the publishing business and in the garment industry. .

Lisa p, thank you SO much for your very well thought-through input, it is much appreciated.

I couldn't agree more with you regarding hair and make-up. I have very recently had my hair highlighted and cut - I have typical long layers cut, but I am not very adventurous when it comes to hair cuts. And my new stylist has thought me some simple styling tricks, so I should be all set there. I have also just updated my make-up collection with some high-quality products to achieve polished and natural look.

I hear what you are saying on the pantsuits and dresses. I was explicitly told NOT to wear a full (pant)suit, but could certainly go for separates. I am putting together a small capsule of them to take with me, too. Some items I am considering are below, plus a simple classic blush Equipment-like silk blouse I do not have a Find for. I do not have any coats like what you describe, but like the idea for the future.

Unfortunately,I can not do high heels at all, I can do medium if they are really comfy, and do best with wedges. The conference is going to include lots walking and standing, so I have to go even lower and more comfortable than I normally do. Some shoes I am considering are also below.

Dresses are neither easy nor typical for me: I am very new to this type of dressing and difficult to fit, and thus had to hunt for these couple of dresses very long and very hard, spend lots of money and get extensive alterations. So I would certainly like to wear at least some of them. I will take both capsules: separates and dresses with me and decide on the spot what to wear depending on my peers and my impressions - I will probably end up wearing some outfits from each capsule.

Do you have a more structured and business-looking bag - that could double as a portfolio-type of thing? I know that having to carry a "purse "is also a quick way to make me feel too fussy and not professional enough. Where will you be able to put your bag/tote/purse during meetings? A smooth-finish leather envelope style bag would be lovely.

Angie, a few more of your points I have not addressed yet.

Regarding hose, I am very torn. I belong to the generation that was raised believing nude hose was frumpy and bare legs are the way to go at any occasion. However, I am also aware that in some fields it may not be considered professional to go hose-less. For the conference, I am inclined to err on the side of caution and go with very sheer nude hose. What do you and YLF think? Micro-fishnets would not work here, I am afraid.

Regarding bags, I have also not quite decided. My trusty silver RM satchel is looking a little worn - still OK for regular work, but not so much for the conference. I am debating between RM grey tote, RM black hobo and BR bone satchel. I am thinking of getting the classic RM black MAB tote at some point in the future. Clutches choices are silver, burgundy an black, depending on other accessories I am recommended,as described in my previous comment.

You are absolutely right that I need a couple of sleeved professional dresses going forward. I have my eyes on a couple but they are pricey so I need to think carefully and consider many things.

I have added some photos to the original post.

I have tried the two black dresses on and you can see them in photos #1-#8 on their own, with the cardi, tweed bolero jacket and cropped white Express jacket that wasn't in the original collection because I do not have a find for it. As mentioned in the previous comment, the black jacket did not work. I have also just ordered this Express cropped jacket in very pale blush (Find #1 shows wrong color) which should fit very similarly to the white one. I ordered it with overnight shipping and it should get here by Tuesday ( I leave Tuesday evening). I am curious which topper you like best for which dress.

Angie, I love both of your suggestions for the grey dress and will try them on and post photos on Monday evening after I pick up the dress from the tailor's.

I have added another potential dress, tweed BR (find #2) ,#9-#12, with short sleeved cardi, black tux jacket and different ponte/leather jacket that I am planning to take with me as travel topper.

Angie, for the Gala, you can see the dress in #13-#14. Shoe options are black (#12) or dark burgundy (#13)Okalas. Clutch options are large silver, burgundy patent (#13) or simple black satin (not shown). Pashminas are in photo #15: cream cashmere, blue and orchid non-cashmere, burgundy-shiny blue. What are the best accessories combos? I could do black shoes, silver clutch and cream pashmina, or all the burgundys as in #14, or some other combo.

Thank you SO much, Sydney, Kkards, Angie, Laura, Jane, Gryffin and Ryce. Your all raise excellent points and your comments are very helpful.
I have a lot to say/reply/ask, so I am going to divide this into a couple of comments.

In terms of color and standing out vs. all black, my opinion is somewhere in the middle. I do not mind wearing all black if there is a mix of textures and some lightness/color/accessory near the face. However, I have tried the black tux jacket over two black dresses, and decided it does not work. Not only does it look too heavy, the undertones of black do not match which bothers me even more. I will bring a pashmina for both color and warmth, and in the comment I will post options for your to help me choose.

Kkards, as you can see from the photos I have now added, the v-neck on the Blackk Halo dress is really small. I appreciate the sentiment.

Gryffin, I have a couple of interesting necklaces that may work in a way you suggest, I will play with them tomorrow. I also have a bunch of silk neckerchiefs, that I use for similar purpose, including one in pattern that matches the cardigan (some attached in Finds here)

Ryce, I will look for Boss Jemida jacket in the future - right now Nordies does not have it in my size. I also appreciate your advice about Elie Tahari long sleeved dresses - I will keep my eyes open for them.
