I love the thought and inspiration in this post. I do see you as creative in the way you dress, but with sophistication. I'm thinking of some of the patterned dresses you wore when I was in Toronto, especially your creative outfit we wore for the large group meetup.

Thank you so much for sharing this, Celia! You have made some wonderful discoveries. I agree with Steph, this is graduate work! And I am really looking forward to hearing what you consider your "signature" wardrobe items. I made the discovery this year that jackets are one of my signature wardrobe items—and I hadn't been wearing them for about twenty years! No wonder I didn't feel like "myself." !!! The minute I got one I started feeling more alive.

oh celia, this is marvelous! Truly, great personal style takes into account the cultural style 'soup' in which the person lives, their individual physical characteristics, and also their inner self, personality, emotions, loves.

It really takes a lot of thought to grasp this truth! Most ot the media advice is stuck on 'this works for everyone' (no, it won't). Some blogs get into what will work with certain figure types or professions/lifestyles. But really getting down to who you are, how others perceive you, and working all that to your own advantage and purpose - that's grad level stuff!! :)

celia, i've just been very interested in Jennifer Robin, an artist and personal style consultant here in California. She writes about using style as a creative outlet, and as an artist herself it goes pretty deep - you can find info about her, her books and her blog here:

Wonderful post Celia! I always love reading these introspective posts :)

Your comment "I wanna be perceived as creative and fun" and how you feel there's a disconnect here is something I can completely relate to. I had a very similar revelation, and once I took the step to go past just making good, flattering outfits into outfits that reflected my personal creativity and personality things really just clicked and took off from there. I am looking forward to seeing you put these wonderful thoughts into practice!

I am so happy you shared your revelations with us (sorry it took feeling under the weather for you to do it - hope you feel better) as these things truly help me understand myself better as well.
We all have our own version of what is right for us - what makes us feel frumpy for example. I am not great at following "rules" and love to see variations in style and thought so that statement of yours really clicked.
I always admire your sense of color so I am pleased to know you feel good in the bolder looks - you should wear what feels great!
And I love how you want to inspire your DD to make the right choices for herself - that is truly the best thing I have read all day

Celia I emjoy reading posts about people's style journeys particularly as each one has a snippet of wisdom I can apply to myself thsnk you for sharing with us I like what you say in para 2 about the disconnect you used to have between what you saw & liked in mags & what you actually wore. I like that through this forum you have connected eith the fun & creative elements of your personality & that you are now showing them on the outside.

I realise that how we dress i.e. Our style is very much a creative/artistic process & is more than just picking colours & shapes that suit. I know I can do that. But creativity is in the way you create an image with the same things others wear - through pattern mixing, accesorising etc etc - I still have a lot to learn in that area.

Celia, you are light years ahead of me in your style definitions and goals - good work!
Meeting you in person I confirm that your personality is fun and has a creative side to it. I don't remember seeing frump anywhere but there is no limit for improvement in anything!
High five for being OK to be the most dressed up person - I can cocur as i have the same at work and it is perfectly OK with me too.
Koodos on color bravery! You look smashing in muted deep colors like teal, rust and burgundy and I am sure there are more colors which suit you beautifully. A lady who wears a teal coat in <mostly-casual-let's-belnd-in> Canada is totally brave with colors!
This is an interesting thought on dressie ocaasion wear. I don't have many of those so I tend to use clothes I can wear everyday too and then I don't look galm enough for those rare special occasions. Then I buy something just for dressy occasions and it pains me that I wear it a couple of times a year...What a dilemma...
Thanks for sharing your thought, they made me think...

I love introspective posts and epiphanies. Never apologize for these, Celia, please! In fact, don't apologize for posting at all. I love how much time YLFers make to share with each other, encourage each other, genuinely help each out with critique and styling ideas... why would you apologize for participating and contributing?

Also, especially love how the so-called navel gazing leads to more 'direct' epiphanies. Like: "We all need to find out what *our* frumpy is and then just accept it and avoid those things." Light bulb just went off here! (Thanks a ton, Claire!) I've been fussing about a silhouette I wore last week, wondering why it feels frumpy when the colours and proportions seemed okay... and it's because it had elements of frumpy-on-me that looks fine if I stand still and tall, but does unhelpful things when I actually start to move around, or fasten a seat belt etc)

Back to your thoughts, Celia, I find I can really relate to wanting more capsules to play with, plus a tad more separation. I know a lot of people get really excited about maximum versatility, and I am a little leery of that; but I think it's nice when you can do 5-6 different and easy thing with the same garment, as well as when you can be sure at least 3-4 tops match any of your bottoms. Very freeing --- though I could be projecting as I haven't ever lived on that particular cloud!

Also, will be watching your WIWs with interest. I have similar goals of incorporating a little lightheartedness or whimsy in my clothes, and think this is one of the trickier style goals to fulfil. Love watching some experts here do it --- Greenglove, Diana, Shannon, Ironkurtin...

*rubbing hands together eagerly*

Are you kidding me right now? I LOVE reading posts like this! What you're learning is valuable not only to you, but often helps others have an AHA moment of their own, so thank you Celia!

I really liked what you said about certain things looking frumpy *on you*. I think Una's post about style vibes touched on that (or something she said in one of my threads). We all need to find out what *our* frumpy is and then just accept it and avoid those things.

I love that you don't mind looking more dressed up and colorful than the women around you. I hope that you'll be able to invest in your everyday clothes so that you can feel happy in your real life, not just for special occasions that require dressing up. I can't wait to hear about your *basics* (those things you've always had a version of) and how they define your style. Good stuff Celia, thank you!

Celia, I love this post! I joined YLF because I wanted to push my outfits into a more creative, interesting realm too. I hadn't expected how delightful, fun, smart and creative the community of women here is. It is amazing. One of the things I treasure most is how women talk about the evolution of their style. Learning the thought process behind an outfit or how others work on developing their style is so helpful to me. Your post is perfect because it really shows how style can be an outgrowth of caring for and honoring yourself and breaking free of the impulse to just hide in the middle of the pack. You are fabulous!

Disclaimer: long and very introspective.

Dear YLF,
This past few days I have been at home sick hence no WIW posts but before I had a whole month of outfits in which to ponder about my style and what I want from my clothes.
As I was saying in a recent thread from Una I always loved clothes for their own sake, and always enjoyed looking at magazines and how to's about dressing.I don't think I had bad taste but there was a clear disconnection between me and my clothes.
For some strange reason(and this is not necessarily a compliment on my person) I cannot seem to fade into the background. Whenever I tried to be that low profile, sweet person, dressed in calmer hues, people would still noticed me, I just came across as frumpy.
After I had DD getting a hold on who I am and what image do I want to project became a way of survival in my SAHM world.
I owe a world of gratitude to Angie(and Greg) for this blog and this forum. In the old metaphor Angie really teach us how to fish instead of just giving us the fish.
And being able to have people , stylish and wonderful intelligent women themselves, give their opinions and advice has broaden the way I see fashion and individual style.

So what are my conclusions?

-I wanna be perceived as creative and fun. This was missing from my previous way of dressing and it was a serious disconnection between my personality and my clothing.Mother nature gave me a saintly look(even more when I was a teenager) and people tended to think that I could only do what was proper and dull, which is ok for a certain type of work but not when you interact with people in your everyday life.

-I am the most dress up SAHM in DD activities and that is totally ok with me.When I take DD to her activities I am almost sure that people think that I work outside of home, and that is perfectly fine. I prefer that to be frumpy (see 3rd paragraph).

-I am not afraid to wear color anymore. If it is a color that suits me and makes me memorable I am also fine with it.

-I get a kick out of using wardrobe capsules. Having some kind of capsule wardrobe per week and mix and match within it works for me.

-The line between what I wear in my every day life and on more dressier occasions needs to be more defined.Usually I would downgrade dressier clothes for everyday dressing when they got old but that was no fun. I need to have decent everyday life and a totally different set of clothes for dressier occasions. Some may overlap and this is something I have to work on.

-There are items that have always been in my wardrobe in one version or other, and those might be the defining items of my style. I also will work on this and present my results to you.

And that it's all folks. Sorry for the rambling and if you read all of this you are indeed very gracious.

Thank you for being there.
