@Carol Thanks! Maybe I'll take a photo of all my scarves together someday - when I'm feeling less lazy about laundry, perhaps

Jaime, we will welcome you to team scarf with open arms whenever you are ready! I bet you have a stunning collection!

Jenni -- How fortunate you had such a beautiful scarf at the ready when you needed it! You look absolutely lovely!!!

Joy -- high five to my fellow crazy scarf lady!

Zaeobi - that sounds like a great scarf project. I just adore your colour palette!!! And thanks for the tip about the magnets!

Angie - I LOVE your scarf collection, and how fun that some of them actually have matching tops!! To use Zaeobi's term, scarves are the perfect complement bridge (although maybe not the same way?) for me right now.

Jules -- good Zoom trick! I keep saying I'm going to stop purchasing, but I slip from time to time. :-)

Stag -- I'd say my interest in wearing scarves indoors is mostly driven by the pandemic. I've never worn a scarf as part of an outfit around home -- it's purely something I do for the office or maybe out for an evening. No office. No outings. No scarves. With that said, there was a period where I had started to use them to hide behind, as well. But I was happily rocking scarves with outfits when I was a size six.

Your question about the modifier is up for interpretation, I suppose!! I was thinking it modified 'lady'. But the reader is free to apply it to scarf, too!!

So many pretty patterns! Could it be that losing weight is part of why you aren’t so interested in wearing them?
Zaeobi, interesting point about bookending.
Carol, im not sure if “crazy” is modifying “scarves” or “lady”, but both are awesome

I love seeing everyone’s collections! And I also love a good scarf, but am at the point where I need to be choosy in my purchasing. I have recently found them useful for pulling together a quick zoom-appropriate ‘home office’ look. I rarely need to turn on my camera and my team is very casual but if presenting to another team or meeting with a higher up on short notice as I did last week, I find a scarf quickly elevates (or just covers) my old tee shirt and cardigan without needing to pull out a blouse, earrings etc.

YES, this is a scarf capsule, and you have a splendid one, CarolS!

YES to pulling outfits together, and adding personality to outerwear with scarves!

YES to creating complements with patterned scarves that pick up the colours in a complement.

YES to pattern mixing with scarves!

YES to having several in various weights to work with said weather.

I love scarves! In Spring and Summer, I wear linen and cotton scarves. In cold weather I wear cashmere and merino. Most are solid. Some of the patterned ones have tops to match. Here is my assortment:

Also I think I've mentioned this before, but personally I've found 'double magnets' to be absolute game changers when it comes to wearing delicate scarves for everyday occasions. I don't need to worry about snagging precious silk with pins or brooches - a magnet on either side will secure the scarf so that it doesn't slide about, but it's still easily removable at the end of the day (it leaves no marks).

Would highly recommend for anyone who loves their scarves in theory but doesn't wear them as much as they would like in reality because they find them to be 'too fussy'.

Scarves have always been a huge % of my wardrobe because I used to wear them everyday (as headscarves). Mine are therefore mostly long rectangles (+ some big squares), to be able to cover the head (got rid of all my skinny small ones a while back). I have them arranged into 3 rainbows, of solids, patterns & thicker scarves (I'm working on having orange, yellow, moss green, emerald, teal, purple, chocolate brown & cream scarves in each of the 3 categories)!

Have just realised from this thread the impact these scarves have had on my other complement items though - since they would cover my head, they would act like 'pseudo hair'. Meaning my 'bookend' items (like shoes & bags) were all over the place in terms of colour value. Now that I use my scarves also as neck coverings, it's guided me towards my current Chocolate Complement (as mentioned on MaryBeth's thread) to better work with my dark hair.

Thanks for prompting this reflection that my scarves have been acting as a 'complement bridge', if that makes sense

It sounds like you have a nice capsule of scarves that you can pull from to make complements with a variety of shoes… hehe I made a sentence with both ‘complement’ and ‘capsule’ ;)

I think I dress around scarves when I wear them… they’re statements for me…

I definitely use scarves as an easy way to pull outfit together and add texture or pattern to a plain outfit. Right now I am looking for a scarf to pull navy blue and yellow green together. I also Ike them to mix patterns or create modern sweater twin sets. I wear them all year round, casually and to dress up, for warmth and cooling. Another use for scarves is a table runner, especially for holidays.

No. I don’t use scarves to pull an outfit together. I still have a drawerful mainly because of ones I have been gifted over the decades and because of buying the occasional one that was “so pretty” until I realised I had to stop. Haven’t bought any for years.
I use earrings and shoes to pull outfits together.
One of my “so pretty” purchases from years ago, though, which had previously never been worn, became the wrap for the “tea ceremony” in the Buddhist temple in Vietnam for my daughter’s wedding. So at least one got some use!

As one might suspect, I have a huge second hand scarf collection. Mostly silk, a few designer, very pretty, and rarely worn. But worn more than ever lately because I still run cold even 5+ years post menopause and I find a silk scarf around my neck does help. When I become more of a scarf person I am ready!

Well , I rescued a fluffy plaid wooly blanket scarf and put it across the back of my reading chair . Looks quite fancy ;). One less textile going into the donation bag . There *is* teal in the scarf which doesn’t show up well in this lighting .

Happy to help, Lisa. I seriously do not step out the door without a heavy scarf in this weather, but I do agree they can be annoying and hot once you get indoors. Haven't had a problem with crossbody straps, though.

I have a lovely Aritzia blanket scarf that was gifted to me several years ago and I've never worn it. In fact, it is draped across the back of a chair in my TV room because I like the colour and pattern!

@ Carol - gotcha! Warmth trumps fashion/style until April! Today I wore wool socks and my new Blundstones (second wear) but at the end of a two hour walk my toes were a little cold. Would have been better off with the fleece lined boots, but hey! I’m ‘team wear’ when it comes to new stuff!

When I wear one of my silk scarves, I tie is high and around my neck, like a turtleneck, vs letting it hang loose or crossed over my chest. It provides the right amount of extra warmth where I need it most.

Winter weight scarves are a no-brainer in our cold weather, but I am interested to see if or how much I wear the lighter weight scarves in the future. I'm far less about embellishment for the sake of embellishment these days, and that's what the lighter scarves were used for in the not so distant past.

You’ve inspired me to go through my scarf collection today . I just finished cleaning out the coat closet - vacuuming , sorting , etc. 3 pair of boots out into the trash between DD and I . I bought a new down parka today , which precipitated all of this , and also got me thinking about winter accessories . I own a LOT of scarves , hats and mitts , but I honestly don’t wear scarves much at all anymore . I find them hot and a nuisance , really . Since I switched to wearing my purses x-body style , I find scarves get caught , tangled and the silk ones snagged too easily in purse strap buckles , seatbelts , etc etc. The whole mess makes me feel messy and unpolished . I’m with Irina in preferring simpler cashmere or merino flat knit or woven scarves when I’m going to wear one at all. Back in the era of dressing up for work or plays , concerts , symphonies etc , a print silky scarf used to add a dressy touch to a winter coat but that all feels dated and foreign now - to me . Stressing that I don’t care what anyone else wants to wear - just me here . I also have a few of those fluffy blanket scarves that I don’t even understand why I own other than for their cozy appeal . Another look I’m not interested in and need to edit out of my collection . I actually have never worn any of the ones I own ! Thanks for giving me yet one more job to do today

Gorgeous scarves! That's definitely a scarf capsule, and you are inspiring me to get more of my own into Finds. I have quite a lot also. Those that are in Finds are below, but there are several more.

The first four of mine are wintery outdoor scarves (that's a category where I have more, not pictured.) The blue infinity is so much fun -- it was a gift from Ms. Mary back when we did Secret Santas.

The paisley and leopard are lightweight wool mixes that work well in cool fall and winter as indoor neck warmers. The two large silk squares play a similar role -- they work to tie outfits together.

The red Sandwich scarf, the large square H&M scarf and the Lord & Taylor scarf are transitional spring/ fall wear mostly.

And the red, grey, and gingham, along with the butterfly patterned scarf and mostly late spring/ summer wear for me.

Since my key neutrals are ink/navy/denim, white, grey and my "pop" colours are red, cobalt, fuchsia, magenta, it's pretty easy to see how these work to create complements. In summer, my white, silver, hibiscus red, and blue footwear works with the summer scarves and I also have white, red, silver, cobalt bags. In fall/ winter, I have a burgundy bag, a pewter bag, and a pale grey bag as well as a dressier red bag, and navy, red, black, black & white, and silver footwear to choose from (and sometimes grey). In spring and fall I have silver/ pewter, red footwear (and sometimes blue, just not now.)

Scarves have been a true mainstay of my style for years, but with the pandemic and perhaps with other style shifts, I'm not feeling them as much and now search in vain for other ways to make "outfits" out of a few simple casual pieces. I do find scarves truly useful in changeable weather.

Lovely scarves, Carla!

I don't feel I have to match my black boots to my coat. I do match them to my pants as a rule -- I like the column of colour and frankly, my warm winter pants are black.

The black boots are my only warm winter boot, so I do tend to look for accessories with black in them. (The unlined Docs are no match for real winter weather, so won't likely see much wear now until spring. They're not the most comfortable, so tend also to be reserved for novelty use -- ie going out for lunch, not a lot of walking involved. I didn't keep the light-coloured Blundstones as I just wasn't convinced I liked that pinky beige. They wouldn't be a snow boot option in any case.)

For yesterday's big outing to the dentist, I wore black ponte pants, my tall black boots, black and white striped tneck under a black zippered knit jacket with a white stripe down the sleeve. For outerwear, I added my burgundy puffer, a fluffy leopard scarf, and black gloves. I could have gone with cognac gloves, but the black were just a bit warmer. (I've been enjoying the mix of cognac and burgundy).

It's a device that helps me incorporate colour within the boundaries of what I have available!

Extensive scarf collection you have there! I see 7 with leopard print, 9-10 with yellow in the pattern, and 5 paisley. The red plaid stands out as an outlier with its linear pattern and red colour. Why do you feel compelled to match your black dressy boots and winter coat? I’d do your yellow boots with any of the scarves containing yellow, or the white ones, or the brown ones? The yellow and white boots in particular are dressy-ish. You can book end with the scarves and a hat (if you wear one.)

My entire scarf collection is shown in finds below. 3 silk scarves, 2 cotton (warm weather only ones) and a pashmina I don’t wear much these days but is perfect for travel. I’m toying with adding a big blanket scarf, but am quite slow about coming to a decision. At the moment I’m doing the minimalist thing of doing my coat up to the neck, and just wearing a beanie, but I do use the top 3 scarves on days when I feel like wearing my red or light blue beret, since it repeats the colour and helps pull the outfit together.

I've always been a magpie for a pretty scarf, Irina, and thankfully it's a practical formula that works for me - at least in the cold months.

JAileen -- exactly! The scarf can make the difference between throwing on a jacket and pulling together what will pass for an outfit!

Approprio -- I haven't been feeling the nice silk scarves so much anymore either -- although I still am drawn to them! I'll see what the mood and need are this spring. But somehow I expect that I won't part with many of these in a hurry -- they're just too handy in the right situation.

That is a lovely collection of scarves you have there. I have some nice ones here too. Not quite as many though.

I don’t feel as “easy” with a fine silk square as I used to. Not sure why. I shall enjoy these vicariously while I think about it.

What a nice collection of scarves! I have quite a few myself.

I wore a patterned scarf yesterday. I was mostly at home wearing my usual grey, and I needed to go out. I exchanged my charcoal fleece vest for a green down jacket and a polka dot scarf and suddenly I had what passes for a nice outfit in this area. :)

What a great collection of scarves! Beautiful!
I mostly moved away from patterned scarves, use only two in thin merino for fall/spring. Don’t feel it right now but glad it works well for you.

I feel like I should at least try to weigh in on Mary Beth's complement challenge since she so generously attributed the inspiration to my writing about building out my complements this year.

January has truly been a month of laying low -- yesterday was my first outing since getting my booster shot on Christmas Eve, and it was a trip to the dentist followed by a stop at the grocery store and pharmacy for antibiotics (awful infection, horribly swollen jaw on one side, thankful for face masks!). The main point here being that I haven't exactly been dressing or shopping for the last few weeks.

I have been thinking about it a bit, though, and started by refreshing myself on the way Angie defines a complement: "A complement is a small group of accessories and footwear that match in colour, pattern or vibe, and can be worn together."

I added a few pieces of more colourful outerwear to my wardrobe this winter, but, since my only dressy-ish winter boots are black, I rely on a bit of a formula (a black complement?) to pull a winter "going out in public" look together:

Black ponte pants.

Black boots

Black bag

Often a black sweater, but this can vary

Black or coloured outerwear

PATTERNED SCARF

Sometimes gloves or mittens that coordinate with the scarf

Unless going to the office (which I have not done in almost two years now), or to visit in someone's home (also still rare to non-existent in my world lately), outerwear IS the outfit for almost three of our four seasons.

So, how to get variety and interest in said outfit without breaking the bank or overflowing the closets with heavy coats? SCARVES.

I don't have a cream complement per Angie's description, but I have scarves with cream. Likewise with camel/cognac, orange, green, burgundy, brown, blush, etc...

Scarves are practical in our climate for many months of the year -- although I do find them more challenging in spring and fall since menopause.

I've now logged most of my scarves in finds -- taking pictures mostly of the pattern and colour rather than trying to capture the whole thing. There are a lot of them!

Is this a scarf capsule? And does each scarf have the ability to belong to two or three different complements? Most are patterned. I think two are solid -- one green and one off-white.

Many of these scarves have black into them, which helps tie in my ubiquitous black bag and shoe formula.

Several complement my cognac and bronze sneakers for spring and fall. And some complement my yellow Docs and allow me to mix them easily with earthier colours.

My scarves fall into a few different categories. Warm, heavy scarves for deep winter. Mid-weight scarves more suited for spring or fall. And light scarves for warm spring/fall and for wear as part of an indoor outfit -- although these haven't gotten any use at all the last few years. I don't wear scarves around home.

There are a few vintage /sentimental scarves in the mix below. I believe the green scarf with coral paisley belonged to my grandfather. The green swirly one and the one with orange, green, and brown flowers belonged to my mom in the 70's. I've never really worn them, but have always liked them. Maybe their time in my wardrobe will come. There's a brown silk scarf with beautiful shades of coral and teal that my late MIL brought to me from Italy.

With this formula and a few new additions I think I will be fairly well equipped to navigate this spring.

Figuring out complements for summer dressing is going to be the harder part. That's where I probably will need the most new purchases this year -- tops, bottoms, sandals, and maybe a bag that's not black. ;-)

As Scarlett O'Hara would say, "I'll think about that tomorrow...."

If you made it this far, thanks for indulging me!

Am I alone in my love of and reliance on the patterned scarf? Do you use scarves to tie an outfit together?
