Wow. Some great suggestions here. I am going to have a thorough look at all of them. Nice to know I am not alone with shoe constraints too!

It is a tricky one isn't it!!

I have been considering Frankie4 as an option - they sound such a good shoe company and so comfortable.

Rollies have good lace ups - I only have one pair but I do like them and am considering a second pair of lace ups. I also have some slides of theirs.

I am very interested in this thread because I have pretty much the same constraints as you, and finding shoes that look good with dresses but aren't sandals or boots is always a struggle. No specific suggestions, but the two Finds I've added here are styles that have worked for me. The purple ones are on order (ELF Bali), not received yet, but years ago I had a very similar pair that I wore into the ground. The criss-cross straps hold your foot in place really securely. The black/silver pair (Rieker) are also secure, but look reasonably dressy to me. Good luck!

Ann, I like the ones that Lucy linked to. Those look promising. I understand your need for a strap. I need that, too, the way my feet / heels are shaped. I've never had a loafer that would stay on.

I don't know if Wittner will fit you but that might be an option?

May I suggest the Clarks 'Pure Tone' range? If it helps, I have high volume feet (with an instep prone to swelling), high arches, a medium-to-wide toebox front but a narrow heel, yet I find that these shoes fit me well. (I sprayed the underside of the front the first couple of times with a leather stretcher, just to ensure the vamp will accommodate my varying foot height, but they're good both with & without socks now).

I believe they come in a wide variety of colours (most of them matte leather, though I have the burgundy corduroy & metallic bronze versions) & they're kind of like a cross between a D'orsay flat & a sleek loafer - they give that flattering 'cut out' effect without actually having a low vamp. So not only could they be good with both skirts & trousers, you wouldn't have to worry about the colour of your hoisery either!

Only possible caveat is that the more minimalist design means they may not be able to accommodate orthotics, but the insole is already padded so hopefully that would be enough for you (Clark's is known for making comfortable shoes, after all).

Liz, I would probably wear sheer nude hose. I also like black opaques but tend to wear them with boots.

Will you be wearing them with bare legs, dark opaque tights, or dark or light sheer tights? That's always a deal-breaker question for me with winter shoes that I want to wear with dresses. So many of the shoes I'm drawn to don't look right worn with dark opaque tights and (realistically) I don't wear anything else in the winter with dresses.

Frankie4 has a couple of options. These are a Brisbane based brand - I am not sure how well known they are in other parts of AUstralia. They are designed by a podiatrist and basically have built in orthotics.

https://frankie4.com.au/collec.....7005986929

https://frankie4.com.au/collec.....8783487089

I think any of these would work well with skirts. I have the same problem with shoes falling off, I need these kinds of straps across my foot otherwise I walk right out of them!

I don't have any of these models, but I have sandals, and they have worn well so far.

The shoes you have linked to look very casual. It is hard to find dressy flats that are not ballet flats. Something in a patent leather or suede or metallic may look more dressy. Any of my most comfortable dressy flats are off brands that surprised me. One is a black with black patent detail DV ankle strap. You might look at animal prints.

Thanks ladies for your detailed responses. Just a quick response toe questions.
I just can't wear ballet shoes. I love how they look and wish I could but have shallow heels
I do wear orthotics, though not all the time.
Not committed to wedges, but not sure about heels with any taper.
I like the idea of Oxfords.
A high vamp loafer could work.

Comfortable but stylish shoes for skirts and dresses has always been the hardest combination for me too.

I don’t have a specific shoe find right now but sone things to look for might be:
-Separate heel rather than a wedge- even on a low heel I think tgat looks more dressy and stylish M- buckle strap, no Velcro
- maybe search “ ankle strap flats” and look for some with more rounded toe for bett comfort. Ankle strap does shorten the legline but sometimes search brings up more modern styles, more delicate straps.
I also like above suggestions for higher vamped loafers or maybe a heeled ( low) oxford. It can take some getting used to these for dresses because I think they don’t look as good on me as on the models (ha) but the idea in shoe search might be, not a comfort- shoe rendition- imitation of a pump or strapped shoe that looks neither here nor there, but a shoe style that is comfortable in its modern interpretation and incorporation into the outfit.

Having said that... shoes are hard! Sneakers with dresses kind of fixed that for some situations, but most workplaces don’t allow that. So, best of luck!

Anne do you wear orthotics? As Jenni mentions, the styles you have shown, are less trendy than what I would pick for you, but that said, they would be orthotic friendly.

Personally I wear ballet flats (like in Finds) and pumps, but that does not seem to be a style that appeals to you. Hobbs Shoes is a source of nice shoes, but less orthotic friendly. Ecco shoes are available at Stride Shoe stores and have the comfort factor. Stride also sell Clarks and Ziera, so specialise in comfy and practical shoes.

I recently bought my midnight blue pumps (in Finds) from Scarpers in Subiaco. They are low heeled and very comfy.

Hi Anne are you sure all loafers would fall off? Loafers can have a really high vamp?
I’m sorry but I feel you are too attractive for the 3 pairs you have linked to? I do understand you need practical, but sharper looking that what you have linked to might be possible I hope. It sounds kind of back-handed but I am actually trying to pay you a compliment I guess, sorry for not liking these pairs. Have you tried Styletread?

I have one big purchase of the year left. I want some comfortable dress flats to wear at work.
Required
-Not boots. I already have black heeled knee boots and ankle boots
-comfortable
- needs a high vamp or strap otherwise will not stay on. So no ballet flats or loafers
-Dark coloured
- needs to work with dresses and skirts
- not patent
-I like a one to 1.5 inch sturdy heel

I have found a few possible ones - links below. Doesn't have to be Mary Jane though, that is just what I have found so far.
