The Cat, you and I have the same thoughts about marks inside shoes. We must've been writing at the same time.
I'm embarrassed to see in these pix how poorly I've cared for my shoes, and am gearing up for an assault with leather cleaner, polish, etc. The closest I come to shoe care most of the time is bringing home those shoe wipes from hotels and using them before special occasions. I've got to step it up! I don't store clothing that's been worn without washing it. (I have hooks where I hang things I wear frequently that I can wear again before I wash them). I should make a habit of going over shoes before putting them away as well.

Jenni NZ, thanks for your comment and pictures. Interesting that the footbed marks that could make a shoe look old (when there isn't a foot covering them) have so little relation to the actual number of times a shoe has been worn.
The red shoes, btw, took themselves out of the running during my "trial wear" with them last night.
The blush ones are indeed the ones I was calling Petunia Pigs. Warner Bros Cartoons must not be as universal as I thought. Here is the character (and she doesn't even have those shoes anyway).
I probably should not have bothered including the platforms because you're right, they're costume material for me.
The cream colored pumps are the oldest in the batch. They have been worn so few times that it is easy to let them go.
White shoes are tricky. Here is another look at the white woven loafers and the white slides. Structurally, they are in good shape. I wonder if I could use a toothbrush on the weave. If anything, i think the slides could loosen up a little more and let my feet slide further forwards. But dangling them from my toes would show the footbeds.

I don't think marks/discolourations INSIDE the shoes matter much, at least as long as they are not visible when you are actually wearing the shoes, and provided you are keeping your shoes on. Most people will never see the inside of your shoes.

By the way, some marks (inside as well as outside shoes) are easily removed by a gentle rub with a moisturized microfibre cloth and a drop of liquid soap.

I have taken some pics to illustrate. Fave oldest summer sandals are the red ones 2009, glued several times but I am unable to find any new red ones I like as much. Cost unsure, will guess $ 70 or maybe $ 50 in 2009, were on sale. Wears uncertain I have tracked to 21, could be more. Don't have those toes/foot marks and I don't think look dated.
Fave 2013 orange sandals do look old to me cause of those marks. Look better on. Cost $100, 25 wears. Nursed them through this past summer and I feel they should go. But sad! Maybe will wear still this coming summer.
The natural replacement for the orange are the 2015 tan ones, pic 3. But embarrassed to say have only been worn 3 times. And yet already showing those feet marks. They were bought to look 70s inspired but maybe I find them boring somehow? Perhaps a mistake. Just to show you examples of styles and wear.

Now I will try with these shoes. I am with Joy that a lot of these look too worn. I dislike the look of sandals where you can see the feet and toe discolourations. That may be a weird quirk of mine, I only have one pair left like that, orange sandals I can't find similar for. It looks dirty to me. Sorry!
So that would rule out the white slides middle of 7 and the red sandals in 8. I also wonder, like Anne, if the white slides are getting floppy, a second reason to ditch them. The "tall white ones" (platforms) will only be OK to keep if you have cleaned off what looks like a chip off them. I see they are more for a specific purpose, Halloween costume?! So if clean up OK, keep for that ( or pole dancing). The first white loafers on the left of the white shoes pic look a bit dirty and floppy. "Petunia Pig" ( what on earth is that?) are going you say, I assume they are the blush pink ones.
Cream- coloured Life Strides pumps- look dated to me somehow.
That might do for this round. I may need to do a shoe post of my own!

I vote for everything that clearly doesn't fit, set aside together for now. Then do pics of what does. So *we* can dive straight into playing around with style. I think that will make it easier to go through the other stuff. Do try-on rounds by summer. Do five pics at a time... so I can entertain myself on my breaks

Maybe I should look at the clothing that way too. Instead of one big weedout when I've got my body how I want it be, to set up what to wear here and in the future, i should probably do multiple iterations.

First, a huge try-on to figure out my basic style, weed out things that clearly won't work, and set up holding zones:
1. a small one to tuck away things I'm not sure about
2. things I'm looking forward to wearing when I've reshaped my body more, probably still in that big suitcase, pulling out just a couple things at a time to tempt myself into working out
3. clothes I envision wearing for work in a place with four seasons, displayed someplace that I see them regularly, taunting me to get to work, the change isn't going to happen on its own.

Continue to pull things out of the "too small" case and try them on when appropriate, review/refine my style either ongoing or every month.

Big review whenever I clear a big hurdle, like a job in my career field or a move.

Does that make sense? I know it's unusual to have the holding zone where you can see it, which is why I came up with my "Zone of Aspiration" idea. It fits with my personality, which is to play up--be on the team with kids a year older than me (or when I was just past 40, with "kids" 10-15 years younger than me), play against the tennis partner who I know can beat me, so every point I score is worth a victory dance, talk interviewers into hiring me for positions I don't know how to do yet. That's how I work. If I believe I can do it, I act on it and make myself do it. Otherwise I'm just stifled and frustrated.

What do you think? Anybody want to see some blouses?

What should I do about stuff that's clearly too small? Lay it out/hang it up and take pictures that way?

Jenn, that sounds perfect for me. I was recently pondering exactly that question, thinking I was coming up with some great profound conundrum/statement. Now you're telling me that Angie is miles ahead of me and already wrote about that? Dang that woman is good! This has happened countless times in just a few weeks.

Since both your personal style and your lifestyle are still up in the air, I think it's a great idea to just focus on fit and condition. Angie had a blog post a while back about how what's "dated" for one person might still work well for another, so that might be a criterion you have to come back for.

I apparently haven't always taken care of my shoes as well as I thought. I'll polish those up and see how I look. The fact that I don't have any polish confirms that nope, I'm still not great at taking care of things. The "tall" ones--I don't remember what we did exactly, but I must've had one heck of a good time. They had grass and something sticky in them. All better now.

As for whether my style is retro--probably. I like to be playful and have things not be quite what they seem. So modest was always my sexy (I thought that was like Marion the librarian, until I watched the movie again and was shocked at how Prof Hill stalks and harasses her!) Pretty, broken by something RATE. Being knowingly old-fashioned with a wink somehow fits in there for me. Do you see what I mean?

This is a dress I want to wear maybe with the purple shoes or with booties and a belt. The one I have is not as tight on me as this. What do you think?
My favorite booties just died. They were dark brown, with shiny brass hooks for the laces. They could be worn with the cuff up around the ankle or folded down so they looked like old-fashioned shoes. They had been resoled, but the upper had now come off the upper in an irreparable way. They would've been my choice to wear with this dress.

The thing about the datedness (not talking worn out/deterioration here), I really feel your eventual style goals will determine a lot. With this set, you have variety to play with.

So like pic 2, round toe shoes like this are dated - except when they aren't! If you have a retro or steampunk or arty element to your style, these could be a boon.

Oh, yeah--the shoes! I like your answer, Rachylou. Jenn probably pointed me to the most important thing for now--put every pair on, and that knocked some out. But still, if some look way out of date, I'd rather hear it here.

Rachylou, my son, poor child, thought I was different. Other women can fuss over how they look, but not his mama! I showed him several YLF posts that have impressed me with just how supportive this community is. Between that and reminding him that I let him do TF2, an online video game, to work on team work and being a good sport, I may have won him over. Or not. I'd like him to see the method in my madness, but even if he doesn't, I'm still the mom.

Anne, You're always so helpful. They are just shoes, right? It's crazy how I can imbue them with all the meaning and emotion.

Having recently worked to reduce my wardrobe by a third for a move. I would not keep the shoes in photos 6-9 as dated or looking too worn, but I am just going by the photos. Remember that shoes disintegrate if you keep them, even if you don't wear them. I had unworn athletic sneakers new in the box that had rubber soles that crumbled at the touch. They also break down in ways that make them uncomfortable. If they are still valuable to you and comfortable, keep them for now. Foot sizes do change with weight gain in or loss. At least for me they did, but bones change with pregnancy and spread. My feet did not go back to my pre-baby size even with considerable weight loss... Just less padding.
Please do not take this as being critical. You asked, so I am just voicing one opinion. In the end, the choice is yours. I find that it is pretty easy to find replacements even at thrift or consignment stores or deep discounts. My question to myself was, " if I didn't have this what would I wear instead?"

I'm in trouble if that's too many shoes, lol. Fashionintern, it may be time to have that terribly awkward talk with your son about the facts of life - about women and shoes! Lol.

Because I'm gonna tell you, I think you should keep them all for now (except those that don't fit and are uncomfortable). They all fill different roles, except maybe the sandals. But you need sandal options considering your current environs.

That green dress with the boots is a pretty punk look.

Just chiming in to say that I'll have no capacity to look at this for at least 8 hours, and responding to this type of post is not a strength of mine (I'm too indecisive) Hoping some others will join in.

Yeesh, that's a very long post now that I've added comments on how the shoes fit my feet!

The next step--do they fit my lifestyle--is a bit trickier because of the way I want to use the holding zone to beckon me to keep moving forward. That strategy has worked with the weight loss, so I have high hopes that it can work here too.

Right now, Petunia Pig is out, the fabric flats are going for additional testing, the black slides are already in the holding bin with those pants, and the platforms and athletic shoes are with the rest of my kit. The question to ask now is which of the remaining shoes are stylish and in good enough shape to wear.

In a few weeks, the question to ask will be which of these goes with the style that develops as I go through my closet.

And then in December or next summer, when I'm starting a new job or packing things up to move, there will be one more wardrobe review in light of new info re where we are going.

Jenn, very good point! I'll go try them on, and will edit the first post to include notes on fit.
