Columbine offers a good example. Also, sometimes our eyes deceive us -- it may have looked better than you think!

It's hard to tell without a picture. Maybe the proportions were off, i.e., maybe the sweater was too long, or maybe the dress hem wasn't at the optimal height, or maybe the footwear contrasted too much. I find it easier to do say, a navy column of color, with trousers and top rather than a dress. (An a-line ankle length skirt can give the column effect too, but I really don't see people wearing those lately). If the dress stops at the knee then I think sometimes you lose the column effect. Hopefully someone else chimes in with more helpful information.

I would like clarification on the 'column of color' strategy for apple shapes. I totally see how the slimming effect works for lighter/brighter 'columns' under a darker jacket or sweater, but what about the reverse? Yesterday I wore a dark teal dress with a lighter grey sweater and it looked fine, but didn't quite have the slimming effect I was hoping for. Thoughts?
