What Suz says about not getting too strict about your colors is so true. I had mine done years ago yet, from the beginning knew some were off. They are a great starting place and force one to pay attention to shades of color. Some among them will probably be your very best, others just so-so.

I don't really pay a lot of attention to the little colour wallet my analyst gave me. It turned out I was already naturally gravitating to my better colours (on the whole).

So when I shop, I don't get too fussed about the extreme niceties of it all, as in "is this a soft summer blue or a true summer blue?" I take a look and see if I like it and think it will work with my other stuff. ;)

On the other hand, I do exercise some judgement. That's one reason I left the GAP pink moto alone. It looked too vivid a fuchsia for me -- it was a "winter" fuchsia.

And some colours, I can see instantly, are too clear for me. It helps if there is a shot of grey in it, whatever it is. On me (probably on you, too) just about ANY blue will work well. I resisted blue for years (apart from denim) for all kinds of reasons, but I have come to embrace and love it.

If you go on 12 Blueprints she does some amazingly detailed and fascinating and useful analyses, but at the same time, there is obviously wiggle room. If you look at the palettes you showed here, some of them don't include colours that appear in others, and the tones are all slightly different. Oh -- and only one includes anything like radiant orchid....yet that one is clearly a good colour for me! Anyway, you get my point. This is an art, not a science.

Another point to keep in mind: Just as Angie talks about the ways we might forego figure flattery occasionally in order to give a look a little edge, so might we choose colours or contrast levels that aren't our "best" once in a while, for specific reasons.

I had mine done about twenty years ago but was never able to put it into practice. I looked at my swatch and then I think I bought the wrong shade of it for my type. Good luck!

Thanks, everyone, for the responses. I'm sure I'll be posting LOTS more about colour this year. I can already tell that this analysis was a very worthwhile investment. Two of my goals for the year are to pare down and refine my wardrobe, and develop a consistent, mix and match-able palette. I now have the clarity and foundation to get started.

Ceit and Raisin, you both wear cool tones so well, I wouldn't be surprised if you were some kind of summer or winter, but what do I know? ;) You seem to wear black particularly well, Raisin, which I think is a winter colour.

Suz, what wealth of ideas! Thank you. I'll be looking at your outfits with a whole new eye now that I know I can wear the same colours as you. And, you know, freelance colour analyst sounds like a great side job for a writer.

torontogirl, scarves will definitely be key transition pieces, I think. Most of my existing scarves were not in my best colours, but I have a few good ones to work with, and they're always an easy thing to shop for since fit is never an issue ;)

K, Sveta, Gigi, and Eliza, thank you for the affirmation; I appreciate it.

Ariadne, I'm so glad you were able to get this done. And it was not selfish! If we need to give ourselves to our families, we need to have something to give...which means we need to do things that nurture ourselves. When we nurture ourselves, then we are "tanked up" to give ourselves to others. :^)

So glad you are happy with your analysis and your palette! I love this stuff. Sounds like you had a great experience.

I agree with Suz' comments about black - I too am some sort of Summer, either Cool or Soft, and I still wear. It's probably not my best, but whatever, I love it. If you do too, don't feel you have to purge it completely. Scarves can be a great solution here, just add a pop of the right color by your face and Bob's your uncle!

Thanks for sharing your experience and I hope you will share more of your color journey on here! Personally, the color threads are always my fave

So fab!! And of course I feel personally validated! I knew we were "colour sisters!"

Maybe I can have a second career as a colour analyst? :)

Mind you -- your youthful bright skin (and hair colour) do allow you to stray a bit outside the parameters, in my opinion. For example, I think you looked surprisingly great in that coral-ish red jacket you tried at H&M when we were together. ETA: maybe it was "watermelon" red? Possible. I know that particular red is just a touch on the warm side for me, personally, at my age (now I wear cranberry so much better and can just barely wear a true red) -- but in my 20s and 30s I wore pretty much any red very well.

Your colouring reminds me a lot of my own when I was your age, actually. I never had freckles and my eyes are more blue-grey, but in other respects it is quite similar -- we both have hair that can swing either way (cool or warm) and we both look good as redheads (if the red is the right shade) although we're naturally more on the ashy blonde side.

Similarly, my analyst was surprised to note that a couple of "spring" colours also worked well on me. In my case, not coral, but most of the bright turquoises that you can find on gear clothes and are part of true spring or winter's palette. Technically, they're a bit strong, but in the right circumstances they seem surprisingly good.

(I think they'd look great on you, too.)

Now - when it comes to black...I have made peace with continuing to wear it. And I actually think the RIGHT black works really well. Charcoal might be better...ink better still...or navy, or taupe....but the truth is, I mostly wear black WITH those neutrals.

So I sort of think of black as like bright turquoise, for me. Potentially too strong and draining, DEFINITELY too strong and draining if worn exclusively on its own -- but good if used judiciously, and not necessary to rule out. In other words, I am keeping a couple of black tops and a black jacket in my rotation. As for black bottoms, why the heck not? They work with my "true" neutrals!

Ariadne, I am SO glad you invested this time in yourself. And I can't wait until the day when we can go lunching and shopping together again!

I finally had my long-awaited colour analysis appointment on Saturday. This week has been packed to the gills with the minutiae of mom/household/work stuff, plus I spent last night in the ER with my croupy toddler, so this is the first chance I've had to string a few sentences together.

It was such a wonderful experience. Marjorie, who did my analysis, is warm and professional and lovely to work with. She told me later that she suspected I'd be a Soft Summer, but it quickly became clear I'm actually a True Summer. Suz, who's met me in person, suggsted that in this thread, and she was right. Here's what I wrote to Marj afterwards:

"It feels so fun and freeing to have my colours figured out. In some ways I was surprised by the result, but it makes perfect sense. So many of the colours are ones I've always been drawn to but wasn't sure about because they're often described as 'unflattering.' I see now that they're only unflattering on the people they're not suited for. What I like best of all is that they're the colours of my very own world, the natural landscape I love deeply and know intimately, the west coast--our grey skies, muted blue-green water, fresh rain-washed forests and cool cloudcover, pearly oyster and mussel shells, rhododendrons and lavender. In fact, I can see a sunset in my swatch book's pink, blue and grey out my window right now, behind some bare charcoal tree branches. I'm already feeling my ideas about fit, style and so on coalesce with these colours as context. I'm excited to see where it leads me."

I keep coming back to the word "soft," probably because for a lot of very personal reasons it's a word I've shied away from for many years, even though deep down I think it's truly one of my defining characteristics. I think a big part of my style journey this year will be about discovering how to embrace and incorporate softness and discover what that expression looks like for me (hint: I know it's NOT ruffles, lace, cotton candy and cameos).

I've included some sample True Summer palettes below. Note the absence of black, which currently forms about half my wardrobe. I hope to slowly replace most of them with the deep, hazy navies, purples, burgundies, greys, taupes and teals of my palette. I culled about half of my closet afterwards, which is something I've been planning to do for a long time. I have a bunch of stuff to take to consignment, and I'm hoping to post some of it here on Style Exhange, too. I can't afford to purge all my black items right now, so I'll definitely be looking for advice on ways to style them to make them work for me, and will probably put some of my limited "fun money" towards a few well-chosen pieces that will help with that.

On an even more personal level, I realized that a huge part of the pleasure of this experience was getting to spend a few hours doing something that was ALL ABOUT ME. It's a rare, rare occurance in this season of my life. Also, until recently, my mental health and self-esteem were in such a bad state that I wouldn't have ever considered giving myself the time and money to spend on something so self-oriented (I'm trying to avoid the negative connotations of the word 'selfish' here). The fact that I could not only talk about this idea with my DH in an unabashed way, and then set up the appointment, go through with it, and completely enjoy it speaks volumes about my progress in my life overall and particularly the past 6 months.

Maybe I need to reconsider that "Radiant Orchid" colour after all...
