Good luck with your shopping! Not much to add, other than to second the ideas to add color for tops and keep bottoms in solid colors. Also, accessories can add a lot to an otherwise basic items look. (ie, a plain t and jeans can really transform with 1-scarf, 2-statement necklace, 3-cardigan, etc etc)

Thanks Kate and Joy!

Kate, thank you so much for your detailed response! I start to have a more concrete idea after reading your post.

I think it's difficult for me to pick out only one or two colors. So perhaps your approach suits me better, but everyone is different.

I'm doing some back-to-school (new-to-college? I'm a freshman) clothes shopping today, hopefully will get some treasures!

After reading what Beth and Maya said while I was typing my response, I want to add that I wouldn't just buy one or two colors, I would spread it out between colors you love. If you can afford 5 knit t shirts, don't buy only red ones. Get red, royal blue, magenta, emerald green, and purple (for example). This will make your wardrobe feel a lot more colorful than just sticking to a couple of colors.

It seems like colors of like intensity work well together. So if you stick to brights you should be fine. You may want to wear neutrals (black, denim, grey, white..) bottoms and use your brights on top. One pair of jeans and one pair of black skinnies and maybe a denim skirt can be the backbone of your fall/winter wardrobe, working year round too. White jeans or other white bottom will help you feel summery combined with the brights.

I'm a grad student on a very limited budget, and have recently re-focused my wardrobe around an autumn color palette. I'm not quite done, but here's how I recommend starting:

I've found it's easiest to keep to neutrals on the bottom. So in the early stages (as a winter) keep to black, gray, and maybe navy pants and skirts, and black and gray shoes. These aren't near your face, and should go with most of what you wear up top.

Focus on getting some colors up near your face. There are a couple different approaches to this, depending on how many layers you usually wear, and what you already have. 1) If your top/shirt is always showing, focus on buying those in winter colors. If you wear knits this should be pretty cheap, and not too difficult. 2) If you usually have a jacket/sweater over your base layer(s), focus on buying colorful jackets and sweaters. 3) If you already have a substantial collection of neutral clothing that you love, focus on some chunky necklaces and/or scarves in your colors. This gets color by your face, can be quite inexpensive, and allows you to continue using the clothes you already have and love. Any combo of options 1, 2, and 3 works, just be careful to have some neutrals up top so you don't overdo it.

After you feel good about your selection of colorful clothes for your upper half and/or accessories, then I would get some colorful shoes that work with most of your upper-half colors. An outfit of entirely neutrals with just some colorful jewelry and colorful shoes is far from dull and can compliment your skin tone.

Finally, it really helped me to be ruthless about sticking to my color palette. A lot of YLFers follow less strict color palettes, but for me it really helped to stay to a palette where I know that almost everything in my wardrobe matches. I hate having items that only match one or two other things I own.

My original foundation colors are... black and white.

Still thinking about which specific color to add... But still, thanks Beth and Maya for your useful suggestions!

Any more advice?

If you have 3 colors you are tired of, just add a fourth one that works well with the three you've started with. Once you get tired of four, add a fifth. Keep adding. It's not as hard as it is made out to be.

Angie says red is a neutral, and I tend to agree. Could you add some red in your wardrobe? It goes with so much.

Another question from this fashion beginner. Sorry for not really being able to contribute to this forum since I'm just starting out.

As I've mentioned in YLF forum several times, I'm a college student on a tight budget. Most "fashion experts" advise that you buy clothes based on two or three foundation colors in order to coordinate with your whole wardrobe. I followed this piece of advice for some time, but I feel like I'm in a rut - I need more than colorful accessories. Bright colors make me look good.

But - with not much $$, how should I shop for colorful clothing?

FYI I'm a winter according to color analysis. And yes, I know it should be taken with a grain of salt, but I do look better in intense colors.
