You look beautiful and those jeans are quite awesome on you.

I actually kind of like the dark coral color on you (are you wearing blush? The color is working well with your cheekbones either way). Are you a dark autumn? I agree with what Vix says about your coloring naturally working with brights/jewels, but dark coral is one of those colors that works pretty broadly as it balances warm and cool.

I agree with Angie and Sveta that it might be about finding the right intensity and saturation and a poppy (darker, redder, brighter than coral) or a tomato orange red (darker than neon-y poppy, closer to a lipstick red) might work better than salmon, but you'd need to test to see. Banana Republic Factory has a ton of true poppy in jackets, tops and pants right now.

Beth Ann, I am glad you made the decision you did. I think you *can* wear that colour but it is not your best and you will look much better in the true poppy. But I also agree with Sveta about intensity levels.

No, not changing the skin color but I definitely changed my color palette when I went with dark hair: I can handle more contrast and brighter colors now much better than when my hair was medium brown.
I still caution you about BRIGHT tomato red though although tomato red may be a good color for you in general. I find that very bright colors wash me out - neons are not for me. But tone it down a bit and I am in business!

OK, so obviously I have totally different coloring than you, but... I find this color much easier for me to wear in the summer, when I have a bit of tan. Then the additional warmth enhances the tan, whereas in winter, I look a bit more sickly. So, I wonder if that could be true for you too. Of course if you don't ever get tan, then it's a moot point.

Otherwise, I agree with Angie that a true BRIGHT tomato red would be better.

Very late getting back to this. DD smashed her iPad, and it needed replacing before a big test --- oh, well, better than smashed car or broken arm.

I hate to bump my own thread, but I wanted to say thank you for continuing to help grow in my understanding of color flattery!

Sveta: Yes, we are similar in coloring, and I know you understand the challenge. Do you find yourself changing skin tone over time?

Angie: Thanks for the visuals on the tomato red -- I like the fact that this shade is more "4 season." I shall keep my eyes open -- and my neutral palette gives me lots of leeway to play with small accents of colors! BTW -- I returned the jacket, but came home with a BR blouse and the Resin kick flares. Loved them!

Unfrumped: I love my mustard bag, but never wear yellow, so I know what you mean! I think I might end up playing with supporting players like footwear, bangles, belts, etc, this summer. And prints are a great way to try a different direction! I so agree with you on that!

I vote return also.
I think you look better in the deeper and cooler colors--the cooler dark reds, for example.
But, and Angie said it first, I think since you can do some warmer colors, that bits of this color with cooler colors can be very enlivening.

I have found that little bits of cognac or mustard or brown or even a peachier blush, when used in a print or trim of a mostly cooler, darker color (magenta, cool burgundy, denim blue) looks really good on me ( I think!)--possibly better than a completely tonal dark outfit. It's something about the fact that the bit of lighter color echoes skin tone in a good way that a solid amount of it could not, while the darker cooler colors address the overall degree of contrast and "season" of color thing, so the overall effect is happy and healthy.

I'm really fascinated by this because the colors that look good on you also look good on me (cobalt, sapphire, aubergine, hot pink) and my hair color the past several years has been pretty light (naturally). As I transition to more grey hair these colors, which I used to wear, are looking better and better on me. Fascinating chemisty, to me...

Beth Ann, I think your coloring is similar to mine. I think this is not a problem of a warm color but of a level of intensity of it - it almost boders on neon to my eye. It would be too bright for me as well and would wash me out. However a softer, less neon-y shade of watermelon or colar would look great on you (and on me too!). It is all a matter of finding a right shade of the color.
In comparison I think your skin looks much better in the last 2 pictures - especislly in that cobalt.

AJ: Ha! I have that exact print in the Loft tunic blouse. Wore it for the first time yesterday. I love the print, although I think I'll like it even better in September, when it's hot, but I want less summery colors! Lilac is a good idea -- going well with my blues, livening up my greys. I'm also going to be on the lookout for orchid.

Rachy: I loved your jacket in your CNY outfit! There is less pink than in the pic -- this jacket is really more salmon, and the lining is really orange. Yellow, and yellow green have always been death on me, due to my olive undertones. I wonder if it's the fact that I'm high contrast that makes me wear cool shades with warm skin? At any rate, I'm trying to remember that skin tone changes (and brings wrinkles) over time. Perhaps it's time to branch out?

I do think you'll be happier using that color in accessories. It is represented in your scarf in 3 & 4, right?

A couple of months ago, I added this blushy lilac cord skinnies from Loft and am loving it! It's not a color that would be great near my face, but I'm finding that it has been a great spring transition for my darker neutral tops. I'm wearing it today with the other Loft find below which I also highly recommend.

Maybe you can find a poppy crop pant, skirt, or shorts?

Retail: I've attached the coat in the Finds below. I purchased this at NAS last summer, but saw the coat in the store about a month ago. It has a removable lining, and is terrific. I'm not a fan of the shiny buttons, but that's an easy fix (if I get to it). The hood is removable, but I'm too practical to take it off, even though it's sleeker that way!

Smittie: Yes, I'm a bit tired of my usual raspberry this year, and I'd love a summery bright substitute. I think the shape of the jacket suits me, as well (and it's even better in the back). It's just a lot of the color to manage!

Style and Kiwigal: I wanted everyone's first impressions -- thanks for chiming in!

Betty and Momo: It's good to know that there are options for new colors -- thanks for the thumbs up!

Marina: You and I are much the same. I know (and love) my best colors, but I also crave variety. I think the answer with this color is to use it as an accent, not a star player.

Staysfit: "Changing up my wardrobe" is a regular occurrence with me! I wish I were the type to stick to a small, well-curated wardrobe of elegant neutrals, but I'd never survive!

I think this is an okay but not wonderful color. This really shows up in comparison because the coral color itself is pretty good, it's just that the darker shades look much better on you. So if you want something to change up your wardrobe with, this would be a good choice.

I think for every one there are some really flattering and some really unflattering colors, but there are a lot of shades in-between the sick and the fabulous too. Some colors look "just acceptable", "ok" or "nice", not quite flattering or unflattering.

I think this poppy color looks nice on you, while the sapphire blue is definitely a flattering one. Now it's up to you to decide if nice is good enough or if it is not for the situations where you intend to use your jacket ;)

Personally, for everyday purpose I avoid unflattering colors and make sure to always have a few tops, third pieces and scarves in flattering colors for when I really want to be "better than fine", but I also have a lot of things in "ok" and "nice" colors that I like too, so I would definitely keep this poppy jacket.

I prefer the cooler tones on you. The brighter coral colour is not your friend. Trying to think of a nicer way of saying it but then why would that be a good idea. You look awesome in the cooler cobalt. Rock it.

I might be chiming in too late but I love this coral/watermelon colour on you. It is very summery, and I think a jacket in this colour makes a statement in a good way. It's bright without knocking your socks off. Everyone is different and I don't see this as making you look sickly as deb mentions.
I must say I love that eggplant (aubergine sounds so much better) colour on you.

Hi, Beth Ann, the coral/red/pink/strawberry looks good on you. Absolutely keep. But I have to say he cobalt coat is fabulous. Is that an Ellen Tracy coat? Both colors look great.

Yes, Jules! Loft has had some great blouses and tops this year (I'm wearing one now -- see Find below).

I think I"m going to return the jacket. fter working with it in my closet, I would call is "Bossy Poppy." The jacket is, for want of a better word, a Diva. "Look at me!" "Make me the Star!" My cobalt jacket seems positively mellow, like a guy in a hookah bar, by comparison.

I will use poppy, just not as a topper (although I though Rachy's was fab). And maybe I'll have some funds left to explore orchid.......

Well sounds like decision made. I love the Loft shell, I was just admiring it online the other day!

Thanks, fabbers! That's exactly the sort of feedback I need. I'm in a housecleaning binge at the moment, so I have to type quickly, but I appreciate the detail in your responses --- it's very helpful. And those of you who prefer me in cool brights -- - thanks for being willing to say so -- I know it's sometimes hard to be sure that someone really wants all reactions, but, in this case, at least, I really do!

I think the blue jacket in the last picture is perfect for you, in intensity and warmth. My first reaction to the coral/poppy jacket is that it's too soft for you. You've got the beautiful hair and skin and eye coloring that can take a lot of contrast, and I feel like the poppy is a little washed out. You should wear that sapphire color all the time.

I see it as more coral also. I prefer the darker colors but feel that you may look good in a true poppy color if you find it, need to see a pic .
