So I have heard bits & pieces about Color Me Beautiful on the board and honestly, I have never understood the references to seasons, warm/cool etc. On Thursday, I was at pre-school story hour at the library with my son when I saw a book on the new releases shelf that caught my eye," Color Me Beautiful: 4 seasons of color, makeup & style," which I grabbed immediately to satiate my curiosity. Funny thing is that I thought it would only be a reference for caucasian women but surprisingly it also included women of different ethnicities as well.

So now I finally get it! I learned that I am "cool" not warm as I would have expected and that I am a "winter" (based on my hair, skin and eye color). The book then lists color swatches on best colors for your type as well as colors to avoid. Anyway, I don't put too much stock in rules like this but I did think it was interesting and it sort of explained why I have had issues with some colors in the past. Case in point - as a Winter, I am supposed to avoid tan/camel. For some reason, I have never been able to wear camel well. Right out of college, I bought myself a camel wool/cashmere coat at Brooks Brothers and in all the years I owned it (gave it to Goodwill about 5 years ago), I probably wore it about 8 times. For some reason, I never liked the way it looked on me - I only bought it because I thought camel was classic and the sales assistant assured me that it looked great with black hair.

Oh and something else funny for Laura - I know you mentioned Color Me Beautiful awhile back in reference to wearing orange. I remember I got in a huff because you said orange was not a summer color and I had been looking forward to wearing orange this summer (I have two summer weight shirts that are orange, both of which I bought last year). Well, guess what - Orange is not a "winter" color either!!! I guess I will have to try on my orange shirts and see what you ladies think!

If anyone is interested, the book is by Joanne Richmond:
