I’ve always wanted to do a colour analysis with someone. Various things stop me. One, I apparently don’t see a lot of shades of blue - they look the same to me. So even with colour swatches selected just for me, I may not really be able to use them. The second is, I don’t fancy my chances finding any actual clothes in ‘my colours’...

Yes --
To me there's more similarity than difference in the Caygill-esque and Zyla palettes.

The truly custom palettes (vs the "you're Season X") have a much broader range of tones and values -- more complexity. And yet they all work together.

I'm glad you're at a point where you feel good with your colors but since you don't feel *quite* settled, I selfishly wish you'd had an in-person or online session with someone like Kathy at Beauty Valued. I bet that would tie it all together for you!

[She has a lot of clients who agreed to let her post photos with palettes on her FB page...and there's a fair bit of diversity in skin tone...might be worth scanning them to see if you see anyone that reminds you of you.]

Just popping in to thank everyone for your thoughts and wisdom on this topic! I think the bottom line is, what works for one might not work for the next. Some people's palette is a perfect for and is the colors they love - fantastic! For some perhaps it's a complete mismatch, in which case, forget it! For many it seems, it's a useful exploration tool, but not a perfect system. I don't regret all my exploration ... It's fun, and I learned a lot. I do think something in the line of cool, somewhat deeper, and somewhat softer, will often work for me. If an outfit is not working, this is one troubleshooting tool I can use. But then bright cobalt looks quite good, as does pastel pink and blue. So it's not hard and fast, for sure.
The Caygill system is interesting; it reminds me of David Zyla. The funny thing for me though, is many of the colors in my gray-green-hazel eyes, for example, look horrific on me as clothes, as do the warmer orangey-brown tones in my hair. Even pulling the colors directly from one's face is not a no-fail for everyone! Hence my conclusion that it ultimately comes down to the individual and the eye of the beholder, in the end. Thanks all for sharing your stories and experiences ... A terrific thread

Interesting thread and good to read others experiences. I had my colours done years ago but I am a magpie, and so it didn't really stick. I really like to understand which colours are 'on trend' in some kind of vague way. I just like colour and the way colours can be seen, and I think that I can wear most colours, but it depends on shape style make up etc.

I had a colour analysis done many years ago and really liked the woman. She did not fit me into a certain one exactly but told me why not. This is really my palette but it has way too many neutral colours so would not work for me, I look better in a multi coloured top than any one colour even if it was my best colour.
What I found most interesting is that she labelled the colours in my palette as to where to wear them on my body. This would be great in shoes and a purse while this would make a great skirt but look at this one for a blouse.
I found this very interesting as all the females in my family were autumn and I was a summer who wore their hand me downs.
Her advise on transitioning my wardrobe was interesting too. Wear the wrong clothes but bring them more into your romantic style and you'll look good. In your own palette and exact colour amazing but you can't have everything as you're not going to go home and ditch your entire wardrobe.
For example the lilac blouse i just bought. A little too clear and a little too light for me but a thousand times better than the white in my palette. Good make up, an amazing skirt in my tones and still look lovely.
I really liked her reasoning behind her analysis and the advise of how to make the now wardrobe work.

I was first 'colour analysed' in the late 80s. I'm a very fair skinned person, with a pinkish flush, ashy-gold hair that has red highlights in the sun and grey-green-blue eyes. I was 'assessed' as Winter, by an analyst with "Snow White" colouring. She commented at the time that she found me 'difficult', and I wonder if, in the end she chose the colours that she just liked anyway. I'm pretty sure they were "her" colours. But I was too young to question her, and anyway, wasn't wearing a lot of dark colours what you did, if you wanted to look sophisticated in the city? It was good news if she was telling me those were 'my' colours!
Fast forward 20+ years, and I'm wondering why I feel so terrible in my clothes- I look tired, cold and drained, my hair colour is flat, I feel frumpy all the time. I have no idea where to start, so do a bit of research, and discover that colour analysis is more complicated now. I find a sci-art analyst, and treat myself for my birthday. She assesses me as a Light Spring- the opposite of what I've been wearing (or trying to wear) for the last 20 years!
I'm not convinced at the analysis- I love the colours, but cannot see how I can make a gelato-fairy-coloured wardrobe work. And no black! Then I start wearing 'my' colours, and I'm not looking tired or hypothermic anymore, my hair and eyes have their colour back. People around me comment on the difference. Someone asks if I've dyed my hair, it's a great colour, can they know who my hairdresser is? But something is still not right for me. I discover Kibbe- I realise I'm a dramatic type in his system. The clothing revolution continues...
My point is that, as someone who is a bit unusual in terms of colouring and physical build, and who has 'demanding' colouring and figure, these systems were a very helpful start point, when well-applied.

A good analysis should help you see yourself more clearly, after some initial confusion (depending on how far the analysis points from your original expectations about yourself). But they are tools- if they're not useful to you, don't be bound by them.

Great thread. I tend to the over-analytical as well TG, in all aspects of life, I think to help me make sense of my world at the time.
I came across Colour Me Beautiful ( Carole Jackson) in late 1984. It was good timing for me. I had not long finished uni and come back from my first ever trip to Australia. In those days you couldn't easily get Australian clothes in NZ like you can now so I had spent some of the new money I had earned on some very bright yellows, greens, corals- very early 80s, really appealed to me. And so many compliments! Then I found the book. And the colours I'd already picked were straight out of the Spring page, it was uncanny. So I think it was lucky that the colours I liked and felt good in fit a season so exactly. I never got "done". Other books and systems I've read since or checked online still lean me towards warm, though it may be changing a little with my greying hair and I am able to wear silver better of late. My skin is fairly neutral so many colours can look good. With black it's definitely better with a scoop neck so my skin softens it. My heart is still given to Spring colours. I have been learning through YLF to pay attention to more than colour alone though- to fit, to flattery, to practicality, to number of wears I am likely to get.
Your post was interesting Style Fan- another who very clearly fit an original season in your own view and know the colours you liked/like. I'm amused by dear Sophie having her own season!

Just to make this whole “best colors” concept even more complicated, most researchers working in the color perception area now think people don’t “see” the same color when they look at an object. Physiological differences in the way in which our eyes handle light waves and our resulting interpretation of that stimulus make it perfectly possible that what reads as a flattering color to one person could seem “off” to another. Same thing with color harmony—what is aesthetically pleasing to one person might not appeal to another. Harmony is culture-bound, and varies across different contexts and circumstances, as opposed to being a fixed state. Same goes for flattery.

Like everything else in fashion, it’s probably wiser to view advice offered by outside observers as information, not fact.

If I had to determine my season, I would say "autumn" definitely. I even bought the book back in the 80s and wished that I was one of the other seasons because I loved the model's eye color and skin tone.

That said, I gravitate towards certain colors that make me feel good. Luckily, they also look good on me. Though I have been told I look good in florals, I do not own or wear florals. If you don't like something do you still feel good wearing it? In my case no.

So when I go shopping, I look for color first, then style. Even if the style was great for me, I would not buy if I did not like the color. About the only exception is black. I am not a fan, but will wear black in a slack or skirt and never as a top.

Hi again TG!

I know Angie and YLF members' opinions on personal color analysis and flattering print/patterns varies greatly. Some very lively discussions over the years here and I'm always up for another!

Great question re systems that create truly custom palettes.

They're out there -- many derive from Suzanne Caygill techniques, including Carla Mathis' [The Triumph of Individual Style author mentioned above]. Some just start with System XYZ and encourage the color analysts to pick a "homebase season" and then whatever colors from other seasons work with an individual's coloring.

Sounds a lot like what some YLFers like Style Fan have experienced.

I'll link to Beauty Valued, a custom color consultant whose work I peek at now and again. She shows a palette she developed for a client who then brought in palettes that spanned the decades -- you'll immediately see the color harmony. And if you don't she walks you through it.

I'm one who believes 100% that we each have colors, color combinations, and print/patterns that make us look anywhere from stunning to godawful.

And I always encourage people to stay in end of the "stunning to good" end of the spectrum unless an item in question is a fairly small accent. Some have a much smaller range than others, it's true.

Perhaps ironically, my color palette is DIY.

But it works well enough that I now have a little word-of-mouth sideline helping others do the above in a very real-time way. I used to feel apologetic about not having invested in the drapes, swatches, training etc but people know what they get with me. They get someone in their closet, at the shops, and/or at the fabric stores sharing what I see in a very hands-on process.

To me, theories (fashion-related or not) are just that—theories, or attempts to explain something in a systematic way. Systematic thinking can aid us in organizing our random thoughts and observations which, in turn, MAY lead to some insights.

I think the points you’ve outlined are applicable to any fashion advice/theory and ought to be posted right beside a good full-length mirror. Rabbit holes are for rabbits.

I went down the rabbit hole too in the past. I had one consultation which told me I was a Soft Summer. I agreed with some of it, but the make up she used on me afterwards was horrible and made me feel really fake. I got some swatches out of that which I never used. But I think that the idea isn't completely wrong - too cool, too warm, too saturated and too bright colors simply overwhelm me. So I keep the "Soft Summer" in the back of my mind when I shop, but it's not the main thing I build my style decisions on.

so interesting....i've never been a "get your colors done" person, i got why people do it, but for me color is an internal as well as external choice....i always felt the systems were too limiting as they are about the external

When I was in my 20s, a SA told me I was an autumn. I started wearing autumnal colors such as olive, chestnut, and pumpkin. I liked wearing these colors even though they were sometimes hard to find, and I was happy.

Several years ago I decided to go grey. When I was done transitioning, my hair was silvery, and had a very cool tone. Yet it didn’t clash with my face. I started wearing grey for the first time in my life, and I felt great. So I might not be an autumn, but it doesn’t matter, because I wear colors I feel like wearing (grey, blue, olive and pale pink). And I’m pretty happy.

This is an interesting topic — and reactions! I had my colors done way back in the 80s too, and my two BFFs (then and now) were also having theirs done. They are both brown-eyed, dark-haired, and olive-skinned, so very obviously fell into winter category. So I was a little surprised that fair-skinned, freckled, blue-green eyed me also fell into that category.

But over the years I have had times when I experimented with color. I’ve tried muted dusty tones, yellow, warm reds, earth tones, etc., most of which really do me no favors. Regardless of what season I am, I really look better in cool shades. Nothing acidic or overly bright, nothing pastel unless it’s in the mint-green to pale blue range. Jewel tones, especially in blues and greens are a slam dunk.

However I don’t like to be too prescriptive. I like and will wear chocolate brown, and I love bronze-y metallics. I am rediscovering some love for gold jewelry as well.

Basically, I believe in wearing colors that appeal to us visually and psychologically. I don’t like overly bright colors on me (at least not head to toe) because it makes me feel too conspicuous and inauthentic. I’d rather my statement be interesting styles or details rather than a very bold color.

Much like Kibbe, I think color analysis can be fun and interesting, but the bottom line is to feel like your style choices make you feel fab! If a style or color that objectively flatters you ends up feeling like a costume, it’s not going to feel comfortable or authentic.

I haven’t thought much about this since the 80s when Color Me Beautiful first came out. I didn’t even realize that “having one’s colors done” was still a thing, so I’ve been enjoying this thread. I’m probably a winter, and black, white, navy, and true blues and reds do dominate my wardrobe, but I’ve had fun adding the occasional lighter or warmer tones of olive, gold, spring green, pale jade, and chartreuse. Recently, I had my make-up done, and the aesthetician pointed out that my skin tone was fairly neutral, which made a lot of sense, as I find both gold and silver jewelry to be equally attractive. With availability of colors at retail being a limiting factor, I just choose the ones I like, that bring a smile to my face.

I ve been “done”twice and both times the ladies doing it picked me out of the crowd to do the initial demo as they obviously thought I was a very definite season however when it came to making all the colours in my seasonal group work they got a bit frustrated as the colours didn’t suit me as well as they had thought and they were wandering off into other seasons colours.Any way I came away with the conclusion that only a very limited number of colours really suited me so that didn’t do much for my self image! However after a while of sticking to my recommended colours which incidentally were not easy to find ,I got bored and went back to wearing what I want.My only concession to limiting my colour palette is to not wear black directly up against my face as I feel it drains me.Or in the words of one of the colour consultants that I saw,if you want to look old Cardiff girl you will carry on wearing black.Nice !and not terribly helpful,I was in my 20 s At the time. This paticular lady also offered a course on dressing for your body shape ,needless to say I didn’t go back or I d have probably spent the rest of my life in an apple green sack.
I enjoy colour and colour combinations and was not happy being limited by the implied rules and restrictions.I think that just as every ones face is individual to look at ,one s colouring is also very individual and trying to put people into set colour restrictions is not going to work.

High-five, LaPed, another born skeptic and sort-of-gamine reporting for duty! (I feel the same about Kibbe as I feel about colour analysis as I feel about astrology. A fun and even absorbing hobby that occasionally lands a zinger of an insight but also presents serious risks for the credulous and ought to come with a warning label.)

I do think that some people have an intuitive sense of colour and what works on them...and that makes the whole thing easier to finesse. It gives a confidence. Some people are looking for that when they go to a colour analyst and that is a skill that many can learn.

A hunch: analysts who see themselves as teachers as opposed to Goddesses of Colour probably help a lot more people than the reverse.

There's no denying that most of us look a whole lot better in some colours than others and it is nice to have a basic sense of what works and what does not.

I think what others have said above, too, that you have to combine this knowledge with an awareness of other aspects of style -- what contrast levels look best on you, the kind and size of patterns you're happiest in, and cuts and details that work reliably...and then you have to stick to these, which can be harder, in a season where trends don't conform, especially if you bore easily and want to try something new.

And it's dangerous to pay attention only to colour. Take me. Time and again I have vowed: I will not buy an item just for its flattering colour. I will not buy just because I love the colour!

Yet...I still have not learned that lesson. Exhibit A. I knew from the start of the fussy sleeve trend that, by and large, I do not care for fussy sleeves and they don't care for me. But then I found a top that was in one of my "best" colours and not expensive, and had a modified but not terribly fussy sleeve... Of course I had to have it.

Number of times worn? 3. I don't like it, and that is that -- flattering colour or no.

Torontogirl, I have enjoyed reading your color musings and glad you are not plunging to the bottom of the rabbit hole.
Years ago I had my colors done. One method firmly pegged me as a winter, because of the contrast between my skin, dark hair and eyes. Another method draped each color individually, creating my own color palette, which fell mostly in the Autumn zone. I followed the color rules successfully (I think) for a long time.
What I learned was that no matter what the lighting, makeup or other, there are some colors that just do not look good next to my skin. I learned that I look best in clear hues ( that seems to hold true). I did learn that some color combinations multiply the “that looks great” factor. I learned that some colors that look good with my hair and skin only make me happy if I amp them up with accessories.
My own journey changes over time and will likely continue as I become more white and silvery gray haired. Color Me Happy is my system. No matter what color I have on, joy makes it look better. Happiness on the inside generates energy, shining eyes and a smiling face on the outside.

Just to add, a little quote I learned in science: “all models are simplifications of reality”. I often tend to think that models and theories ARE reality- then have to remind myself that they’re only an idea made up by people lol. Seasonal colour analysis is a case in point, but I still love it.

Great topic, TG. I have read a bit about seasonal colour analysis and I belong to a few facebook colour analysis groups. It seems to me that the colour theory works well for some people and not others. I am an easy one. I have golden blonde hair, warm skin tones, green/blue eyes with bronze flecks and I tan really well.
I have always been drawn to earth tones. When the book "Colour Me Beautiful" came out it was pretty obvious that I was an Autumn. I have gone on a journey visiting colour analysts and returned to the four seasons. For me wearing a few colours helps me keep a small wardrobe that I love. I have organically chosen the colours over the years to be what I consider to be some of my best colours. The colours are all Autumn ones.

You may want to skip this but this is my colour journey.

1/ In the early 1980s a group of friends met with a Colour Analyst who used the 4 Seasons from "Colour Me Beautiful". She determined I was a Spring. I tried to wear the Spring colours for a few months or years until one day when I was wearing a chocolate brown top (an Autumn colour) a work colleague said to me "That colour looks amazing on you." I went back to my earth tones and bought Autumn colours.

2/ In 2015 I decided to go to a Sci/Art analyst for my Colour Analysis. This was very expensive. Very. From the beginning, it felt wrong. She draped me as a True Summer. I looked hideous in the pictures. My husband said I looked embalmed. To top off the experience as I was leaving she said: "You have beautiful Ash Blonde hair". Ash Blonde. I told her usually my hair was called Golden Blonde. She was very surprised.

3/ After the above experience, I went to a lovely woman who worked in the 16 seasons. She determined I was a Warm Autumn and also put True Autumn colours in my palette. She told me I could wear any of the Autumn colours. She also explained to me why, in her opinion, I was an Autumn and not a Spring. It was something to do with the type of skin I had. Spring are clear and Autumns are muted. Made sense to me.

So now I wear Autumn colours. The journey was an interesting one. I knew what worked for me from the beginning.

Interesting thread. I have found having some general color theory knowledge really helpful, especially when “composing” an outfit. It can help me to pinpoint why an outfit may not be working, or why a particular combination pops so well.
In terms of seasonal colour analysis, I’ve found my palette fits me really well (soft summer LIGHT- the newer 16 category system). It is very specific though- and often unavailable in garments in the shops. It does seem to light up my face and hair....
However, as Angie and so many others say, colour works in relationship- so having an awesome outfit is perfectly possible in any color palette. Will it make your complexion look it’s best? Maybe not! But if your outfit is awesome, then your complexion looking a little less than perfect is a small price to pay if you know what I mean.

I definitely jumped down the color analysis rabbit hole. I was typed as a spring as a child by my mother, which I don’t count because she just loves those colors. Then I was typed as a summer twice and then an autumn and a soft autumn, finally I was typed as a light summer! So, everything but winter I could never make use of any of my colors until the last analysis. The light summer palette somehow clicked. Every color in my personal palette works. I love them. I admit readily that there is no way to adhere dogmatically to my palette. However, I find that having one has been very helpful in putting together a large, cohesive wardrobe. Without my palette, I would have less versatile use from my wardrobe. As it is, I can mix and match items and not duplicate outfits for at least six weeks, maybe more, I’m still tracking to see how long I can keep going. When I shop I think of the beach and it always works. I don’t need to carry a color wallet. I can always identify my colors accurately without. The colors sing to me and make me happy. Maybe I am a person for whom the color analysis was useful?

The woman who did my colors explained that my skin is neutral, which would allow for me to veer either warm or cool. My eyes also have both warm and cool tones, so they can can look either green or grey, but they are mostly a grey green color. Since my hair has changed colors, my color palette would likely change with my hair, even though they aren’t supposed to. In the end, an analysis is supposed to pick the colors that look best on the person overall, and that is what happened in my process. There was debate between the light spring and light summer colors, They both looked good, but more of the light summer colors worked.

I like to learn about color but have found the seasonal analysis less than interesting for me too. I’m,probably a cool or soft summer (depending on my hair color?) but dislike many of the pastel shades and love the esthetic of mixing warm and cool neutrals, like grey and brown. I found it more interesting to learn about the nuts and bolts behind the system. I look generally better in cool shades because of my pink complexion. I don’t have a lot of contrast in my features so muted (greyed out) tones look and often feel better. My eyes are a medium blue and my hair a medium brown so when it comes to color saturation and combinations, again ,medium is best. Not that I always stick to those rules. But you won’t find me wearing black and white together (nor black or white near my face) any more.

Such inserting and resonant analysts. I have just done a few on line assessments! And don’t agree with them. I want to believe! But I think I’m one of your skeptics. I can’t even figure out if I’m better in silver or gold jewelry. My strawberry blonde hair seems warm, but my green-blue eyes and Scandinavian fair skin turn cool.

I have such a limited comfort zone with my color palette (burgundy, navy, teal and dark green- which I can’t find this year) that color analysis might be a starting point to push me. But I would definitely take it with a grain of salt.
