Zaeobi, very interesting comments about how chocolate browns work so well for you. I've never experienced the "not-quite-right-color" with black items but I do with dark blues. I have very few dark brown items. Yeah, that's great advice about not ditching black until replacements have been added. (And at the moment I don't plan to ditch the black). The pseudo-neutrals idea is a good one although I'm not sure I have enough items to make that work .... but I certainly do with regular neutrals!

Your colours look like a good match for you! (Based on what I can see).

I completely understand what you said about black. That said, switching to chocolate brown as the *only* dark neutral in my closet has honestly been life changing for me! I know that sounds dramatic lol, but it's made *such* a difference in getting dressed each day - no more faffing about with not-quite-right black, having to overthink how I can 'make it work' near to my face with the right makeup etc. Too much effort!

It was definitely a *long-term* process though (as you know, black is everywhere) - so I advocate that you don't get rid of any utilitarian black items until *after* you've found a better replacement in 'your' colours. I still even have practical black items in my UK capsule wardrobe, but separating them from my main wardrobe really helped - thought I'd miss them, but I don't!

If you can't find good light neutral replacements for your black items, maybe you could experiment with psuedo neutrals in your February challenge? I use plum like a pseudo neutral though (e.g. where someone else would use black in an outfit, I use dark purple &/ or brown) - so would something like that work for you too?

RobinF, I suspect a lot of people don't fit "neatly" into any one color season. The system my stulist used was NOT about seasons, it was about choosing a bunch of specific colors (she said she did use the seasons system in the past). I totally agree about taking what you want from it and leaving the rest.

LaPed, loved your comment about the "desert SW colors" the first time I ever visited there (US SW) I noticed the colors you mentioned plus teal-ish colors...so completely different from New England landscapes! I like the idea of two of your suggested combos (the ones w/o pink) cream/pale yellow shades plus the deep and midtone blues & chocolate; pale blue/aqua with deep browns. Love your personal philosophy a) everyone has black pupils, so some dose of black should work with any personal color palette, and b) wear what you like and like what you wear; rules are made to be broken (or at least bent)!

Star thanks! I think the reason cool is not "recommended" for me is not about cool toned coloring but because I'm very pale and low-contrast between hair and skin etc. But I like it and am going to wear it!

Very fun! I’ve always been curious to see how a color analyst would type me (but not curious enough to shell out!). I think your palette is gorgeous and makes a lot of sense for your personal coloring, even if it’s different from what you’d choose for yourself. I wear a lot of these colors myself — I love dusty, sage-y greens and deep, murky pinks (for me, this combo evokes a desert southwest vibe that makes me very happy). Some other combos I think would be worth a try: the cream/pale yellow shades plus the deep and midtone blues; pale pinks with burgundy or chocolate; pale blue/aqua with deep browns.

My personal philosophy with black is that a) everyone has black pupils, so some dose of black should work with any personal color palette, and b) wear what you like and like what you wear; rules are made to be broken (or at least bent)!

Love those colors she gave you. I agree with taking what you want from it and leaving the rest. It could help pinpoint if you are trying to decide between a few items for instance. I also wear both warm and cool colors so that can be confusing. I have never been able to pinpoint my own season.

Suz, GREAT point about needing one's wardrobe to reflect one's personality, regardless of other do's/don'ts. It's amazing that you are not "supposed" to wear white - it looks great on you! And good luck finding that chartruese that is your new color for the year!! I've not been craving that "pop of color" thing at all in the last few years but am considering red bag/footwear for spring ...

Lesley I did find it a very useful and fun process, so go for it if you are inclined.

Thanks Jaime! Even if I wanted to try all the options, I would NOT be able to find them all at retail!!! I already have enough difficulty with that, don't need to make it worse Good thing I'm not interested.

Indigoprint, very interesting comment about daylight vs evening as a factor in choosing what color to wear. I think black looks good on almost everyone in evening (artificial) light where it might not in the light of day.

Thanks Runcarla - will it be a good year for teal? I'll have to see what appears once spring clothing starts to be available.

RachyLou - you are spot on that colors available at retail can have no relationship to one's palette .... and it could happen for many seasons :-)

I get where you’re coming from on the pinks. I do see olive adjacent colours in the palette.

A colour analysis has always seemed like it would be fun, but I’ve never done it because I don’t see how I’d ever find anything in the given colours. The year I wanted teal, there was no teal!

I love color analysis and secretly observe color and how it enhances all the time. I am a soft summer and am sad that black is not my best....but I still wear it, mostly after the sun goes down when the harsh contrast is not so evident. It does help me discipline my purchases to know some colors just do not work for me even if I like the style/ cut of the garment so there is that.
Signe at uselesswardrobe.dk
has recently added color analysis to her vlogs and I have found her journey intetesting

I'm jealous of everyone's color wheels! Maybe I'll treat myself to analysis one of these days. I know I love wearing bright jewel tones, no mystery there, but I don't know my neutrals as well--whites, blacks, grays, browns, etc. Chris, your colors look pretty gorgeous.

Personality is definitely part of it! I wear high contrast stripes and I am a low contrast person, and I don't care, because if the stripes are technically "too bold" for my colouring, they are not too bold for my personality. But I do avoid black and white stripes -- only going for ivory or white and blue, or blue and ivory and white. (Or grey and white, which obviously works in a more low contrast way.)

Also, I 'm not "supposed" wear white (according to most of the systems out there -- they do vary a bit and winter white is part of some true or cool summer palettes -- but, um, we all know how crazy that is. White actually works really well on me and it has ever since I was a child, so there! I distinctly remember my mother saying how surprised she was about that, because it did not suit her (and our colouring is quite similar).

You have to make it work for you!

I was chuckling at Laura's comment because I remember my mom and hre friends using the colour wallet that way.

My own approach has always been -- look at the general colour family and if the article I'm considering is roughly in the ballpark and/or I like it and like how it looks on me, and it works with the rest of the clothes -- Bob's my uncle!

And now I'm planning to branch out to a colour (as an accent) that forms absolutely zero part of any colour wheel that has ever been suggested for me. ;)

Dee, interesting idea about pulling together stuff in your closet that matches the palette vs does not. If I had more closet space I'd try that but I think it would be really difficult to do. I could see moving toward navy and dark charcoal (that one I already wear) as dark neutrals but they are not as easy to find.

cat2 - hah you can join Helena and me in the "sticking with black" club :-)

Sal - I like your idea of leaving out the colors that don't work or you don't like, and then things fall into place! For me that is brights, pink, super warm tones, pink, most greens. I like black in summer too, although I also like more light colors at that time of year also.

Cardiff girl: The trick is finding the right garment in the right size and silhouette and in the colour you want, not an easy task! Exactly! And if you need or want something new you often have to compromise.

Thanks slim cat. I can readily understand it being difficult to find the right fabrics and tones in those colors you mentioned. I don't plan to stress about it too much I love the idea of re-imagining!

Suz - I have not tried to figure out which seasonal color palette I fit into, but soft summer does sound close. And yes I do use the word jarring when I think about wearing bright or bold colors. :-). I totally agree about wearing black, and I could see introducing more other dark neutrals although I don't feel compelled to make it a goal. Right now black works better with my wardrobe overall than dark brown (only have a tiny bit of it) or dark blue (except denim) but as you say this might change over time.

Helena, I love your comment about black being irreplaceable in terms of accessibility, versatility and longevity. So it stays!! I totally agree! And yes this is a reference point, a thought provoking excercise, but not something I'm going follow strictly.

Thanks Bonnie. To wear new colors I'd have to buy new things .... and right now I'm only buying a few things for a warm weather trip in a month, to combine with stuff I already own, and am not generally going with new colors. Maybe in spring ...

Angie, you said it best ... (of course)... Style is about the sartorial preferences that you can manage daily, feel great in, to the extent that you forget about what you're wearing and your energized and calmed by your outfit. Hmm, you and Suz agree with me being a 'soft summer" ... I'll have to take a look at that palette too. It will be fun to see what teal items appear once I start looking. I can see that spring palette working well for you, adjusted of course for your love of brights!

Hah Laura, good story about your Mom! I can't imagine being that literal about using the palette but then again I started off knowing what colors I do and don't like to wear as well as an understanding that colors available at retail will always have their limitations. I'll have to give that soft summer idea a try for a while to see if I agree with it. I do think one has to add one's personality to the mix - it will a strong influence on color preferences.

Firecracker, interesting comments. My stylist said hair color is super important so no wonder your colors have changed. She in fact said that if I was planning to change it I should do that BEFORE doing the color analysis. (I had no such plans).

It sounds like a fun and worthwhile experience. You have learnt about yourself and also your palette.

I like the colours in the palette - and it’s very coordinating. I can see that mixing these would make a chic wardrobe. But I also agree with adding in what you like and what feels right.

I suspect I am the same as Angie - a warm spring. But I could be a clear spring or a warm autumn. My approach is to avoid my worst colours and I can make everything else work. No chartreuse, citron, optic/ blue white, charcoals and murky colours. Like you
I enjoy black and still wear it- mostly for work and for exercising. It’s better on me in summer for sure.

I found the color palette helpful in that it gave me a way of understanding why some things just didn’t work for me. But I am also a fan of black and not giving it up!

Very interesting to see that some of your color preferences were confirmed through this analysis. You were spot on with the low contrast aspect too. I always thought grey/blues would be fabulous on you and I think trying the "color palette only" challenge will help inform you about where you want to go with it all. I remember someone suggesting pulling all of the items in the new color palette together on one side of your closet, just to see how much you actually own of it already and then begin experimenting.

I had my colors done decades ago and for the most part I think they work well for me, because before that, I was all over the place with my colors and I struggled with my wardrobe. I was analyzed as a summer back then, although now they've branched out to soft or true summers. I do still wear some black every now and then, even though its not really in my palette but I usually combine it with a color that is in my color range but for the most part I've leaned more into the navys and charcoal greys instead of black as my dark neutral.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Chris. I find color analysis fascinating--and somewhat perplexing, so I love to read about it! I can recognize how it works on other people but can't look at myself objectively enough most of the time to see fine distinctions between good colors and great ones. From your photos online, I would have guessed you were more warm overall--haha! Not the case at all, it turns out! It's so good that you got some confirmation and that you have confidence in what the analysis revealed to you.

The way your palette is organized, with hair, skin, and eye colors and then the ones you wear, looks like the one I had done about 12 years ago and then updated a few years later. The color analyst would not use the seasonal labels. I don't use my color fan anymore, because my hair has changed quite a bit since then, which I think has shifted my "best" colors somewhat, and the colors in my fan are on paper, which has become worn over time.

Thanks for sharing your journey, Chris! Sounds like you're being more than reasonable in how you apply the results. My mom used to work in a women's boutique and she said women would come in with one of those color fans and insist on matching the shades exactly. I don't think those were her favorite customers, lol!

Are you happy with the soft summer palette? It's very calming, that's for sure. I have blue-grey eyes and ash brown hair (at least the best I can tell as I'm always coloring it!) and think I'm a fellow soft summer. But the palette is a bit muted for my liking so I decided to also be a light summer. You can be two things, right? Ha!

Thanks again for sharing your experience. I'll be watching for your February palette adventures!

I'm a Warm and True Spring - even with the darker honey blonde hair. Here's my palette:

It's pretty spot on! I have less interest in wearing the purples, peaches, and some of the browns though. I like the clear crisp colours best! Plus navy, white, and pastel aqua (my version of light blue). Going with what I like best :)

How fun and interesting! Instructive and helpful. Much enjoyed reading this.

Take from this analysis what you like and feel good in Chris, and leave the rest. Style is about the sartorial preferences that you can manage daily, feel great in, to the extent that you forget about what you're wearing and you're energized and calmed by your outfit :)

I see a mostly cool palette of cool tints, shades and tones. Not unlike Suz's and Inge's palette! Yes to being a Soft Summer - to use traditional colour analysis terminology.

I always thought you wore cool tones well - especially those light and mid-tone blues!! You look good in navy too. Your hair and eyes are more cool toned, from what I can see here!

You should definitely join Team Teal. Brooklyn, Suntiger and Diana will be proud :)

This is a beautiful palette! I think your attitude is spot on ... I say this as someone who got a little unhealthily obsessed with finding the 'right' answer about colour analysis ... it's a useful tool and reference point, but not the be all end all. That said it sounds like there is a huge overlap between your preferences and what the analysis suggests are your best, and that's the sweet spot for sure!

As to black, I completely agree with you ... it's not technically one of my best, but I think it's good enough and to me it's irreplaceable in terms of accessibility, versatility and longevity. So it stays!!

Interesting! This looks like a soft summer palette, slightly adapted. To me, that makes sense (I mean, considering the extreme limitations of only seeing you in tiny poorly lit photos on a computer screen, LOL.) But what I mean is - soft summer is closer to autumn than the other summers, and can skew closer to neutral than cool -- hence your occasional confusion and attraction to some warm, some cool colours -- and also, maybe, your feeling that you don't like to wear strongly warm and strongly cool colours together very often, because maybe it feels too jarring on you when you do -- jangling your nerves somehow. Maybe you just look (and feel) best in this interim range.

There's a lot of overlap with the colours that work for me except these are more muted (by and large). When I had my colours "done" years ago, the analyst did a similar thing -- she gave me a predominantly cool or true summer spread, subtracting some of the palest pastels and all but one yellow, and adding brights from several other seasons. At the end of which, I scratched my head and thought, hmmm, why did I pay for this, I was already wearing all these colours?

But it was affirming and instructive, even so. And it sounds like it will prove useful for you over time.

It is true that there will always be a difficulty in finding what you want at retail. But with the wallet, maybe you can phase in a different dark neutral than black (over time) and begin to wear black more as an accent or "colour" or completer piece. I have several black coats that I still wear occasionally. I understand the attractions of black and more power to you if you feel confident and happy in it -- why not wear it?! Who says we can't break the "rules."

That said, as you phase in more of these other tones, your feelings about that might change. I, too, have always received compliments when I wear black, and despite all predictions, I can "get away with it." But navy/ ink are better and more importantly, maybe, they work better with the rest of my closet, making it more cohesive and allowing me to create more outfits from fewer items. So I chose dark neutrals (and lights) that were closer to my official palettes for my essentials -- and over time, built a wardrobe backbone of those (plus my lighter neutrals).

It will be fun to experiment with some of the other ideas. Some of those teals would be gorgeous on you and I can also see you in the bright burgundy. Chocolate brown is fab (but often hard to find). The blues you already do are also lovely. And the greyed charcoal-like taupes (hard to find at times, but so sophisticated!)

An interesting experience, for sure!

Fun project with lots of gorgeous colors - especially like "quiet" colors in collection. I'm low contrast summer ( dusty, or something like that - nothing bright and no primary colors ) and love teal, purple, dark green colors but rarely see the right tones in the right fabrics ( and
styles/sizes ) available. It takes a lot of patience and some compromises to find best pieces. Hope 2024 will be the year with successful wardrobe re-imagining .

I decided to have a professional color analysis done. I have been wanting to do this for a while. Last year was not so great for me fashion/wardrobe-wise, with a lot of mistakes and blah choices, so I thought a color analysis might shake things up a bit. The stylist I chose has been doing color analysis and personal styling for over 30 years. And, because she is based in greater Boston and we did this IRL, we we had a great conversation about the local B&M shopping scene over the years. It has gone SO far downhill :-( In this color system, I’m more cool than warm in coloring (but a hint of warm), with low contrast. I agree with this. My own preferences are for mostly darkish neutrals and a smattering of mostly darkish soft/muted color, with mostly low-contrast outfits, and I wear both cool and warm tones.

Overall Observations on the Palette

This is a custom palette of colors that are “best” for me. The upper left swatches are hair and eye color. There are a LOT of bright-to-me colors in the palette, with no warm tones or very dark ones. No super brights including optic white. LOTS of variety. The photo looks just a tiny bit warmer than the colors do IRL to my eye.

The greys, blues, and ivory/cream/white colors are mostly a
slam dunk, I wear them already. I do wear a little dark brown and dark red or burgundy. The metallics include both silver and a soft gold - I almost always go with gold especially for jewelry. There is a hidden gem here of a dark gunmetal color which I do love but don’t see much of. The teals and teal-adjacent colors are ones I’d like to try. The pinks and most of the greens do not appeal to me. Olive, camel, and toffee are not in the palette. I do like these colors (esp olive green) and will keep wearing them. I tend to prefer cooler versions, but not always like camel. Black and other darks are not in the palette, although some darker greys, blues, greens are. I “get” that black might look harsh on me, but I really like it, get complements, and have a huge amount of it. Not giving it up! I do tend more and more to add lighter colors near my face when wearing black.

Practical Matters

When I look at what colors are available at retail, they will always be a subset of what's in the palette, depending on season and color trends etc. When I find clothes that fit me, are flattering, in fabrics and colors I like, they are often (usually?) not going to be in my color palette although something might be close :-).

Glad I Did it; Where to go from here

It was fascinating and fun, and I’m not taking it too seriously. I'm not intending to try to follow this palette exactly. This process has helped me solidify what colors I really LIKE to wear, even though some of it goes against this color analysis. Sometimes when you try something new it ends up confirming that you prefer your “old favorite".

I’ve become a bit obsessed with the cool vs warm thing, and am going to try to give that a rest and think more about color in general.

Having a small number of colors in my wardrobe continues to feel right to me, it makes outfit generation and shopping easier

I’m not changing my preferences but I will perhaps have a more discerning eye for color, and I do have some new colors I might like to try.

Maybe I'll give myself a "wear only colors in the new palette" challenge for February, but I'd definitely need an exception for black.

All comments and suggestions welcome as always!
