Oh, Ingunn, I can't wait to see how you look in the red.

I have a knee length red coat and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. But, I adore red, period. Mine is a cranberry red (a bit of a blue cast) which works with my skin tone well. For me it is a true neutral; I happily wear it through our grey winters feeling so fab.

I also realized I have been wearing red coats for many years; I always seem to have a red raincoat or winter coat or both. I just love the look.

I also have a red coat and I love it. I've always loved red as a pop of color color, though, which made buying a red coat a little easier. It does take a bit of daring to have it be your primary color. Buying a colorful coat can be a leap of faith. But I have to say this, you, wearing a deep teal, light aqua or light blue scarf and a red coat would look knock me down gorgeous and sophisticated.

I can't wear camel, caramel or tan, so I envy you the flexibility of even being able to consider it. It is a gorgeous, basic color. If you do go that route, why not add a great red scarf so that you are satisfying all your constituents?

This coat style is a stunning classic - and more traditional in the camel option for sure. You amp up the "modern" in the classic with a vivid colour. My modern classic tomato red coat - thanks for the compliment, btw - looked SO much better in a colour than in a neutral.

Zapotee, thanks! I will check out f there is the necessary FAB-ness in red tomorrow:)

Inge, that really helps more than you know. I do believe that I can love the red coat, too:)

Una, thanks! I think you are one of the creative ones and know what you're talking about.

Scarlet, that is so true. I do want this coat, though, because I like the fit so much, and the color options are good enough.

Caro, this is a timely question. I love the cut and fit for sure, and I picked camel because I wanted a classic, timeless piece. I thought it was a good color on me, but after trying it with several of my clothes, It dawned on me that it probably could have been better. I like the red one a lot, though, and will try again tomorrow. If that is no good after all, I have to stick with the camel colored coat, because the return policy in the shop is no money in return after the first day. This is not the US:( I will be happy enough about that, too!

Oh! I totally misunderstood! I thought you meant what color scarf goes with THIS coat. Hmm, then I would decide between red and camel. You would probably look great in navy or winter white too (or green or purple). I would make this kind of a purchase slowly. Coats are expensive and you will have it for a long time. I love red coats, but a long coat in red as opposed to hip length is a lot of red. You have to be sure you will feel great.

I'm just coming right out and voting for red, assuming you will love it. Red is still classic, but not as difficult to wear as camel can be and gives a more creative vibe. I would wear camel if I could, actually - it seems like Burberry, almost so classic it's back around to edgy!

I think that's a very smart approach, Ingunn. Like some other ladies I'm not the biggest fan of this shade of camel on you, and I hear you on not wanting the black version.
I know red can seem very adventurous and bright if you are not used to wearing that colour in large quantities. But if it's a shade that is flattering on you, then it could be a real winner (more so because the length, fit and silhouette of this coat are great on you).

If it helps at all: last year I got a knee-length bright green coat (before that I had only owned darker coats: black, navy, deep burgundy, darkish purple was as bright as it got). Well, I feel absolutely fantastic every time I wear my green coat. It puts me in a good mood just looking at it, I have received many compliments on it, it feels unexpected and chic, and it helps brighten up all those dreary and rainy Belgian Winter days. I have a hunch you might very quickly fall in love with "your" red coat, Ingunn;-)

I cannot think of a better plan. The most important factor is that you must feel FAB in it. The fit is INCREDIBLE, which is 99.9% of the battle with coats, I find. Thank the fashion gods you are down to two choices.

Thank you for every considerate response! I feel rather stupid not being able to make up my mind about this, but it's a lot of money, and I want to feel good in it. The only color options are red, black and camel. I want to keep this coat because the fit is very nice, and the quality is good, too. What I need to decide is wether it should be red or camel.

Thoughts:
1) It's been helpful to rule out the black option. It was never really what I wanted. I'm intrigued by the red coat, but as Angie points out - I have to love it. A red coat has actually been in my thoughts for a while, but in general I'm kind of careful with red. My daughter has a red peacoat that I borrow every now and then, and it looks pretty good on me, I think. I think I love red enough to wear it on a daily basis.

2) My style personae has always had an element of creative in it, which I like, and although I really admire camel colored coats and find that they look very good on a lot of people, I fear that I come across as quite a bit more conservative than I really am, style-wise, wearing one. This is probably something that has dawned on me during my capsule frenzy lately. There is also the question of wether the camel color suits me or not, in which the YLF-forum was divided.

3) My family is divided, too. Daughters vote for camel, whereas husband votes for red. What is a poor woman to do? I know this is only about what I want, really, but I'm such a coward.

Tomorrow I will bring the camel coat back to the shop and try on both. Then I have to decide what to do. Does this sound like the right approach?

I love a red coat - my short raincoat is a tomato red, and I've worn it now for at least 5 years. I feel cheery whenever I put it on. If you don't feel the same about this red coat, then don't get it. The camel is an absolute classic, but again you have to love it.

This is tough. Black is Nay, but after that... I am hard pressed to vote for Red. The Camel would work well and better than Red, in my mind, with the outfits you've posted recently. On the other hand, Red would give you that touch of eclecticism.

But I have to be happy. I should have worn booties today - my outfit would have been better - but I really didn't want to. That I suppose is the *special* Rachy Lou mark. I require flaws.

If you're starting to doubt the camel coat Ingunn, I suspect it's not a keeper. That having been said, I adore camel WITH - what about picking up an inexpensive fab red scarf and red gloves to wear with the camel? This might give the coat the "ooomph" it seems to be missing for you. Just an idea.

I vote for red. I do have a red peacoat I love. It takes a while to get used to such a statement, but most reds are a breeze to mix and match. Red is a neutral in my book. I'll be frank, I'm not a big fan of the camel coat with your coloring, so I'm excited at the prospect of seeing you in another color.

That is a very important consideration, Angie. Thanks for reminding me. I'm having doubts about camel because it's a step towards a very much more conservative version of modern classic, or at least that's how I feel about it. Although I admire classic style, I'm not convinced that this is for me. I also begin to feel that I look more drab than fab in camel after all :(

The red one made me feel more spunky. I had a look at your tomato red coat, Angie (it's so beautiful, by the way), and the option I consider is a darker red, but still bright.

Camel goes with pretty much everything. It is a rather luxurious looking color -- especially in a coat. I think the juxtaposition of your scarf which doesn't look as substantial as the coat is the "mismatch" the colors work fine.

But to answer the question you actually posed I would choose a blue based red -- black is so ho-hum unless there is some winter white to shake it up a bit.
