Interesting idea to sort by color within sections of type. I really like your idea of separating out different silhouettes. I sort of do that with sweaters, I've got 1 shelf each of pull-overs, T-necks, and cardigans. But of course within each, the shapes can vary widely. Some of the cardigans are shaped very similarly to traditional crew-neck pullovers.

I will definitely reorganize once I have enough room to put all my clothes in the closet. Right now my shelves are separated by type--a stack of sleeveless tops next to a stack of SS Ts next to a stack of LS Ts. The next shelf has a stack of shorts & skirts next to a stack of knit dresses. My hanging space is so limited that all the (slim!) hangers do double duty with 1-2 pairs of pants underneath a shirt and maybe a blazer too. Last night I remembered a pair of jeans I forgotten all about. Ransacking the closet, I couldn't find them. Maybe they're in the cellar.

Roberta, I like the idea of turning things inside-out to air before wearing again. Your closet looks great.

There's nothing like a good closet re-org ... I don't believe even the Pinterest closets really look like the Pinterest closets ... I'm sure there's a lot of staging that goes on. But there's definitely something calming about starting the day with a well-ordered space in view.

I installed new closet hardware during the shutdown. I was tempted to put in wallpaper, but I know my limits! I have the entire rainbow in my closet, so organizing by color helps me see where I have plenty of one color and not very much of another. Shopping reins, as it were. I also tend to group the patterned things together, because that helps me see that I have 6 striped T shirts and don't need another. I have an upper rack for pants, a lower rack for tops, and on the opposing side, a rack for dresses and long tunics, and one for blazers ( very neglected this year!). I have only 3 skirts that huddle in the back corner as if they were ashamed of themselves.

My bedroom closet is not large enough to be year-round, so the winter things are in the guest bedroom closet.

Also, you can see that I hang once-worn things inside out to air. Do other people do that?

Interesting. I maybe be the rare one that doesn’t sort by color. It is probably because my wardrobe is colorful and don’t have many items in the same color. I keep all my clothes in closet and don’t have seasonal switch. I sort by type and then by season with the type. For example my heaviest blazers like tweed and velvet are on the left, season less wool in the middle and cotton and linen on the right. Similarly for other categories.

I am usually organized by type, length, and color. Heaviest and lightest items switch places. This year my lightest weight non black or navy tops and dresses are center stage. I haven’t been wearing my neutral tops, and my sleeveless dresses are getting constant use due to the heat and that no one is seeing my arms this year. A HEWI has been trying to find similar with sleeves but no luck. Not even trying this year.
I moved the lightest dresses to a hook I used to hang purses from so they are easy to find.
Interesting how I adjust my closet as what I wear in any particular season changes from year to year. 2 summers ago was the summer of the skirt.

I organize my closet by item and by color within the item.
Sometimes, when I am feeling more adventurous I hang a small capsule wardrobe in 2 or 3 colors to wear during the week.
As nemosmom has mentioned I usually just put away the high summer or high winter clothes. Items like wool sweaters in summer I just stock in a higher shelf.

oooh, I love a good nerdy post! I organize by color, but within category. So, all long-sleeve shirts together, in color order. I don't mix sleeve lengths or bottoms with tops if they are the same color - I should give it a try! I have learned to leave transitional pieces out all year, instead of packing them away every season. Now, I store only high summer and winter items in the off season.

I organize by color: black (probably 1/3 or so of my wardrobe), brown, tan, then roygbp, then prints in that order. Then within the color I sort by dresses, jackets/cardis, pants/skirts, sleeved tops, sleeveless tops.

Laura, I always did that too. This is new for me, and helping me evaluate cokif palette better, and my sugar eye for prints, when overall tend to reach for solid colors. And so far the sky hasn’t fallen down by my lumping shirts, dressy T’s and knit wear together by color.
It may be that this is not permanent, but just a tool to help me SYC and evaluate and edit.

Interesting. I’ve always sorted by color within categories, but I don’t separate out prints - I’ve always just put them with the solids of whatever the background color is.

I know what you mean about some grays. The ‘melange’ mixed fibers can automatically give items an athletic or loungy look even if the rest of the garment doesn’t suggest that.

I organize by color, as well, although I keep pants and skirts on one side of the closet and tops/dresses on the other. It's aesthetically pleasing, but also suited to the way I choose clothes each day.

I used to keep all my clothing out year-round, as well, but since moving here, I've adopted a very low-key seasonal transition. In hot weather, I keep wool sweaters in a couple of cedar-lined zipper bags on the closet shelf. Come winter, I swap those with my lightweight linen. It's more a moth-deterrent than anything else, but I also appreciate the extra open space on the rack.

About 1 year into YLF, I organized my closet by colour. I’ve never looked back. I do keep everything out (with the exception of the front hall closet outerwear that gets rotated seasonally from a basement storage closet.) I’ve been confining myself to a colour palette (currently 6 ‘colours’) though there are a few outliers. When I shop, I ‘filter’ for my palette.

For the closet organization nerds:

Initially, with pandemic distress and disorientation coming right on top of retirement, and then the coming summer heat, I did a closet organization around loungewear and super casual wear and moved lots of items to another closet.

Then got some energy to work on somber capsule, to edit some items, and to slowly climb out of hibernation.

Then, also I feel fall coming, with the change in the light, and wanted to be prepared for transitional season temperatures or color cravings. If I keep lots of items out of my main closet, I tend to forget them, or miss the "weather day" or chance to create something by SYC. This actually seems more true now because I have fewer external rules to follow (i.e., no work) and because I am free to change clothes during day if I am too hot/cold or something is less comfortable than I thought.

I usually had organized by type of garment (pants, tops, toppers) and somewhat by silhouette within category, as in, shorter boxy tops, longer tops, tush-covering tops, and fabric weights. I tried to keep up color sorting within those categories. However, with colors, patterns, different weights, it was quite a visual jungle.

But this past week or so I decided to do (almost) complete color organizing within main clothing types, regardless of fabric weight or style.

So, I now have all solid colors sorted kind of by gradation of hue, then stripes, then all other prints.

Because of how my closet rods are arranged, with some different sections, I used one of the smaller sections for all tops, toppers and pants that are currently appropriate ( and seasonal ) for the somber capsule, as these are all in some type of black, navy, gray or blue colors (though I have a couple of print tops/blouses that I know I could use, depending on weather and situation), and all have been tried on for being for being in good condition and wearable for that. For example, at first I had sorted all of my gray knit tops (not plain T shirts though) into this capsule because "gray is somber and goes with all the darker neutrals". Then I realized some of the variations on "gray melange"- type appearance just looked too casual . For instance, I have (had for years) a JJill knit top in both a navy and a gray. The navy gives an appropriate look, but the gray skews too casual. So the navy stays in the somber capsule, while gray goes into an adjacent rod of other tops.

This change has added a degree of "serenity" to closet. I am not minimalist nor do I have all solid neutrals,so not going to get that Pinterest/photo look of such uniformity, but it does give me several sections of solids and sections of pattern, and then also I can see more easily how much of what I have in these categories.

The way I was able to sort items much more by color and not by sub- category (wovens, knit, short or longer-sleeved, short or long) is because I was finding that I could not actually pinpoint a permanent silhouette role or even temperature role for many of my items--meaning, it was becoming much more individual and even unexpected, as to how my tops and toppers worked with bottoms and each other, and when I might wear them.

This is for S/S-early fall and transitional weather. I still do not have an "all in" closet, because I store my most of my wool sweaters for 5-6 moths of the year, and I hang them all in closet when in use. So I make a switch (even if not all at once) when temps are a good deal cooler.

May be too much free time!
