Staysfit, have you and your son checked out the programs at the University of Connecticut, Colorado State, and Drexel University? Best of luck to him--it's an exciting time!

I'm finally catching up on my Sunday paper and just read "6 lessons for helping job seekers with autism" by Michael Bernick and Richard Holden, authors of The Autism Job Club: The Neurodiverse Workforce in the New Normal of Employment (2015) and of course thought of your son five year out. Since you said your son is interested in CS, I noted that it mentioned that the software giant SAP has created an autism-at-work hiring program and that ULTRA testing in New York and the Specialist Guild in the SF Bay Area employ adults with autism. If you're interested in reading the San Francisco Chronicle article and have problems with sfgate.com, PM me with your email address and I can send it to you as I'm a subscriber.

Staysfit, do you know about collegeconfidential.com? One of its forums is "Learning Differences and Challenges". Parents share a lot of info & experience (eg. link to Dept. of Ed's TRIO list), lack of responsiveness to inquiries, quality of support, etc.

I'm all about students finding their best match on all fronts, and it sounds like your son found it at Landmark -- assuming he's not the type of kid who repeatedly falls in love with the most recent place visited! CC also has a thread on weird reasons why a student has rejected a school: Didn't think the squirrels were as cute as another place; hated the architecture; too friendly; you name it. My DD rejected any school with LARPing and where students were described as *quirky*.

Best wishes on your family's journey.

How wonderful he's found somewhere that can meet his needs and where he feels he will be happy and settled, that must be such a relief for you. I can imagine it must be a very daunting time for both you and him x

I'm currently visiting some colleges with my DS. He's a special guy with high functioning autism and a writing disorder (he physically can't write, but he can type). He's interested in computer science/ game design, and he also loves math, history, creative writing, and to play the trumpet (jazz). He's a smart guy, but requires some supports so we are looking for colleges with good disability services.

We looked at Landmark College, and I think he fell in love with the program and the campus. If anyone else has a child with a learning disability, or autism that is capable of attending college, they should look into this place! My son said the college would be empowering, and that is exactly the type of thing a mother likes to hear from a son like him. We may have found a good match. :-)

If anyone knows of other programs that would be suitable for someone like my DS, I would love to know about them.
