I have worn my flat slouchy Frye's with many pencil skirts -- I love them with dark tights, but I find they also work well with socks. I have seen some ladies really pull off the Dansko w/skirts look, but I have huge feet and looking top down, I can't stand the view :). The style I like is similar to this with a heel that's they typical Dansko heel, not this block heel. They look ok with pencil and flouncy skirts. http://www.zappos.com/dansko-d.....in-leather

I used to wear skirts or dresses every day to work. In winter it gets cold here, in the 10s or 20s in the mornings. I drove to work, but I had a long, warm wool coat, and I wore stockings with regular shoes. I picked up my son from after school care, and so it was cold and dark, and sometimes we went grocery shopping, but it was doable. I definitely wish I had had tall boots. I don't know of a brand that makes for wide feet, though. This website showcases comfortable shoes. Maybe they'll mention wide shoes or boots:

I second the suggestion of Doc Martens, if a casual look is good for your workplace. The taller ones, especially, are really cute with tights and skirts.
For a little more refined look, but good comfort levels, I'd take a look at Born boots, too.

Boots of all heights/styles and oxfords are what I do. I have this thing about going tightsless as long as possible (bc I hate them) so my boot shafts tend to get higher and higher as it gets colder. An otk boot with a midi is doable pretty late in the season for me.

What about Rieker maryjane type shoes? Or their low boots? There are so many options on Zappos don't even want to post.

And also, see Viva's thread about loafers ... I think those could be a fresher option.

I pretty much only wore birkenstock sandals and garden clogs for a good 5 years or more. When I moved back into regular shoes I started with Keen, Earth and Danskos. The theme here for me was tons of toe room.

This is similar to the Dansko style I started with: http://www.zappos.com/dansko-t.....full-grain

I think these were my Keens: http://www.rogansshoes.com/kee.....medium=cpc

These were the first Earth shoes I bought. http://www.zappos.com/earth-so.....ck-vintage I was so excited when I found my newest loafers from Earth because I know the brand fits me well. http://www.zappos.com/earth-br.....led-patent I have to include the link, but I'm not sure they'd be a good transition shoe coming off the birks.

I would think Docs (if they are your style), oxfords or booties would be perfect. You may have to try a few pair to find a good fit, but many stores that carry Birks and other 'comfort' brands usually have some cute versions in their lines. I'm thinking Naots, Josef Seidel, Ecco......

This summer I started wearing skirts to work and like it so much, I want to continue into the fall. We have cool weather so above 45 most of the time with very little snow or slush, so I think it should be doable with some tights.

The only (and big) challenge is shoes. I am a committed comfortable, wide, flat shoe wearer - think Birkenstocks, sandals etc. I am ok with stumpy. What sort of shoes should I look for? Links to specific brands/shoes that have worked for you would be great.
