I have a pair of silk long underwear that I use for extra warmth under tights or pants in the winter. Although the silk is really light-weight, it provides enough warmth so that I'm comfortable in 10F (-12C) weather. If it's colder, I'll wear my tall boots and my long coat.

I find that I don't get too hot even when I'm wearing the silk underwear indoors and I tend to run warm. I'd be uncomfortable indoors in a double set of tights.

My solution to the "cold walk to warm office" has been the down skirt. It goes over my regular clothing and acts like a blanket around my legs. I can also wear it at outdoor events like the Iditarod over pants or to sit in a chilly arena. It is the best invention ever.

http://www.skhoop.us/

BTW the two middle models on the home page are both really good friends of mine, incredible athletes and northern climate fashionistas!

I live in AB and it gets pretty cold here. When I was working, layer is so important and tall leather boots. I don't have to walk far from the car to the building but even that little short walk is enough to send chills through my bones. I got into the habit of heading straight to the restroom and removing a layer before settling down at my desk. It was also an opportunity to tidy up my hair as I hate fly aways after removing my scarves/hats.

You may also want to try getting tights or leggings for figure skaters and runners from the sports store. I found them to be very warm and breathable.

Unless a person runs very cold, I've often wondered how big an issue tights are for most people in northern climates. The vast majority of people aren't actually OUT in the weather. Normally people go from home to car and from car to work or other stops. We (those of us who live in the great white north) are not actually hiking around in the weather most of the time, so tights are more than aequate. Wearing a longer coat and boots (either outfit boots or actual snowboots that one changes when one reaches their destination) helps.

Of course, if one is actually going for a walk outdoors, then warmer options must be considered. In those cases, leggings and boots are a great option (along with the long coat), as are the fleece lined tights or even knit tights. I run warmer than average, though, so I am not as affected by the cold temperatures as most. I live in WI and am quite comfortable for most of the winter in dresses, tights and boots and wool coats.

Thanks! I will have to be on the lookout for these. I can't do wool next to my skin as I have sensitive skin, but the fleece lined tights look great!

I always wear wool socks over my tights, and under tall boots. I cannot stand having cold toes. If my toes are toasty, I can handle cold knees. I do layer tights but I don't go too crazy because once you are inside, it can get too hot. But it all depends, as everyone says, on whether you run hot or cold. If you run cold, you could layer silk thermal leggings under dark, opaque wool tights. That would be way too hot for me indoors.

I actually find that it's warmer to wear a sweater dress with camisole, tights, tall boots, wool socks, scarf, 3/4 length coat (puffer or wool with thinsulate) than to wear wide legged pants lined wool pants with socks and booties. The reason? Air has a way of drafting up the leg of your pants and hitting your bare leg. Not to mention if there's snow on the ground it's uncomfortable if the hem of your slacks gets wet.

That said, if it's really cold, nothing beats skinny denim tucked into tall boots.

Thanks to Angie and YLF I discovered fleece lined tights last year. I get cold very quickly, but these kept me warm and cosy at about -10°C. I wore them with knee-length pencil skirts and knee-high boots. Extra tip: Wear (thermal) socks over the tights, nobody will notice and they provide extra insulation.

I live in a pretty cold climate, and I wear a ton of skirts and dresses. As Suz mentioned, the trick is to wear wool/plush-lined tights and/or layer tights. I often layer tights with leggings and/or knee high socks as well. I've sometimes worn 3 layers of tights!

It does work well enough for me though! I would say our winters tend to average -10 to -30 degrees Celsius.

For the top layers, I just wear whatever I want and layer on a ski jacket +/- a scarf. xD

A lot depends on how warm or cool your body runs.

I live in Eastern Ontario. Our winter temps average in the 20s on the fahrenheit scale (somewhere around -7 to - 10 celcius), so perhaps a bit warmer than you are talking about -- though nights are, of course, colder. And with the wind chill off the lake, it can get extremely bitter. Often they will say "feels like 40 below" with windchill.

I regularly go out in tights and a skirt in the winter months. Even in deep winter. In fact, I probably wear skirts and dresses even more in fall/winter than I do in summer (and I love a dress in summer!) But here is how I would do it:

Tall boots, tights, skirt knee length or longer, coat at least knee length. LAYERS are key. So...under the dress or wool sweater, I might have a camisole, or over it a wool jacket (in addition to the coat). Coat will be wool, or a puffer coat. I will be wearing a hat, gloves, a scarf. Ideally, the boots will have insoles to provide a bit more protection from the cold pavement.

Angie actually layers her tights (more than one pair) but I have yet to try that method. There are also wool tights and fleece lined ones that some people wear. Again, I haven't done this.

I would wear an outfit like this if I were walking relatively short distances - expecting to be outdoors for 20 to 40 minutes at a time. (This is another key - movement keeps us warmer!) If I were spending much longer outdoors or if I were intending to stand still the whole time I was out, I am not sure i could manage this.

For casual situations when I will be outside much longer, I would, of course, wear some sort of sport-appropriate clothing.

Thistle, I'm in WI too, and I wear lots of skirts/dresses in the winter. For me, the key is warm tights, tall leather boots (preferable fur-lined), and a longer down coat that almost reaches my knees. But I do run very warm. Or maybe it's because I grew up above the Arctic circle (where women still wore lots of skirts), so the WI winters don't seem that bad to me.

In short, no. Tights are not that warm, unless you run hot, so tights might be okay. Where I live, we can have stretches of -20 degrees celsius (I just googled it in Fahrenheit, so that's -4F) or colder, and the reality is that I wear pants and long coats for the small amount of time that I'm outside. If I do wear a skirt and tights, it's with long boots and a long coat and I'm going from a warm house to a warm car.

If the norm is 10F where you are, you would probably have to do tights, long skirt, tall boots and long coat. The only other thing that might provide another layer of warmth is maybe a pair of leggings under your skirt?

I am just not able to do that - the draft up the skirt is way too chilly for me! But I give kudos to those who can do it.

Hope that helps!
