Much more beautiful than my coworkers flooded basement. We normally do not get such extreme cold in VA but it was 4F the other morning. It was quite the news extravaganza and they actually closed schools. I know other parts of the country were much worse (and some this would be a normal winter for). I was worried for those who did not have shelter (homeless and animals) and my own plumbing. We are fortunate and have lots of (fashionable) warm clothing.

There were actually some "frost quakes" or "ice quakes" near here. It sounds and - if you are close enough - feels like and earthquake, but apparently it is caused by moisture in the ground freezing and expanding, causing a loud shuddering or popping noise. It happens more often in rural areas, which is likely the reason we had them. That has never happened here before as far as I know. Freaky.

It has been cold here-- nothing terrible (we occasionally deal with the negative numbers like the Canadians) -- I think the thing is that here in CO, it usually warms up during the day, but this polar junk means we've been overcast. Usually if we are overcast we have moisture and it is warmer, but today is no sun cold and no moisture cold combined. Brrrr!

They are calling it the polar vortex. The group home for autistic kids I work in lost its heat. Half our staff is out sick and we are all refugees in the main center. Covering for coworkers and staying because our kids can't go to school is causing me to work 16-18 hours a day. I keep telling one of my kids that we need to be grateful that we had somewhere warm to go. We'd all like to get back into our regular routine. At this rate I will have worked 100 + hours this week. I usually work 50-60. Cleveland is having a lot of water main breaks but no problems with any of my personal stuff.

As bad as it is, Beth Ann has made some good points. We have gotten used to warmer temps, that are not so good for our environment.

And honestly, most of us are very lucky. We have heated houses and heated cars. My thoughts and prayers really go out to the less fortunate who may be dealing with this.

Once we get used to it, we will all be fine. And Cuddl Duds will be a rich, rich company!

That photo looks straight out of the film 'The Day After Tomorrow', I love that film. Guess it's not so appealing IRL eh? Interesting about the positive aspects Beth Ann outlined (not the wolves though!).

In complete contrast, it is forecast to be 43 (109 F) in my city this Sat!!

Actually that is fine - since we have aircon - nothing like the impact this cold will be having for those in North America.
Is there some special help for homeless people in that sort of weather?

Temps are moderating now, Deborah, but there may be flooding from rapid snow melt. On the plus side, I read a report that said the cold weather is a boon for the regional environment. The increased ice cover prevents erosion of the shore and will prevent the evaporation that has dropped the water levels in the Great Lakes to record lows in recent years. The cold is killing off at least 50% of the Emerald Ash Borers that are decimating our lovely ash trees and will likely result in less lyme disease from ticks next summer. They were also excited about wolves moving down into Illinois........not sure how I feel about that, since I heard one last night! Gotta keep an eye on my dog!

So grateful to have a warm bed to sleep in, and praying for those that don't!

I know that some of you are facing extreme cold in the US. It's being covered on our news and in some areas apprears to be quite a concern in relation to the community's safety and welll being.

Someone posted this to my Facebook feed. I thought it was so beautiful but also a little menacing.
